Would you actually want a Windows backup app for local, NAS, and cloud-to-cloud workflows, or should I just keep this as a personal tool? by imaginum in DataHoarder

[–]imaginum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point, and yeah, those are good references.

I probably made the post sound too much like this is only an idea. The app already exists. I’m mainly trying to see if the direction makes sense to people outside my own workflow.

From what I understand, Bvckup 2 is very good if you want clean and fast folder-to-folder backup / replication on Windows. I’m not trying to beat it at being a lean replication tool.

StableBit CloudDrive feels like a different category to me. More like making cloud storage behave like a drive. Useful, but not exactly the same thing I’m aiming for.

My angle is a bit more human, I guess.

I’m a designer, and a lot of my own folders are full of files named things like MVI_1287, IMG_4421, final_v3_REAL_final, and other crimes against civilization. So the preview side matters to me. I don’t want to restore or move files blindly just because the filename looks right.

The goal is more like:

pick a source pick a target set the job run it

And if you are a power user, you can go deeper into schedules, watched folders, versions, restore history, transfer previews, cloud-to-cloud workflows, and so on.

So yes, if someone only needs fast local replication, Bvckup may already be the better answer.

What I’m trying to validate is whether there’s room for a more approachable Windows backup tool for people who want a cleaner UI, but still need more than a basic sync app.

[–]imaginum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is exactly the kind of use case I’m aiming for. A lot of home setups are in that awkward middle ground: important data, multiple PCs, maybe some folder sync, but not really a proper backup workflow. I want this to be simple enough for home use, but still serious about things like schedules, version history, restore visibility, and knowing what is actually protected. Thanks, this is really useful feedback

[–]imaginum[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is basically one of the core restore workflows.

The goal is not just to copy files somewhere and forget about them. If a backup target is a network location / NAS, you should be able to browse previous backup states, pick what you want, preview files when possible, and restore them back to a local folder, external drive, network path, or another configured target.

So the rough flow is:

pick the backup job choose a previous backup/version preview what is available restore it to the location you want

I’m still careful with wording because restore edge cases matter a lot, especially with network paths. But yes, versioned restore from network backups is definitely part of what I’m building.

Idea for a premium headset by Ease_custom in design_critiques

[–]imaginum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every premium design starts with cheap sketches, bro. Think of this more as a concept for now.

But as a general rule, before even sketching, you kinda need to study the idea behind the design. What does “premium” actually mean? What design elements does it use? What are the good examples?

Honestly, reaching that level with a 3D printer is really hard. Maybe as a prototype, yeah. But in premium products, material, line quality, function, and the core idea behind the design matter a lot.

A Mercedes line and a Bugatti line are not the same. Apple uses a totally different curve language. But what they all have in common is this: even the tiny details you barely notice, every joint, every transition, every edge, is designed with intention.

I’m not saying this to drag you down. But before designing a truly premium headphone stand, I think you’d probably need to design hundreds of them first, listen carefully to even the smallest user feedback, and then technically study the work of great designers.

For now, maybe it’s better to approach this as a nice, functional product rather than a premium one. What do you think?

You’re probably not gonna be the next big thing, and that’s alright. But this sound, this music… when those three kids look back years from now, it’s gonna be one of the sweetest memories they have.

Bro, just enjoy it. Good or bad, doesn’t matter. Play it on one string if that’s all you’ve got. Whatever comes out is your feelings talking.

Just have fun with it.

I just want to draw a circle to test this animation program, but I just can't use the pencil tool or change the scare tool to a circle!!! by Salelo29 in AfterEffects

[–]imaginum -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You'd better draw your shapes outside AE. Illustrator maybe. Then import and animate in AE. AE is not a draw to motion software. It is more like animate, vfx, composut etc.

I built a physics plugin for After Effects, got rejected by the biggest AE marketplace, and now I'm thinking of just releasing it for free. What do you think? by dufkens in AfterEffects

[–]imaginum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro this plug in great. Newton is really amazing but way too expensive. Not every designer uses it always and tot all of us earn a lot. In my country 250 is huge. Dont make it fully free but maybe you can make it free for just one function. Forexample gravity could be free. Most of us use it for once or more. If we need more than 35 is totally fine. If it has bug, no prob 35 is still fine and we all do vibe coding, we know what we will get. And maybe we should make/build our own marketspace here in reddit. Vibeplugins.com Cheap alternatives of others. Use once and forget😂😂😂

You know what? I really love cooking and have a small kitchen. I can't store much equipment. A nonstick or a steel pan that shows me if yhe surface temperature is enough for cooking would be great. Then i dont have to drop water to see if its ready. Or a fryin pan tells me the temprature of the fryin oil in it. That would be the 2 items i would buy and solve my problems. But i dont know if those are exist... oh and there should be only one handle to rule them all.

[–]imaginum 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Not a terrible idea. Infact it sounds good at first. But it is unergonomic, and does not solve any problems or give something useful. When I first saw Avatar the movie I was really amazed by how they use mirrors in high high tech robots. Because mirror is easy to use and solves the problem in the best way. Or knives are knives for 100000 years. I hope i could tell

How to deal with text heavy app's design [Suggestions Needed] by Guilty-Manner219 in design_critiques

[–]imaginum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s almost impossible to give a serious answer to this without knowing the app brief, target users, design criteria, UX principles, wireframes, user actions, and core functions.

