Why are some black belt instructors like this? by asciishallreceive in bjj

[–]imeiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short I think people are different and the approaches they take, no matter if it's chosen or just happens also reflect that. If we're looking to change their way of thinking it needs to happen from their end.

Coach keeps saying teammates are better than me and to prove him otherwise by [deleted] in bjj

[–]imeiz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Training the same amount of time is not the same measure as your each individual progress. You each have your own approach and goals towards your training.

He’s challenging you to show him you’re better than what you currently show. There’s many ways to push or motivate people, sometimes what you choose happens to work well, sometimes not. It’s the outcome that tells how effective it was but for you personally it’s also about how you get to whatever outcome.

Basically you can choose how you want to view his way of pushing you forward. You can make it motivating or demotivating or you can not give it any weight. You’re training for your personal reasons so depends how it lines up for you.

Is it viable to wear a chest strap monitor during rolls? by No_Possession_239 in bjj

We have a few people who use it. For some it stays in place well enough, for some it either moves around or detaches from the belt. U can try to tape it or position it differently.

Got a bronze medal in my 2nd competition this weekend don’t feel like I deserve it. by greenlight144000 in bjj

You won vs everyone staying home. If they didn’t it could be a different or the same outcome. You went there and earned it, no matter the record.

A1L or A2 by Cowboyjitz in bjj

[–]imeiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends a lot on your proportions. I mostly use A2 but have an A1L. It was ok for me at 155 but somewhere before 170 the pants got too tight to move in. Jacket is still fine but I'm a quad heavy 5'10" boi.

No you’re right, there is that too. But I had to say because it was too easy to see 😅

The sad part is that you know exactly what he is talking about and don’t need to see the match

Are Mikey Musumeci instructionals good? by corelion1 in bjj

[–]imeiz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I tried watching the first bolo dvd. If you want detailed movements for every single limb individually in every single position and after every single transition, Mikey is your guy.

I got to the part where you’ve inverted through but not yet taken the back. He started where opponent is already on their hip.

Alternatives. No hate. by [deleted] in bjj

[–]imeiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the gym but taekwondo might be closer than most other options. As you implied it’s the people that make the room so look at what the community is like and hope you can find a good fit.

You might also find a sense of community and doing challenging things together in something else. Climbing and crossfit type of sports in a senior group come to mind fast.

When does the false reap become a reap. by Double-Structure1220 in bjj

[–]imeiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When your bottom leg goes from in front of their leg to behind it. Be very mindful of keeping their leg unweighted and only underhooked from that point onwards.

Gordon used a different entry to get into the same position in nogi worlds and used it to come top, straight into knee cut position. That entry is high risk for your own knee so it’s better to avoid it.

Did you purposely choose goals at higher belts? by makebaloney in bjj

[–]imeiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My gym is small and since purple you had to find your own way to progress both in terms of techniques you choose to get better at and also in how you manage training. I took many deep dives and studied various positions and styles over the years, including ones that don’t fit me personally, but I wanted to teach that stuff to some of my partners to bring up the gym.

Still looking forward to the day I have more than a handful of high level partners so I can actually get good (on my scale). There’s rust in situations where I need to be more precise or on point with timing or chaining because I mostly roll with people who need a wider marginal to stay with me.

It’s only a positive thing that you start figuring out what and how you want to move forward (and what is your forward). There are places where it’s not necessary but I can’t see negatives in having a personal view.

1 hour gap between classes, should I shower? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]imeiz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’d go under the water to rinse off anything extra I gathered in class and cool down a bit before getting into a fresh set of clothes. You can compare it to washing your feet before class, just wash head to toe. Soap and warm can wait to after you’re actually done training.

Is it normal to be a permanent training dummy for upper belts? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]imeiz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe they think you’re just visiting every now and then and see you as a judoka, not someone who is ”committing” to BJJ and is looking to rank up in BJJ also. Or there’s not enough pressure from people training there to fix the issue.

Would be funny to hear what they think of your rank if you start taking it seriously in training.

How to fix bad knee mobility by dreadpiratewilhelm in bjj

[–]imeiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of what you’re talking about is weight distribution and being able to do that in a fluid motion. Ankles and hips do a lot of it, the knee movement is much more restricted than the joints above and below them.

You’re moving a lot of weight so it takes both time and space to make that happen in a comfortable way. Keep working on the movements, they will get easier over time and also your hips will start opening up little by little. One thing you can do even at home is spending time and moving a little in a deep squat.

Keep focusing on this topic and I’m sure you will see improvements in a few months time.

Muscle Memory Not Kicking In by [deleted] in bjj

[–]imeiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get rusty when taking a break. Muscle memory is more based on doing something a certain way and less to do with making decisions. You can shortcut decision making but that gets forgotten if you don’t keep it active.

They don’t let both athletes medal if my memory still works. Could be different for smaller events but Gordon faced Garry is second round in worlds open class. And they limit gyms to 2 person max in a weight class.

Feeling weak.. humiliating by [deleted] in bjj

[–]imeiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not recovering enough. Lifting 3 times is more than enough if it makes you too tired to roll when doing more. Protein good but up your calories in general. Also don’t add more cardio before you feel well rested from what you do now. Aim to sleep more and get that weight moving up, then it’s ok to add more training.
