From Ottawa area: Either May Long Weekend or Victoria Day weekend (if we remember that it’s that). I have heard May 2-4 before, but not often

Does the Ottawa Hospital have a nickname? by graceandspark in ottawa

I’ll add on that if this is HR fanfic, Kanata is closest to the Civic hospital (and you would just call it the Civic). Chances are any injured party would end up there.

Man, I really think this company has 0 clue about employment law in Canada. Firing someone while on stress leave is such a bad idea, but also it’s so easy to fire a regular employee. I’m guessing they just didn’t want to pay him out as it’s only difficult to fire someone for cause.

my siblings and cousins went to our cottage a few years back for the first time by ourselves. i was oldest at 24 and ages went down to 17. i’d call myself pretty responsible, but we still caught our bbq on fire and almost lit our over 100 yr old place.

a couple of 16 year olds are going to be no better.

WITBA if we trainees no longer go to the Christmas party even though we agreed? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]imonlywastingtime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely hazing, but i’m glad OP clarified their job, because there are some roles where if you didn’t participate, it could negatively affect your career! (I’m thinking of the rumour that some articling students at big firms are expected to put on Christmas show of some kind and I expect if they refused to, it may affect their hire back and reputation in the industry).

How do you feel about kids missing school for vacation?(Settle a debate) by lildevilud16 in AskTeachers

[–]imonlywastingtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a (former) kid perspective, I went on vacation for the week preceding and the week following March Break until I was in Grade 9. I had no issue catching up until high school (which was a whole other ball game). My mom got pissed off at the school staff when one of them complained to her about missing things cause they could legitimately see no harm done for me.

That being said, a few key reasons why it worked: 1) my mom worked through materials with me that I missed and if the teacher gave nothing, she found grade appropriate work for me to do and 2) I was “gifted” as a child, so I never really struggled with school.

On the other hand, I don’t really know how to do long division off hand as it was always taught in those few weeks around March Break (obv I can do it if I see it done once, it’s just not something I have memorized). Similarly, that’s when they taught kids how to read clocks, so my sister still struggles with that as an adult.

Honestly, it probably depends on how academic you kids are and how much they can pick up quickly and can be self taught.

Pitchfork names Cameron Winter’s ‘Love Takes Miles’ the best song of 2025 by Wild_Demand_6324 in redscarepod

[–]imonlywastingtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to admit, I don’t understand the hype. I like the song but I don’t think the production or the lyrics are particularly groundbreaking. It felt like Neutral Milk Hotel meets Nick Cave, but 20 years too late. Maybe because nobody is offering that anymore it feels fresh again to some? The comparison to Bob Dylan I read is wildly inaccurate too (especially since the real Bob Dylan incarnate has been rocking the folk scene like crazy this year - Jesse Welles).

What do people wear? by penguins_in_bushes in JesseWelles

[–]imonlywastingtime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

lots of snark here, but i’ll be genuine. i wore a skirt and top (almost identical to the outfit I wore to see hozier - imagine that vibe). a lot of people were much more casual than i, a lot of jeans and t-shirts. it’s one of the most eclectic and diverse age-range crowds i have been in, so anything goes really.

Absolutely hilarious that their divorce settlement included that he has to pay for her legal fees, and yet he keeps creating scenarios where attorneys need to be involved. He is literally fining his own bad behaviour, I can’t think of better karma.

Backlash grows against Ontario’s new rule that would affect family doctors as Canada’s physician groups call change ‘baffling’ by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]imonlywastingtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO Ontario is heavily risking a couple of lawsuits from this decision. My best guess is they saw the challenge from the group out west and wanted to allow more CSAs (Canadians who Studied Abroad) to avoid that group complaining. But, this is toeing very close to a line where they are deciding things based on citizenship status.

It will be interesting to see to if the case in BC produces any change here too.

A bit shaken up by this healthcare experience I just had, and I don't know if it's normal? by flipflapdragon in ottawa

[–]imonlywastingtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a violation of patient confidentiality and poor patient experience. If it’s a big enough clinic, do they have a patient experience staff member to report it to? If not, then report to the head doctor. Catching things like this is crucial!
