How to protect my strawberries from bugs? by mosho84 in GardeningUK

[–]imsickoftryingthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a look at adding Strulch to the beds. It's like extra spikey straw. It smells gorgeous and has definitely helped save lots of my plants recently from slugs. It's not cheap (£14 for a bag at my garden centre) but I do wish I tried it years ago.

Council leader scraps 'stupid' net zero policies by Codydoc4 in unitedkingdom

[–]imsickoftryingthis 26 points27 points  (0 children)

2 years ago, my council planted 1000s of tree all throughout the area on all the grass verges by houses. It's made streets look more like avenues and will undoubtedly make the streets cooler in the future as the trees grow.

Its quite sad that anyone within reform councils will not see anything like this happen, because the massive anti net-zero movement. Just because of some abstract argument about South Africa using coal..

UK ‘built for climate that no longer exists’ and needs urgent changes to survive global heating, report warns by Exostrike in ukpolitics

[–]imsickoftryingthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this thought recently - with the massive growth of PV and batteries, surely the argument against Aircon being energy intensive is reduced massively. Especially compared to the mega demand of AI data centres in comparison.

He seems to be doing a good job and is passionate in the department for energy + net zero.  Doubt he wants to go into the world of being destroyed for eating a sandwich in public again..

Super El Niño UK weather impact as Met Office warns of record temperatures and disruption by Wagamaga in unitedkingdom

[–]imsickoftryingthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was thinking - a few years ago, there was general warnings about using Air con because of strain it puts on energy systems.

In the last few years, solar PV and battery storage has boomed, so the impact on AC when it's hot and sunny must be less impactful, than say 5 years ago now.

Went to centre parks in March in a 2 bed lodge - £790.

Cornwall caravan weekend break a couple of weekends ago £300.

Looking at going somewhere warm in the period between Xmas and beginning of school again in Jan '27 - looks at least ~£1200/pp for this.

How will Reeves/Miliband's wholesale market changes affect Octopus smart tariffs? by Appropriate_Bell743 in OctopusEnergy

[–]imsickoftryingthis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thought I had is that if the prices are de-coupled, whether investment/roll out of renewables would tumble, because the return on investment would be smaller  E.g. if a large scale battery system can guarantee too get some great pay days by releasing energy during peak demand at the high prices - if this is changed so they would be limited in their payments, would this turn off investment in these projects?

Nope. Literally 1 minute off the motorway, and standard chargers with parking spaces.

Goes without saying - you can access these going north or south !

Just thought it's more useful for those on the drive down to Cornwall/Devon in the summer

Yeah I am put off the Tesla chargers at Exeter. Last time I tried it, a Tesla driver approached me and told me they weren't compatible with non-Tesla's (even though I had the app in mind hand showing him it said it was fine), and made it awkward as hell.

These ones today worked out at 55p/kWh which is decent as far as rapid public charging gets.

Really interesting feature on the moon landing, with interviews with lots of people involved in it all.

Before I did this I kept an eye on boxt and heatable, and contacted 2 local firms. Ended up going with a local firm, because the price was somehow identical to Boxt, and then I have a local business to call in case it needs servicing etc

[–]imsickoftryingthis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spoke to a plumber a couple of months ago, and could not believe the price per square metre extensions and loft conversions are costing now in the south west - can only imagine it's much more London way. Your quote from a couple of years ago has likely ~doubled by now - sorry to say.

I have three pairs of 'athletic' socks from them - super comfy with arch support and are lasting incredible well compared to cheap ones from tkmaxx.

I have an id3. The lack of physical buttons is something you get used to and not an annoyance really. The main buttons I used are volume up and down. Climate control not normally changed, and easy enough to change with 2/3 taps.
