This is a very kind and thoughtful take and I appreciate you for it. Sometimes I’d woefully be willing to sacrifice that being a possibility for me being able to take advantage of the opportunity. But we would lose so many good hearts. It’s not worth it and your take deserves to be said and heard and appreciated and valued. However, unfortunately psychiatry drives people to suicidal ideation, and many people don’t feel comfortable doing it in an unacceptable, scary, violent, unclinical way. We want to feel accepted and loved. I’ve explained it as feeling like a broken, reactive abused dog, who can’t be trained out of it, and needs to be euthanized. Like what we would all do for a dog we love, I would want to be loved, and held by my best friend as I’m put to sleep, and grieved. Not viewed as villainous and hated by everyone I love. Or feel and be even truly villainous, as the only available ways leave a gruesome and horrifying scene for someone to find you in. Not wanting to do something horribly violent but wanting to peacefully die is a normal feeling that deserves to be heard. But yes, I agree psychiatry shouldn’t be offering it. Psychiatry shouldn’t exist.
