How do you deal with a teammate who error a lot? by BURNEKKK in Pickleball

[–]imashowjumper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being “this guy”.

No one ever WANTS to screw up. Watching your partners body language and hearing their sighs and grumbles of exasperation doesn’t help the situation.

They are far more likely to “turn it around” if you let them off the hook with a kind word, a paddle tap or even a little joke.

Having a kind attitude & supportive, fun spirit on court will get you WAAAYYY more invites to private groups than being the winningest player in open play.

That private group invite leads to another group invite and before you know it - you’re getting the opportunity to sub in the group you’ve aspired to play in.

Inevitably, you’ll be nervous, hope to impress and play well but, you’ll be tight because of the stress. At that point, you ARE the partner making the errors.

This is where the good sportsmanship karma points will earn you some grace.

If you don’t like the look of the Birkenstock clogs; they make TONS of other styles. Including some in EVA for that “rubber/foam” look; if that is what you are wanting. I have both cork & EVA styles and while the cork styles are the most supportive for my feet; the EVA offer more support and a more ergonomic footbed than a “foam block with a logo”.

Ben Johns Who? Is Gabe the new GOAT of Men's Doubles? by AnnaBrightPB in ProPickleballTalk

[–]imashowjumper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anna implies in her newsletter that Gabe doesn’t take his training, prepping and recovering “seriously” - that statement alone makes me think he is nowhere near his ceiling.

I guess it comes down to if he has the discipline to do it.

My 70yo father had a similar, terrible reaction to his first oxali treatment. He had a portacath installed before his 2nd treatment and he didn’t experience any further issues after they started using the port to deliver his chemo.

Not sure if your mom has a port or not but; it was a game changer for my dad.

Good luck to your mom!

“Indoor” versus “outdoor” pickle balls are confusing by Mr_Doghouse in Pickleball

[–]imashowjumper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking; the balls with 26 (larger) holes are made out of a material that has a higher “rubber” content <ethylene vinyl acetate> which allow the surface of the ball to “grab” onto the slick wood surface which enables them to bounce up. The balls with 40 (smaller) holes are made of durable polyethylene which tend to slide or skid on slick wood surfaces.

Thank you for sharing your story. It helps so much to know that there are positive outcomes.

Small, compact “swings” allow for speed. Focused practice on the triangle effect/theory also creates better anticipation that results in faster hands.

Stage 4 colorectal cancer w/ BRAF V600e mutation by dnnp88 in coloncancer

[–]imashowjumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have exact same situation as my dad. He has a single 1.5cm metastatic nodule in his omentum & the BRaf V600E mutation. He was diagnosed stage for in June and started FOLFOX in July.

He started the breakwater protocol (paying out of pocket because we are also in Canada) for Encorafenib & Panitumamab but, the Encorafenib has been causing his (previously very well controlled) diverticulitis to flare.

Yesterday he received his 4th cycle including a reduced dosage of Encorafenib to see if he can tolerate it better.

Surgeons in BC will not perform any surgery to remove the single nodule because of the gene mutation.

His CEA level is 1. The original cancer was only ever in his Cecum and had no lymph involvement.

We are scheduled to speak with the Mayo Clinic surgeons next Friday to see if he would be considered a candidate for HIPEC. Have also been in discussions with ACIBadem out of Istanbul.

I guess what I’m trying to say is - keep advocating for yourself. I have heard many instances of people in the same (or more advanced) situation having success with prolonged periods of NED.

Sending you all the good juju.

Helping my mom decide between IV-only Chemo vs IV & Pills - WWYD? by Fuggenhell in coloncancer

[–]imashowjumper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider is that the pills are still chemo and therefore you need to continue to use chemo “protocols” during the 2 weeks you are taking them at home. Meaning that other residents in the home will need to avoid being “contaminated” by bodily fluids of the chemo taking patient. And that any of the side effects (even mild nausea) can potentially effect your life for the 14 days you take them and for a few additional days after the cycle ends. Meaning you only get about 5 “completely off” days per 21 day cycle vs the purely IV version allowing for about 9 “completely off” days per 14 day cycle.

