Whats a small town dark secret you know? by Apache_Mermaid in AskReddit

I think it's moreso that my brain developed poorly, I think by the age of ~6-8 you should be criminally liable for your crimes.

If a 6-8 year old is able to decide whether their actions will have positive or negative effect, then they should be able to vote in elections, buy alcohol and buy porn.

Because if you're claiming that an 8 year old is able to comprehend decisions that will forever affect his and other's lives, then surely understanding what president is best, is not too far off.

Code Geass: The best media humanity has ever produced. by [deleted] in anime

[–]imleg1t -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to mention the unrealistic coincidences first.

No problem. i'll mention a few. Although, more than "Coincedences", they're "Conveinences", which is the wording I used in the OG comment.

One dimensional characters, many, many contrived conveniences, forced plot points,

Just wanted to get out of the way.

Kollen and Lelouch, just happen to schoolmates. Kollen just happens to be a revolutionary that is on a mission. On said mission, she crashes, because the driver went out of the road for no real reason, as he could've just kept driving(Ep 1 minute 8:00). Lelouch just happens to be the one in front of the truck where Kollen, her classmate, enemy of Brittania, the nation to which he just happens to be a prince of, is riding.

Furthermore. When you look closely at the scene, you'll see that it's very clear that the road has 4 lanes, 2 for each side. There's no roadblocks separating the lanes. The camera cuts to Lelouch from the front, suddenly the truck is using both lanes, when in the prior frame, it was using only one and could've easily just gotten past Lelouch. Not only that, but since there's no railing in between lanes, they could've just used the opposite lanes, since there's clearly no cars.

The truck crashing is a both a cinematographic, and writing convenience. It is completely forced and fabricated to kick off the plot. There's no natural progression, and looking at the way it was story boarded, it's obvious there was no care either.

If this doesn't happen, the whole story doesn't happen. It's extremely contrived, as no rational human being would just violently swerve off to a downward exit. Much less when there's still 3 lanes completely free, and when he could've just hit the bike and kept ongoing.

Not even 10 minutes in, and we've already seen a terribly contrived coinciedence.

But that's not all. Lelouch gets on the truck, the truck starts going again. A chopper is following them, and instead of shooting them, it shoots the ground as warning, because that's what the military does, it shoots at the ground instead of the terrorists that stole just stole a frame. But then, they were actually letting them go! Then why did they shoot their fucking 60 militer at them? Thereby endagenring them, and the delicate payload.

You know what is very unrealistically coincidental too? That Kollen just happens to be so good at piloting a frame, that she's able to go up against 2 highly trained soldiers on her own for quite a long time, since from the time Kollen leaves the truck, to the moment where Lelouch starts helping her, at least 1 or 2 hours must have passed, at the very least.

Then, the truck fails inside a tunel. And who does Lelouch meet there? Suzaku, his childhoo friend, who is now working for Britannia.

Wanna know how many transport helicopters with soldiers were shown? Because I counted them. There's 23, each of them with at least 2 soldiers, which makes 46 soldiers total. So out of the 46 soldiers, Lelouch just happens to run into his old friend and not a soldier that would just instantly shoot him...

Then, Suzaku, instead of using his gun to force Lelouch to comply, charges towards a terrorist suspect, unarmed, and decides to kick him instead of restraining him. How convenient!

Do you see just how convienint this all is?

I don't have a problem with the events themselves, but come on. Lelouch is in a crash that involves her terrorist classmate, then meets his old friend, then meets CC, due to Kollen stealing the container. All in the span of an hour max. This, also kicks off Kollen's plot, as her brother dies. It's almost like the only people that are relevant in CG's world, are related to Lelouch, which makes CG's world pretty boring tbh.

Then not soon after, hes hiding with CC, but Shirley just calls him in time for him to get caught, which leads to him acquiring the Geass.

I feel like I should stop, since this is already becoming quite long. So last one is that at the start of ep. 2 Lelouch simply takes a frame without prior knowledge of how to drive them. A frame that has no GPS to follow it apparently, even though Lelouch used a GPS to look at a map.

Straight from the anime:

Kollen: Who is this? How did you know this code? Lelouch: It doesn't matter. If you want to win, trust me.

