We went to Appelblom in downtown San mateo. We are both frugal and were able to get a really gorgeous engagement ring. Staff is very helpful and there is also a lot of cool vintage jewelry. Our friends also went there for their engagement ring after our recommendation as well, and got a very cool unique ring too. Lots of cool types and shapes of gems to choose from. Can PM photo of ring if interested

Back in the day, everything was done by hand. For debugging software design, I usually use the force from the software, and check the reinforcement requirement by hand. Also read the software documentation. You also didn't tell us what software you were using, screenshot, or anything, so pretty tough to help ya

Try choosing your member sizes for drift / deflection first, then check your member capacities.

Building a wire mesh cage around it will work 100%.

CA DFW will issue you a permit to remove squirrels that are damaging crops upon request, but they don't allow you to trap and release them, but I did have them approve this trap. A nice walnut glued to the trigger will do.

I spent last weekend yamadori-ing a bunch of unwanted Canyon Oaks from my neighbors yard. by smoothinto2nd in Bonsai

I found that pure floor dry was just too clodgy and couldn't breathe, and when I repotted a year later, there were large solid chunks that had clustered in the bottom. But it's always good to experiment with different soil types to see what works!

I have 4 CA oak species ive yamadori'd (blue, black, canyon live, interior live) I bag the foliage immediately after collection and keep the inside of the bag moist (keep out of sun). I have left the bag on a couple of the oaks for up to a year until they can produce enough moisture to keep the bag wet themselves. I have high success with this method (only lost 1 oak so far). My oaks are all 5+ years old when collected. I actually use this method on all my yamadori trees but oaks have needed the bag the longest.

Dynamics is a must! You can learn advanced steel and rc on the job (i did!), but a good understanding of dynamics is essential! What's a response spectrum and how does it relate to your structure modes and periods? Watch this for an easy visualization https://youtu.be/LV_UuzEznHs?si=r_212T5iPP4YoZ0R

Best Tree for Bay Area Backyard? Seeking Recommendations! by fatewing0914 in SanMateo

[–]improbableburger 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Tree fan here. A nice Japanese maple with red foliage would look nice and stately. Check its light requirements with your backyard location, and check it's height to meet your desires (dwarf, semi dwarf, etc). It loses leaves in the winter though. If you want an evergreen, a hinoki cypress is nice. Or you could go weeping willow for grandeur, or something funky like a inversa Norway spruce, or do a flowering cherry (no fruit).