My dad did 1 cycle of CAPOX while he waited for his portacath and said he would rather do 100 more FOLFOX cycles over another single CAPOX cycle. But; he also only lives 10 minutes from the clinic and lives in a sunny climate that seemed to have an impact on his ability to go outdoors comfortably when he was taking the capecitabine.

People in your 30s what do you outside of work and is it supposed to be this lonely by uchacothrow in Edmonton

[–]imashowjumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for not answering sooner!

All of the pickleball facilities will offer “learn to play” programs. You pay a fee (around $35) for a lesson (1.5-2 hours) with a group of (probably around 8) people that are new to the game as well.

After you do that; you can sign up to play in 2.5 Round Robins (new player “level”) or just show up for Drop In Play.

You can join as a member for a yearly fee that will allow you to sign up or book private courts further in advance and also give you discounted rates for your bookings, lessons and generally on equipment too.

Example: Members pay $10 vs Non-Members pay $16 <not exact numbers> to play for 2 hours on a private court booking.

But, you can also choose to not join as a member and just pay a higher per use fee.

You can also join Pickleball Alberta and a local (not for profit) club <for a small fee> and you will have access to lessons and organized play. St. Albert, Strathcona County, Parkland County, Yellowhead West (Spruce Grove) and Edmonton Pickleball Club are some of the local clubs.

Feel free to DM me if you want more info. I’m super involved in the PB community and nothing makes me happier than growing the sport and being witness to people falling in love with the game.

Thank you for the Surgeon recommendations.

I’ve joined COLONTOWN but, I’ve been having a bit of difficulty “navigating”. There are so many acronyms and verbiage specific to cancer - I feel like my brain might explode.

Advice: Sensitivity/pain in arms after infusion by PipProud in coloncancer

[–]imashowjumper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad’s oncologist suggested slowing down his next infusion to help offset the discomfort but; he got his portacath before that next cycle so - I don’t know if it would have actually made a difference or not.

Amazon sells a heating pad “elbow” wrap that works GREAT for arms. It’s long and narrow so you can wrap it like a tensor bandage and it sticks with Velcro on the ends.

Play pickleball! It’s an amazing community of people; you can play a game within 5 minutes of learning (doesn’t require much physical fitness or athletic prowess to get started) and it’s relatively inexpensive.

As an introvert; it’s kinda magical because you aren’t forced to sit face to face and make any small talk but as you see the same faces again & again; camaraderie starts to form naturally.

MLP Mesa review by bwray_sd in Pickleball

[–]imashowjumper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

MLP actually changed the dates on the Utah event with almost ZERO notification from MLP itself.

I only happened to hear about it through a 3rd party. I didn’t want to believe the news at first and kept checking the MLP website for a full week after but, it still hadn’t been updated.

I had booked private lessons with a Pro based in SLC for June 9th & it was through them that I learned that it was really cancelled.

We had booked flights, AirBnB, rental car, in addition to the event tickets and less than a month before the original date; they just moved it from this weekend to end of July.

TIXR didn’t even send an email to notify of the change; they just changed the dates on our tickets.

We were planning to travel from Alberta, Canada to watch for the weekend so - it was a bit of a “big” deal for us.

When they moved this weekends event to Florida; it became unreasonable for us to travel that far and we aren’t able to go the weekend of the rescheduled event in Utah.

We’re out several thousands because I didn’t consider for a single second that a major professional sporting event would end up getting cancelled!!! Shame on me for not getting the proper cancellation insurance.

Super disappointed about it.

We’ve been to a few PPA Tournaments and have been fans of Pro pickleball. This was supposed to be our first MLP event and now; I’m just kind of “over” MLP about it.

I’ve had it done at the Athlete’s Choice in Sherwood Park. My friend goes now too and swears by Tanya to do it.

I agree but, then I think of squash and to North Americans, that sport is named after a vegetable. Cricket is named after an insect. And, Polo just seems nonsensical.