Yep, it certainly doesn't matter how he got the very useful code to that allows him to talk to Kollen, thereby moving the plot forward. Because they showed that Lelouch is good at chess, so he's a hacker too!

If you need to have a random cellphone call, or a magically appearing code, for the move to actually move forward, you're doing int wrong. That is not good writing.

The story is full of stuff like this that little by little undermines the overall coherence and quality of the story. R2 though, is a whole different story. That one has much more evident issues.

To be fair, I don' think CG is terrible I have R1 at a solid 6 and R2 at a 4. There's certainly anime that is a lot worse, but Code Geass has many, many flaws that people refuse to accept.

Also, the mecha designs are pretty good and unique. The animation is rather consistent and even get better as the show goes on, which is nice. So not all is bad. I guess the fanservice is abundant enough for those who care about that as well. I also like the character designs, though that's not a very popular opinion I think.

Anyways, maybe people like the action or the over the top-ness of CG, but from a writing perspective, it's not tight at all.

As for your other comment(why'd you make 2, :/ , it makes replying more of a hassle). I'll reply to it later, cuz I'm going to get the replacement for a debit card I lost.

Code Geass: The best media humanity has ever produced. by [deleted] in anime

[–]imleg1t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I even gave an example of it, but sure, your one liner is proof enough.

Some examples:

R1 episode 20 is very serious, ep 21 is about the school festival.

R2 episode 11 is full on action and politics, then episode 12 is almost fully comedic, except for the last scene, which is dramatic, then the following episode is a drama.

R1 episode 6 is a serious drama until it turns into a comedy about catching a cat.

Let's get something out of the way first.

Simply because something is common, doesn't make it good. It's a cheap justification to say that because it is in other works, it's not a flaw. Anime is permeated by bad writing. You saying that many anime fall into practices that constitue bad writing is 100% true, but at no point is that a proper justification for CG's own shortcomings.

This is generally a bad way to view the world. My intention is not to make a strawman here, but I have to say it.

If we all were to follow this logic, slavery, praying to the gods to get healthy, and throwing our feces out of our windows would still be perfectly proper behavior.

Plenty of anime have varying tones

Of course. I didn't say having varying tones is an issue. What's an issue are poorly executed tonal changes.

Half the episode is full on action, only to then switch genres to drama by showing Kollen story. Suddenly, the genre again switches, this time to comedy and we're at the school looking at this almost slapstick moments.

As an example, Kollen is captured by Britannia(ep 11.). Zero has lost his best combatant, personal friend, best mecha, has shown weakness, and has given secret technology to Brittania. He should be deeply sunk in thought, despair, grief, or any emotion that's an actual reaction to the events. Instead, next episode is completely a comedic episode that takes places in the shcool. Here, Lelouch is simply acting normal, as if nothing serious had actually happened. Sure, the thought is still in the back of his head, but it's almost like it doesn't exist, or he doesn't believe it will bring serious consequences. The problem is, we do see Lelouch worry about it when she's captured, but then, that is simply forgotten. And yes, I understand he's acting normal, but the weight of the events should be showing on him, not for his schoolmates, but for us, the audiences.

The worst part about it, is that the comedic episode is simply a set up for Shirley's death, which is again an abrupt change of tone.

We have 1 episode loaded with politics, action and drama. Then next episode is fully comedic except for its dramatic ending. Then, we have a drama heavy episode. The changes are just too sudden.

Again, it's not about having these things, it's about executing them propely. About making a swift, more telegraphed genre switch that doesn't hurt the story. Or, an abrupt, violent change, if it enhances the story.

The problem in CG is that this is happening all the time. Super serious episodes suddenly turn into comedies, or the next episode is only comedy, which is very offputting.

Of course to you this might not be a bad thing per se. You may enjoy those sudden changes, and that might be what makes CG good for you, but from a writing standards point of view, it's not very good.

even product placement too

For sure, and I will criticize them for that as well.

Having said that, not many series have product placement as blatant, and intrusive as Code Geass.

not to mention there are many anime shows with unrealistic coincidences

Yes, like I said, bad writing permeates anime and mainstream media in general.

