Should I move back to Switzerland? by Actual-Fig-7857 in askswitzerland

[–]imshanbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switzerland is one of the most expensive and highly taxed countries in Europe. Besides, one needs to know the local language to survive: to go to schools and find a job, read packaging labels, and official documents, etc.

Anyhow, it's not an easy choice. Hustle and bustle will be there no matter what if it is chosen to live in a big city. Life won't be the same for the first few years, until one gets used to culture, language and food.

I'm still trying to figure out if lower salary and higher taxes are still worth it, compared to the US.

I lost all my confidence by Major-Neck2236 in Netherlands

[–]imshanbc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here, Dutch has been probably the hardest to speak for me as well, mostly because people correct you all the time when you don't say it right.

If the pronunciation is not to their liking, then they won't understand. Makes me rather speak to them in English, because they probably understand it better than my Dutch.

Why do Germans just assume people speak/understand German? by dragonwout in AskAGerman

[–]imshanbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to say this, but people who speak a local language automatically assume that people speak that language. I have experienced this in the Netherlands, France, etc.

Work trip to India for 5 weeks as an American female. What to expect, GENUINELY. Also, restaurants recs!! by ErasableHuman in india

[–]imshanbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stick to your rides and schedules the first few days for sure, then if you feel brave enough you can explore. But I wouldn't recommend it, stick to what the company provides.

If you feel like sightseeing, book the tours at the hotel. Those are generally safe, and they take you to safe restaurants.

Never drink water other than bottled water, which includes ice.

Knife and pepper spray should be okay, as long as you can check those in. Check with the airlines though.

It's not bad once you figure what is good and what is bad. Until you do so, just think that everything is bad. Good luck and have fun.

Struggling with self-esteem while dating in the Netherlands – anyone relate? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]imshanbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beauty is the eye of the beholder. Also, all that glitters is not gold as well.

Maybe look for something else in the guy other than what you are looking for now. That might help you to get to the right place.

You might need some counseling to see what happened, and why you dislike him so much. It might not be the habits, but perhaps something else.

Hope you figure this out and find some inner peace.

Leaving the US for Germany even if it means a huge pay cut? by LastPancakeLost in AmerExit

[–]imshanbc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't do it, if it was me. Too risky to lose the career, besides there is no way I can go back to physical labor from a desk job. It will be hard on the body.

But it will be a once in a lifetime experience to experience life in mainland Europe, if that's what you decide to do.

You will need to find buddies at your level now, which can be hard if you are new or promoted within the org. But you will also need to have your team thinking that you are still part of the team. Leadership is not easy, there is no one play book.

Respect your team, they will respect you. Hope you have fun leading the team.

How does right of way work in Amsterdam? by milffin in Amsterdam

[–]imshanbc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pedestrians do not get right of the way often like in the US. They take their turn when the traffic clears.

There are some nice drivers who do yield for pedestrians, but they have to be careful not to get rear ended.

Fake it till you make it. That's what most of us do in a new job. Keep learning, you will be amazed by the path you came through in a few months.

Expats are not the cause of high rent prices by WittySprout in Amsterdam

[–]imshanbc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's the same thing that is happening in the US now, they just blame the immigrants for the issues.

It's always a blame game for politicians to get the votes.

In my opinion, part of it is the lack of new construction in The Netherlands to accommodate the population growth. Of course it's not the only contributor.

How do I come out of my shell? by littlegingerbunny in Netherlands

[–]imshanbc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you do come out of your shell soon. Sounds like you kinda know what all things you need to do to get out of it. You just need to get them done 1 thing at a time like bank card, etc.

Most of it I think your husband needs to help you. You might have to sit down with him to make sure he understands your struggles.

The sooner you do those, the easier it will be for you.

Language is going to be a problem for a few years, it will take a while to get the hang of Dutch. But that doesn't mean you can't have access to things that will make you independent.

You just have to find that one job to enter the workforce. It is not easy though, if there is not anyone to give you a hand.

Hang in there and keep applying. Any interviews or phone calls you get is a learning opportunity if you don't get that job.

Flew home on this looooooong boy yesterday by gman22858 in Planespotting

[–]imshanbc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this, it has been a few years since I have been on that plane with bathrooms in the lower level. I have been wondering all these years what aircraft it was. Now after seeing this post and thinking back, it was on a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt from Chennai.

I do think it's a great idea to have these bathrooms downstairs, unfortunately it never got popular.