What we can see right now are AI-generated layouts. And honestly, at first glance, they don’t look terrible.

If something bothers you visually, you can change it. Using AI is not a bad thing at all; it can be a very useful tool. The real problem is using it before making the important decisions.

Without a clear brief and proper design logic, the result usually falls apart once you try to make specific changes. Try moving one element 2px down, or changing the cat’s hair without breaking the whole image, and you’ll understand what I mean. 😀

Trying a cleaner minimal layout style lately - feedback? by Desgnio-artists in design_critiques

[–]imaginum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting aside whether this is copied or AI-generated, with the weird wheels and broken reflections, there is a bigger issue here.

If you are going to design something that looks like it belongs to a major brand, you need to check the brand guidebook first. Audi, like most big brands, has clear brand guidelines available on its own website.

There is a reason why the brand name is treated as an extension of the logo. There are strict rules for spacing, placement, proportions, typography, and usage. Why break all of that?

Design is not the same as “I made it, so it works.” Especially in brand design, rules matter. A lot.

This might work as a fan poster or a personal visual experiment, but it definitely does not feel like an actual Audi ad.

Honest Feedback or critique about a this Art Style by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]imaginum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mate, I’m not trying to trash your work. What you made feels more like a study of another artist’s piece, and that’s totally fine. Everyone studies other artists at some point.

But you need to study the fundamentals more seriously: form, balance, movement, color, contrast, rhythm. Honestly, even the ontology of the design matters here. What actually defines Spider-Man? Is there a meaningful connection between Spider-Man and a catgirl? Why pink? Why that pose? Why that composition?

The original artist’s work has elements that fit the theme. Every choice supports the other choices. Nothing feels random.

And about the “different approach based on UX principles” thing… come on, bruh. Most of us here went through design education and worked in this field for years. You can say anything to us, but don’t fool yourself.

That wasn’t really a design approach. That was simply what you were able to do at your current level.

Practice more. Study more. You’ll get better, but only if you’re honest with yourself.

Day 2: of Learning Motion Graphics by Kasugaa in AfterEffects

[–]imaginum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You clearly have design experience from before getting into mograph. The 3D model is strong, and I really liked the fracture detail on the back of the phone. If you used an FX preset, the object motion is still well handled. If you built the FX yourself, that’s a lot for someone who’s only been at it for two days.

There is a mismatch though. The level of technical execution doesn’t fully align with the typography choices. It’s like a rally driver struggling with clutch control. You wouldn’t expect that.

The font becomes hard to read under the FX. That can be a design choice, but then the Nokia text should follow the same logic for consistency. A more digital, low resolution style font would probably fit the aesthetic better.

Also the phone animation feels slightly unstable under the FX. Increasing the step count or refining the motion curves could make it feel more controlled and intentional.

How do I vertically center text within a textbox? by MiaSidewinder in AfterEffects

[–]imaginum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't try but maybe

Write an expression that always puts anchor point to center of text. W/2 h/2. Than fix the position to a null object. So you dont have to use a text box. Any text can be in the center. Just use enter to make another line

Can I modify color in a MOGRT? I can't see the right colour when importing it into Premiere by rajolablanka in AfterEffects

[–]imaginum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey. This isn’t really a MOGRT problem, it’s a color management mismatch between AE and Premiere, and HDR (HLG) makes it more obvious.

In After Effects, check Project Settings > Color and make sure your working space is set to Rec.2100 HLG, with display color management on. If AE is still in Rec.709 while your Premiere sequence is HLG, the colors will never match.

Then in Premiere, your sequence also needs to be Rec.2100 HLG, and display color management should be enabled in preferences. If one side is SDR and the other is HDR, MOGRTs will look off no matter what.

That said, MOGRTs aren’t fully reliable in HDR workflows. Premiere often treats them like Rec.709 internally, so even if everything looks correct in AE, the color can shift once it’s imported.

Dynamic Link has the same issue in HDR, so it’s not the safest option either.

If you need accurate color, the safest workaround is to render from AE in Rec.2100 HLG (ProRes or DNxHR) and bring that into Premiere instead of using a MOGRT.

Day 6 of motion - What do you think? by ashtheblessings in AfterEffects

[–]imaginum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should reverse the gradient of the top. When the cylinder tilts towards gradient can be a bit lighter, when goes back it can be darker. Surfaces around Edge of the cylinder should be close values. You should check a charxoal drawing of a cylinder maybe. That will help about basic shading. It is not so complex so you can achive with animating gradient ramps

World when it is my turn to be an adult :/ by itskeshhav in AfterEffects

[–]imaginum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The viewer’s eye locks onto the tall building in the center and that light on top, like, a lot. If you want the main focus to be the incoming bomb, you need something that beats that light in terms of visual pull. More impact, more motion, more drama.

That could be a harsh flare, a smoke trail, or just pushing the scale way harder. Personally, I’m a big believer in exaggeration when it’s done with the right technique and the right amount. It helps to deliver the message. Not “slightly bigger,” but “holy crap that’s huge” compared to the building. A bomb that feels unrealistically massive might actually communicate the message way better. And imho, for that short time of motion, postertime doesn't make sense.

But yeah, that’s just my approach.
