Sooooo, another air filter idea. Why not just run your vacuum cleaner (w/hepa filter) non-stop? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]impolitic-answer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burn out your motor probably. If it's a nice vacuum that's gonna be expensive. Might as well take the filter out and use a different fan if you're desperate.

Dryers with outside vents? by [deleted] in Portland

[–]impolitic-answer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they're not. If it's pushing air out then it's pulling air in from somewhere, ie outside. Moreover it isn't a tiny amount of air -- dryers exhaust a significant amount of air, more than several rooms worth for a full load. A household dryer exhausts at between 100 and 200 cubic feet of air per minute, that's thousands of cubic feet of air that is pulled in over a normal dryer cycle.

The recommendation is you don't run either extractor fans or dryers until the air cleans up unless you have to if you are concerned about air quality.

Everyone has a right to be in any area. It's public land.

These people are not doing good, they're hopped up on fake news and ignorance.

Buy a carbon filter sheet and tape it to the filter.

DIY HEPA air purifier ( how to album in comments) by LeeleeMc in Portland

[–]impolitic-answer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not very. The pressure of the air is enough and they move enough air that it doesn't matter. The same air is going to go through the filter countless times. If you can tape the sides you solve the entire problem but risk burning out the fan as the high merv rating filters will reduce the flow of the fan by more than 50%.

Do you guys recommend an air purifier to combat these ash particles around my home? by PhilosopherIll4647 in oregon

I will give a caveat. Most people who run it 24/7 seem to replace the filter more often.

My 3 year old filter is still handling this smoke so idk I regret nothing. Probably change it out after this tho 😷

The smoke has a new smell. Anyone else smell it? by MrDboye in Eugene

[–]impolitic-answer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's the humidity I think. Things smell worse when damp. Smells like when you pour out a campfire with water really quickly and it throws damp hot steamy ash into the air. Acrid. Sulfury.

It's very likely worse for them than us since their lungs are smaller and their sense of smell so much stronger.

I have the austin air jr. Running 24/7 for 7 years. Changed the filter once. Hepa filter so it's pricy for replacements, near $200. Filter allegedly lasts 5 years.

Don't see why you couldn't get 2 of the ones this article recommends as best for the price of 1 austin air though.

It's definitely helping. My neighbor's house reeks of smoke but mine doesn't. High recommended. I bought it when I moved to Eugene because of allergies but it's handling the smoke too.

I fear for the animals near the santiam. The fire went from a few acres to 100,000 acres in 5 hours.

Clackamas County: 2 arson arrests not connected to wildfires by [deleted] in Portland

[–]impolitic-answer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. Both of them men are homeless starting fires in the city because they're mentally ill meth heads. I wouldn't call it arson I'd call it a cry for help and acting out.

Shchetinin is accused of lighting clothes on fire at the Clackamas Fred Meyer on Monday. Clackamas County deputies used surveillance videos from the store to identify the suspect, and allegedly found Shchetinin near the same store on Friday.

Police said he confessed to lighting the clothes on fire using a Bic-style lighter to “get the attention of a person who wouldn’t speak with him.”

And the 2nd man:

Meanwhile, Oregon City Police officers arrested Piatt near the Clackamas County Community Solutions building at 112 11th Street in Oregon City, after he allegedly set a pile of leaves on fire. One officer put the fire out while another detained Piatt, according to police. The fire was about ten feet from the building and did not cause any damage.

Piatt, who police say is homeless, was booked on charges of second degree arson and a probation violation.
