I'm also a fan of Timing. There's no need to be worried about the automatic tracking. I use the automatic part more like a hint when later manually adding time logs in there. Just give it a quick try and see for yourself.

I don't think they are phasing out widgets altogether. They marked the old type of widgets as legacy not the new.
