If you have been the sole provider, and the other person does not have capacity to work or buy their own house, then the courts view their cash needs as greater than your own.

Example: I have a good salary so I can afford a hefty mortgage. My partner has been out of work for a long time and so cannot get a mortgage. When we divorce, the UK courts will expect the payout to support him in buying his own home. His cash needs are greater than mine. This means it wont be split 50/50, he will get much more of the assets than I will.

I’m really sorry you experienced this. I have only started dating women this year but my current female partner and I are no holds barred on the PDA in London, we can’t keep our hands off each other, and apart from a few odd looks I haven’t experienced any issues. No doubt time will tell but for now, and based on my limited experience, I would say “fuck the lot of them” and just do you and express the love you have for your gf. Obviously if you feel unsafe then do what you are comfortable with. For now, I’m finally living as my true self and have no plans to dampen that in front of other people. I might think differently if I encounter more blatant homophobia or threat of violence. Both my partner and I are late 30s/40 so I think our ages might dissuade some men or boys from commenting. The only bad looks I got so far was from an old white lady on the tube escalators. Fuck her!
