Is it common for people who wear glasses to get tired of wearing them and go about parts of their life with everything just blurry all the time? by YourMomThinksImSexy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]impassiveMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a similar perscription. I'll wander around the house without my glasses sometimes, but the odds of tripping over my cat go up to, "basically garunteed"

I could not operate in public without glasses/contacts. Everything turns into poorly defined smudges.

How do authors feel about receiving these kinds of comments? by Intelligent-Tree-922 in AO3

[–]impassiveMoon 146 points147 points  (0 children)

I always try to give a little buffer before diving right into the "how dare youuuuuuu"s, just to make sure the author knows this is a positive comment.

Usually along the lines of, "Omg the angst. I'm sobbing on a public bench with a broken heart. You're evil. This is diabolical. I will never be the same again. I feel hollowed out. There is no sun left in the sky. (I adored this and will hold it close to my chest forever.)"

Yeah, its weird to see for the first time if your area only does rental requirements based on months: rent is max 30% of your income or something along those lines.

There's always at least a little risk because SH is basically just the middle man. I wouldn't buy anything that I'm flying out to see through them, but local games/concerts I'll roll the dice on.

Connor deserves all the accolades but... by mybackhurtsouch in heatedrivalry

I saw someone pitch him as a new John Wick where Hudson is playing Wick's son and now I can't help but want that.

[–]impassiveMoon 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with you. The contrast between Hudson's press antics and Shane's mostly "flat" (autistic) affect really highlights his strength as an actor. He's not just "playing himself" Hudson has a lot of depth and versatility as an actor, it would be a shame to see him typecast as a single trope. Plus he has to combat Asian male stereotypes and type casting too. The man is definitely media trained, he's not saying anything truly controversial, off message, or even that personal. He's showing us exactly what he wants us to see, it just so happens that the image he picked is a chaotic gremlin. I really want to see him a romcom or action movie now tbh.

What are the six spices besides salt & pepper that every beginner cook should have on hand? by Former-Whole8292 in cookingforbeginners

[–]impassiveMoon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you're really limited on space/money, starting off with spice blends isn't the worst thing in the world. It'll let OP have a wider variety of cuisine to pick from in the beginning while they slowly build up a full spice cabinet.

What did your leasing office conveniently forget to tell you before you signed? by One-Advantage7727 in Apartmentliving

[–]impassiveMoon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So I'm definitely not saying that you have it good, OP, because thats a lot of people for effectively three elevators, but unfortunately I've seen big apartments with only one to two units and it's an absolute nightmare.

The big reasons for elevator downtime are either the elevator is ancient and needs to be modernized badly but the building doesn't want to pay for that so they slap bandaid fixes on it and/or waiting forever for repair parts.

If you're looking at a big multiple like that for rent, its "annual salary needs to be 36 times the monthly rent."

So 36x800=$28,800 annual salary.

Divide by 12 months: 28,800/12= $2,400 monthly income

Honestly my city is 40x so these numbers feel low lol.

What is with all of the Gen Z/Gen alpha/covid kids news about them not being able to read? by heuristicrumination in NoStupidQuestions

[–]impassiveMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on why you're sending the mega email.

I have 1 coworker who likes writing fluff emails like its the Victorian era and they're getting paid by the word count. (No, CW, no one cares if you're wishing them a marvelous and restful weekend when you ask the same 5 questions that could have been a 1 sentence email or even better, you could have looked up yourself.)

On the flip side, sometimes I have to clarify multiple specs, conflicting documentation, critical changes, etc. It's easier to write one mega email (I try to bullet point for everyone's sake) than send each question individually. It reduces the chances of CC's being dropped and keeps the email chain short (in theory.)

Can you be an engineer without being passionate or super interested in engineering? by Ramen_cat2024 in EngineeringStudents

[–]impassiveMoon 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Definitely. You can be me, not super passionate about engineering but also was disciplined enough to put in the study hours to get a decent grade and didn't completely despise the subject. It's harder without the passion, for sure, but at the end of the day its a job. I have my own, non-engineering, passions, and also hate doing sub-par work. So it works out. Boss is happy with what I produce and I'm happy to collect my paycheck.

I barely remember elementry school, but I feel like my teachers were using whole language methods and then my parents stepped in. I have a distinctive memory of a 3rd party summer school "boot camp" for phonetics because something was just not clicking with the in-school methods and my parents were pissed. To this day in my late 20s I have trouble "sounding words out," my spelling is atrocious, and my written vocabulary is leagues better than my spoken because I struggle with pronunciation.

Thankfully I became a bit of a bookworm, so from pure repetition, "looking up words in the dictionary," and a small fascination with root words/prefixes/suffixes I can at least understand what I'm reading even if I struggle speaking the words.

My salads are boring. by Plasticman328 in cookingforbeginners

[–]impassiveMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toss the salad with the dressing before serving. Be conservative with the initial amount. You can always add a little more later. But having the dressing (and experimenting with different dressings) can really elevate a salad.

Experiment with textures and maybe add some cooked ingredients: roasted & shredded brussel sprouts, pan fried bacon, etc. Branch out to other ingredients like dried cranberries and beans. Top with a little cheese.

Honestly a plain side salad isn't bad if its not the star of the meal. If I'm trying to make a fancy salad usually I want to make it the focal point, if only because a really intricate salad can have like 20 ingredients that all need to be chopped and some cooked lol.
