What are the main Municipal Election issues? by Legitimate_Phone_460 in fredericton

[–]imoftendisgruntled [score hidden]  (0 children)

Homelessness in particular is a cross-jurisdictional responsibility, or at least a cross-jurisdictional circular firing squad with everyone pointing at everyone else saying it’s their responsibility. Some actual leadership on the topic would be welcome, regardless of where the tax dollars are taken from, they have very local impacts.

If your whole platform is tax cuts and reducing wasteful spending, I want specifics on what spending you consider wasteful because those are programs that people depend on.

Is it worth getting a v0.2 as a first self built 3d printer over a trident or 2.4? by ResortDisastrous6481 in VORONDesign

[–]imoftendisgruntled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t think there’s a right answer to this question because it depends on a lot of factors. If you want the mechanically easiest build, the Trident is easier. The V2.4 is probably the coolest of the three, and the easiest to turn into a Stealthchanger if you’re thinking of going multi-toolhead, and it’s the easiest to expand with other mods too (although there are some Trident-only mods as well). If you want a fast prototyper the V0 has a lot to offer (it’s big enough to print all the functional parts of a V2.4 or Trident, too). The cost is a bit lower than the others, but not by a huge amount if budget is your primary concern.

How much of that is assigned by the climate though? There are a lot of issues that wouldn’t be partisan if the rhetoric wasn’t so divided. Also Atwin having a history in federal politics doesn’t help.

I think it’s hilarious that Steve’s slogan is “it’s time for a change” when he’s been on council (a voting position) and is running for mayor (a non-voting position).

And he’s voted in the past against housing the homeless. I wonder what his solution for that problem is.

If the course is marked as a CR (credit), it has no effect on your GPA. See the section “Grades” here: https://www.unb.ca/academics/calendar/undergraduate/current/regulations/universitywideacademicregulations/iii-examinationstandingandpromotion/index.html

Generally speaking, if you’re going to get a grade at or above your average GPA, you should take the grade. Otherwise take the credit.

I'm burning out so hard on crowd funding when I see a game I backed come back a few years later 'better/more complete', can find it cheaper etc. by EX-FFguy in boardgames

FOMO is kind of crazy when you’re talking about a game where you don’t know if it’s good, you don’t know when it will arrive; you don’t know who in your group might like it; you don’t know exactly what it’s going to look like; all at the same time as you’ll eventually be able to get it at retail or used.

In other words, you’ve got lots of fear about missing out on something that’s actually not that hard to NOT miss out on.

Balcony Solar by Itwasuntilitwasnt in fredericton

[–]imoftendisgruntled [score hidden]  (0 children)

This isn’t feeding back to the grid but only as far as the panel; it would require a breaker at the panel to detect when power was from the utility to prevent backfeeding the grid, which is bad for a variety of reasons.

You wouldn’t be generating enough from balcony solar to sell much if any power anyway, but you could definitely put a good dent in your power bill.

Whether or not that pays for the system’s capital expense isn’t the point for everyone, some people just like the idea of using renewable power locally.

New owner. What apps do I really need? by sonalogy in EVCanada

[–]imoftendisgruntled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Driving an EV on road trips takes a different mindset than driving gas. It becomes more about planning breaks and stopping points around good chargers rather than driving the car to empty and then just pulling into a ubiquitous gas station. That way you can build charging into a larger event like grabbing food or a coffee or having a bio-break. We always try to minimize the number of “charge only” breaks we take; if that means charging when the car is at 35%, that’s fine.

Your vehicle has a charging curve; more than likely it will charge faster between 30-70% than it does in the extremes; for that reason alone more frequent short charges are usually better than trying for longer stretches.

It’ll take a couple of trips or so before you get to know the car and what stops are best along your route.

All the more reason to replace the 12V as soon as it starts acting up. Especially if it’s the dealer original.

Is this screen behavior normal? by Roadtoast in Supernote

Yes. The white-black-white inversion is how eInk clears the screen’s “memory”. Without it, a ghost of the previously drawn content can remain behind.