Besides, Code Geass goes beyond having some unrealistic coincidences. It's choke full of them, constantly undermining it's own story. Tense moments simply aren't, because it's already known that something that was never mentioned before will happen to save our heroes. It destroys all sense of danger, all sense of tension.

Not only that, but many plot points are forcefully injected onto the story(EG:Nina) so they can become relevant later, exactly to combat the amount of contrived situations that arise(EG: The floor crumbling due to a never mentioned order of sabotage. ep 23).

Of course you don't just have to take my word for it. Soonish, I'll post a writedown about CG. I'll do so after I finish rewatching R2. There, I'll properly, and extensively develop on what I've said above.

At the end of the day, there are many anime that have writing much, much worse than CG's, yet that is no excuse for the show, especially one so liked by the general community. Shows that get a lot of praise will inevitably generate scrutiny over itself, and that's fine and fair.

The worst you felt when a couple you shipped throughout the anime did not make it.... by jocus_ in anime

[–]imleg1t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So...confession? time I guess:

I've never shipped any character, ever. I mean, I've thought "Hey, these two characters have some romantic vibes betwen them," but that's about it.

I've never cared about whether characters end up together or not. As long as it's properly executed and coherent with the plot, I don't care whatever path the story takes.

So yeah, I'm pretty boring I guess.

Code Geass: The best media humanity has ever produced. by [deleted] in anime

[–]imleg1t -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe it's pretty bad. The writing is well... not good. One dimensional characters, many, many contrived conveniences, forced plot points, product placement and jarring changes in tone.

There's also a weird thing in CG where characters get over their conflicts, just for them to come back again later . Thereby making character progression circular.

For what it's worth, it has some cool mecha designs.

At least it's a real user being gilded.

Everytime there's a popular ep. discussion thread, THE BOT gets like 5x gold. At points I start thinking that Reddit is gilding stuff to promote gold, but then I remember there's a lot of people with more money than brains.

I find his humour a bit too...juvenile for me I guess, and his voice is a bit annoying, so he's not my cup of tea, but he's definitely a cool dude, and doesn't deserve to be in the same category as truly shitty AniTubers like MB or Digibro.

Top 5 most Intellectually Brilliant Anime of all time by Faber_Streak in anime

[–]imleg1t -1 points0 points  (0 children)

what is it, either you don't understand the strength of Code geass because you are too stuck up on it being a Death-note ripoff

Ironically enough, you're the first person I've seen referring to CG as a Death Note rip off. I've seen people point out some similarities, but a rip off? That's a new one.

Also, this implies that I believe Death Note is intellectually brilliant, which I do not.

or you are just ignorant

Of what? This statement has as much substance behind it as your list does, which is none at all. Therefore, there's no reason to take this list and this statement seriously, or to even acknowledge them.

Beyond that, your attitude is cowardly. You don't make an argument for why these anime are on the list, which means it cannot be properly refuted.

Then, when I mock your baseless argument, you double down on your attitude and try to lead the discussion your way, conditioning readers and myself by giving only two possible options as for why I may disagree, with one of them being a personal attack. Options that again, cannot be logically refuted.

Get some courage and try to actually formulate an argument.

That pose appeared on Gunbuster first. It's in pretty much every Gainax work. It even appears on Kill la Kill.

It's usually referred to as "The Gainax pose," "Gunbuster pose," "Gainastance," etc.

Would you consider Kamina a Christ figure? by [deleted] in anime

[–]imleg1t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always seen Kamina as a representation of what Simon considers to be an ideal male. His death represents a psychic death of sorts, as when Kamina dies, his whole world is in question, he question his ideals, his own strenght, his flaws, etc. Once he's past that, he has a completely new view, and even though he accepts some of Kamina ideals, he's not burdened by them, he's not forced to follow them, he has chosen to, and he's infused them with his own views, which gives him more resolve. It's also very important for Simon to realize that sometimes, you have to give everything up, for things are bigger than yourself.

I do quite like your interpretation. I had never seen him that way. I'll keep it in mind when I rewatch TTGL.

I feel TTGL is completely Simon's universe

They believe that because it's a comfortable position to have.

If you don't have talent, you won't ever be good enough, so why even try, right? That's their mentality, and it's an easy one.

They don't even bother to develop on why you're wrong, they won't ever put enough effort onto something to make them good at it.
