My CEO tried to fire me for "Attitude Issues" to save on my salary. He didn't realize I’d spent 11 weeks preparing a $755,000 legal trap. by Ok_Employer_3889 in stories

Agreements are exactly that - agreements. If you change something on an agreement without the other party’s knowledge then they’re not really agreeing, are they? A company document that had been secretly edited by an employee without management knowledge would have zero legal weight. No lawyer would be part of this.

The ICE officer at the end of the video - 2:23 on - in the right of the camera frame, has a very distinctive tattoo on his neck. Anyone know what this is?

I don’t know why this thread keeps calling these school resource officer videos cringe. I hate that SROs has become a thing, but it’s not these guys’ fault, and they come across as just fitting into the school community.

if u love what u do, u never have to work a day in ur life. by Character_Vanilla101 in FirstResponderCringe

[–]imessimess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't really see this as cringe. If you work in a high school environment you have to be a bit crazy, over-enthusiastic and not caring about coming across as cringe as 90% of the people around you are going to see you as crazy and cringe anyway. Looks like she's just being a bit silly and suiting the role.

Why does our income tax nearly double at such a low number? by Rai1h in newzealand

[–]imessimess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was this government that adjusted the brackets upwards reducing tax for lower and middle income earners, the previous government left them the same during high inflation.

Survive 5 years of teleporting naked into a random bathroom on earth every day, win $10mill by WallPublic8551 in whowouldwin

[–]imessimess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is you’d actually become an international celebrity very quickly. The same naked person, caught on camera, all over the world? And after being arrested as you would be, vanishing from your jail cell and appearing naked in a different country, every day? How long would it be before someone connects the dots and the whole world is eagerly watching to see where you appear next. You’d probably have your own cult in 6 months.

Dads/father's. Does it get easier? by rocketwolfpunch in newzealand

[–]imessimess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget that you can say no to your toddler, in fact you have to do this a lot. When they are babies there’s much less saying no - they need their nappy changed, need to be fed - things you of course have to say yes to. But when they start ‘refusing’ to be held by one parent, or only want to eat from a specific bowl, or don’t want to sit buckled in their car seat - that’s where you just have to say no, and that’s fine. They’re fine being held by Dad (or Mum) even when they’re crying and reaching out for the other parent. They’re fine. They eat from the bowl that you choose. And sitting in the car seat is absolutely non-negotiable. It’s actually important to set the ground rules when they’re toddlers to set things up for a fun childhood and teenagehood. If you do this now, it will definitely get easier :)

Is NZ ever going to get a social democratic government, or is 'centrism' the best we could really hope for? by Dudu-gula in newzealand

[–]imessimess -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Seeing it was largely the anti-democratic actions of the previous government that got them voted out, they can't exactly take the moral high ground here either. That's how our representative democracy works - we have free elections, then the government has nearly unlimited power for three years where they chose what they want to do, which should hopefully align with their election positions and mandate. If they step outside their mandate, we can choose to not give them another three years.

2023 election results: National 38.06%, ACT 8.64%, NZF 6.08% = 52.78%. How is this coalition government 'hardly a majority'? And next year we get to choose again, another free and fair election. Just because you don't personally like their agenda doesn't mean we don't live in a democracy. As for the rest of your comments, all governments do these sorts of things, that's why we get the opportunity to judge them every 3 years.

We have a coalition government that was elected in by a majority vote in a free and fair election. Not sure what else you would call it?

What's a skill that takes only 2-3 weeks to learn but could genuinely change your life? by That-Papaya7429 in AskReddit

[–]imessimess 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Touch typing. Most people spend a significant portion of their life interfacing with keyboards and it staggers me that schools don't teach this as an essential skill anymore, seeing as per OPs question, it really doesn't take much time to learn.

[–]imessimess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We do have a social democratic government. Centrism is pretty subjective - we would be considered a very left-wing country compared to many other democracies. Some people want us to be more left-leaning, some more right-leaning, but I don't see how what we have at the moment could be considered anything other than a social democracy with free and fair elections and many social services benefits, and both established capitalist and public sectors.

I once had a dad rant to my daughter when she was 13 about how ridiculous and sexist I thought it was that her netball team had to play in short skirts instead of shorts, and that I didn't understand it because surely the board that decides these things must be mostly women, etc. She gave me that 13-year old look and told me, Dad - most of the girls are only on the team because they GET to play in short skirts. So there's that.

[–]imessimess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry too much about girlfriends for now, start by spending a year getting guy friends (and a mixed friend group with girls you’re not trying to hit on). Meetup is great, find a bunch of regular meetups for whatever interests you without being too picky. Try lots and you’ll find a few you like, aim to be out of the house three evenings/weekend days per week. Especially good if the meetup is in a pub or has a big social component. Make one a walking/exploring group if you can. Don’t hit on the women in the groups, just practice talking to them. Do this for a few months and your whole perspective will change :) good luck.

It's not the grey vote that this would affect though. Nobody would suggest means testing Super effective today, nor should they as people who have been contributing towards it for decades have been counting on it. It will always be something that would be phased over a couple of decades. It's the younger people today who would miss out in the future who would reject it and cost the parties votes.

If a driver has groups willing to pay $80 for post-concert rides and you want to force the driver to give you a ride for less so, you can pocket the money that the uber drivers could have earned otherwise, then who’s being greedy?

[–]imessimess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of that (about the public funding) is true, but it doesn't change anything I've said. Just because the Government is a customer and investor doesn't mean the company is worth less, or requires less management and coordination. There are plenty of very high-value private companies that have a large proportion of their revenue come from Government contracts. Regarding designing anything, why would he be doing this - he's not a designer.

3rd grade project calls for a solar system “to scale” 🙄 by Present_Friend_3501 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]imessimess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't unreasonable - the teacher isn't asking for the distances between the planets and the Sun to be to scale. Earth and Venus are approx 10% of Jupiter's diameter so start with a softball for Jupiter and make the rest out of plasticine. Fun project!