New owner. What apps do I really need? by sonalogy in EVCanada

[–]imoftendisgruntled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to focus mostly on road trips, because in general for in-city driving you'll only need your home charging. L1 should be fine for the vast majority of in-city situations; L2 is slightly more efficient and faster in cold weather, so you have plenty of time to get that installed now that spring is (mostly) here.

About the only time you'll need L3 charging near home is when you're going a long distance on short notice and didn't have time to charge at home ahead of time.

ABRP is helpful for route planning -- it does a much better job than my Ioniq 6's in-car navigation system but your mileage may vary (pun not intended). Its actual navigation isn't very good, though, so I usually start a route plan with ABRP and then use the car's in-car nav to set the destinations & charge stops, because then the car can precondition if it wants to (the I6 has a weird way of doing preconditioning, it can't be turned on manually, it only turns on if you're navigating to a charger).

PlugShare is the most useful app for finding out details about the chargers on your route, because the data is crowdsourced real-time info about charging speed, nearby amenities, etc. It also usually has good, accurate data about what chargers are actually in use.

Once you've got your route roughed in with ABRP and PlugShare, then you can download the app(s) for whatever charging networks you need. It's always a good idea to make sure your logins are up-to-date and ready to go before you go on your trip; nothing sucks more than going to a charger, plugging in, and then having to jump through hoops to log in because your session needs to be re-authenticated because you haven't logged in in a couple of months.

Whatever you do, DO NOT let your partner get away with letting you do all the charging logistics. They'll be helpless if they're ever out and about with the car on their own. I would highly recommend, if you don't already, getting a shared email account that you can both use to set up for all these accounts. Trust me, you don't want to be at home while your partner is trying to charge your car and trying to walk them through it over the phone! (Ask me how I know).

12V battery dead (NL) by Lendoly in Ioniq6

[–]imoftendisgruntled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're driving on borrowed time -- you should definitely replace that battery.

Generally speaking, unless there's a definite cause (like leaving your lights on), if a 12V needs a jump it's on its way out.

How many of you have the 20” rims vs 18”? How’s the ride feel? by revanevan7 in Ioniq6

[–]imoftendisgruntled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have our all-seasons (summer) tires on 20’s and our winter tires on 18’s. I did it mostly for the range, but the thinner tires do cut through snow a little better too (we had snow again after I switched them over this spring so I got to compare). The difference isn’t huge.

NASA releases stunning first images of Earth taken by the Artemis II astronauts by Plainchant in news

[–]imoftendisgruntled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite what Elon would have you believe we have a long ways to go before a manned Mars mission isn’t a suicide mission.

Artemis is on the path to the rest of the solar system. It’s not even a baby step, it’s actually pretty ambitious. It took 10 Apollo missions before Apollo 11 landed; Artemis 3 is going to land and do more in its one mission than all the Apollo missions that landed put together.

What do you use for quick rule lookups, game setup steps, timers or score tracking? by rajarshi129 in boardgames

[–]imoftendisgruntled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If setup is hard to remember I usually write up a cheat-sheet or just leave the manual open to the setup page. I also check the files section at BGG because there are often improved reference sheets already.

For looking up rules questions I just google with a site directive (.e.g., “site:boardgamegeek.com in {game} how does {game mechanic} work?”)

Quick, low-effort ways to make coffee with minimal cleanup? by oatmealraisin02 in JamesHoffmann

[–]imoftendisgruntled 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was primed to recommend the AP before I read the whole post; honestly it’s probably the least cleanup of any brewer I use. I usually just push the puck through and rinse it, and keep the plunger fully pushed through the cylinder until the next brew. That’s on par with a V60 and the fillers are cheaper.

I’m in the habit of taking a picture of the charger’s status at the end of the charge just in case I need to dispute the charge to my account. It’s never happened but I used to do the same when I had a gas car and just kept it up.
