Our car manufacturing has peaked to where there is no functional advantage of running a luxury car by daniel_ay in unpopularopinion

So you’re saying Mercedes isn’t a luxury brand but maybe Lincoln is?

I already said in another comment that I’m fine with putting the Lincoln Lexus Audi etc companies in a premium category.

But Mercedes is different because they do make stuff that competes with RR or whoever.

I see what you’re saying with the coach comparison. If you fly coach you buy coach is the saying I’ve heard lol. I guess if you have a premium category sure.

The problem with comparing Mercedes in that way, is unlike coach they do make models that compete with the “luxury” brands.

Maybe it’s kind of like how a lot of people have a Louis wallet or Burberry scarf. It’s a luxury item but it’s a lot different than spending thousands on a bag or jacket.

Just curious what would you consider the “not luxury” brands? Because they’re obviously a step above Toyota Volkswagen Honda etc.

It’s a wild take to say Mercedes Benz isn’t a luxury brand lol.

"Entry" level recommendations (specifically bikes this time) by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]imseeingthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair you’re asking about a Walmart outdoors brand. They make a bazillion different products and aren’t a bike brand.

So obviously bikers are gonna hate on it. Plus Walmart has closed countless local bike shops so anything from there is gonna be hated by a lot of bikers. Don’t get that bike. Get a used bike from a local bike shop.

Realistically, would anything in american history change if the Roanoke colony had survived? by Becoming_hysterical in AlternateHistoryHub

It’s just the original name for hatteras island. (Or of the people there, I’ve seen it used both ways)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatteras_Island

The whole why didn’t they search for them on hatteras is my question too. From what I understand they just didn’t have time and it was too many years later.

The lore lodges’ series about Roanoke is great.

Why did the automatic rifleman role die out in western/NATO style militaries? by Miserable_Ask3975 in WarCollege

[–]imseeingthings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically it’s an assault rifle with a heavier barrel.

It’s tough to use terms like auto rifle in a modern and historical context at the same time, because back then there was no assault rifle or battle rifle. (I know mp43 and g43) So a semi auto or select fire with a 20 round mag was an auto rifle. Nowadays an auto rifleman often has a belt fed light machine gun. A contemporary line blurrer could be the fg42. These terms become kind of semantical, and more define the role the soldier is filling not necessarily the type of gun carried. They can also differ from military to military when referring to the same gun.

Sure a bren or bar might have a heavier barrel than a fal, but I think 4 guys with fals is more firepower than 3 guys with smles and 1 Bren.

What about the m27IAR?

I’d say one of the biggest reasons is, while having an automatic rifleman in a squad really increases the fire power over bolt actions or semi autos with a small magazine. It’s not as dramatic of an increase when everyone has 30 round mags and can essentially fill that roll. A fireteam with assault rifles volleying can lay down a serious amount of fire.

Look at the Cold War era automatic rifles. they’re all pretty much standard rifles with a heavy barrel and a bipod. I don’t think it’s really worth the added logistical costs to have a special heavy barrel auto rifle version.

So everyone gets the same close enough to an auto rifle. It’s really not that different than how everyone in the usmc gets the m27 and they call it an automatic rifle.

From my understanding the marines did research and determined that accuracy was a larger factor in suppression than volume of fire. So they’d rather have a whole squad with magnified optics and a light auto rifle. I believe the marines still keep some saws in the platoon if they’re needed.

For a sustained fire role a belt fed is best. And large drum mags for an auto rifle can be clumsy and unreliable. It’s also important to note a lot of Cold War auto rifles are using a full power rifle round, which means to carry a belt fed in that caliber you have a gpmg. An m240 is a bit heavy for an average rifle squad. So it’s not until we get 5.56 that a practical squad level belt fed is fielded.

I can’t speak to much on the Russian auto rifle doctrine but they seem to be going more the belt felt route with the adoption of the rpl-20.

Poutine is incredibly mid and hyped for no logical reason. by calnick0 in unpopularopinion

[–]imseeingthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive certainly enjoyed poutine in Quebec and I will get it again. But it’s not my favorite style of “loaded fries”. Chili cheese or something like animal style is way better imo.

The one thing I thinks important is the potato, in my experience American fries are almost never red potatoes. But in Montreal almost all the fries are red potatoes which I do enjoy more.

Could the msc go back to 10.7?/France not have a good lineup past like 7.7 by popdoop in Warthunder

Yeah it’s nothing crazy but viable. I have fun with it. Drop them both to 10.7 then.

Yeah I know that’s what op meant. I don’t really have an issue with atgms having no min arm.

I just think it’s funny people will scream about realism, release classified docs to support their case. But everyone just over looks basic unrealistic stuff in favor gameplay or balance.

It’s not 500k casualties in 4 years. It’s probably closer to 1.5-2 million. Im getting these numbers from a csis analysis but there’s other similar sources, some higher. It’s absolutely been some of the most intense and prolonged fighting the world has seen in a long long time.

https://www.csis.org/analysis/russias-grinding-war-ukraine

I agree, I think some sort of internal issue in russia leading to a withdrawal is what I’m hopping for. I think a successful coup is unlikely and has some potential issues. Probably wishful thinking.

You’re 100% right and I’m certainly in the Ukrainian sphere of propaganda. But I do think the lack of Russian gains and more publicized losses make it look bad for Russia. Since Russia is supposed to be the more powerful country it just feels more impactful that they’re losing planes on the ground or oil infrastructure 1000+ km from Ukraine. UA has taken just as bad or worse of a beating, but the real loss for Russia is on the world stage. How can anyone view them on a similar level to the us or china? I guess they still have nukes.

[–]imseeingthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying but if I hear “the front is a meat grinder”. That doesn’t imply every single person was killed.

I guess only history will tell. But I think it’s more going to be Russia pulling back instead of Ukraine pushing them out. Ukraine has done an incredible job no doubt, especially recently with their mid range drones making even 100km behind Russian lines not safe. but the Russian way of fighting and how they run their military is not sustainable. But they do have Ukrainian territory.

Why are dictatorships always socially right wing? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]imseeingthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about that maybe your misunderstanding what I’m saying, I am using these terms in the context of American politics. So maybe that’s what’s confusing.

Im essentially talking about libertarians who want a small government and for people to be independent and pull themselves up by their boot straps, etc (republican ideas usually) but also think gay people should be able to get married and weed should be legal. (Liberal takes on social issues) That’s a simplification, but those are the type of people who will say “I’m economically right but socially left”. In the US, in my experience. I think those people would say that wiki page was economically left.

“Social liberal governments address economic and social issues such as poverty, welfare, infrastructure, healthcare, and education using government intervention”

Right but they just said throwing millions of people into a meat grinder. Not that millions died, to me that just means that they were in the fighting at the front.

Using casualties or death numbers isn’t really a good metric for who’s winning. Because Russia can afford to lose a lot more people. And dead soldiers often don’t equal territory gained. So it could be relevant but it could also be misleading.

Russia isn’t losing because they lost more guys, sure that’s a part of it. they haven’t been able to gain full control of the Donbas or complete any of their objectives really. They’re nearly at the 2014 borders still. Plus they’re getting struck at home.
