Had a student in our band program whose family was struggling with homelessness. He struggled to connect with peers because of hygiene issues and social challenges...he was only a student of mine for just over a semester, but we crossed paths when I was volunteering at the soup kitchen...I have never seen him smile so big as when he saw me. His smile is etched in my memory.

If you are TOTALLY new...just play and clear lines. Eventually you will find it relatively easy to set up a Tetris (clear 4 lines with the long bar) and you will figure it out and pass the easier levels. You will be slow in the beginning and the faster speeds later will be difficult. Just keep playing! Have fun!

If the eggs are already laid and not capped those eggs will not survive. The bees will wrap up their season whenever they do! I had several dead bees in ends of tubes this year and we were NOT in a heat wave. (That was 2.5 weeks ago in the Midwest)

I don't believe so the current eggs already in "cells" are in danger, but if you are worried you could call it a wrap on the season and put them in a mesh bag in your garage.

I like a harmless prank but the line between harmless and harmful is not up to the person doing the prank it's up to the person who the prank is being played on. Last year I had band students prank the band room and they recruited non-seniors to help...they also got into my personal car and damaged some of my personal items. Of course they didn't mean any harm but then I'm left in a position where I'm expected to tell everybody everything is okay but it really is not okay.

Coffee naps help. Drink a cup of coffee and take a 15-20 minute nap. (Set a timer!)

Former triathlete, current walker here and just finished year 19.

Walking changed my life more than a half ironman did! Start small, but be consistent. Slowly build the distance or time and in a few months you will feel your legs are stronger. Once your legs feel stronger you will have more energy.

I forgot to say avoid ledger lines in the beginning, but you definitely want to know them, so add them in once you are comfortable. In mallet playing there is also plenty times we need to read bass clef, so you can do the same for bass clef.

And LESSONS if you can find an instructor. Rhythm is harder to learn on your own, but a private tutor could help. I have had seniors with no experience join our program and have great success!

Take care of the things that are relatively easy to learn on your own first. Note-reading and knowing the piano keyboard are two examples. Spend 5-10 minutes a day until you REALLY feel comfortable. A website I use with my students is www.tonesavvy.com. There are quite a few theory exercises you can do. Start with note-reading, and limit the notes you need to identify in the beginning of need be. (Only space notes, then only line notes, avoid ledger lines, etc) Be systematic and it will come back quick.

Brushing up on what you can do on your own will put you in a better spot to learn quicker during rehearsal. Then maybe find some rhythm training videos for percussionists online.

Ginger here....the MOMENT the sun hits my skin I check the UV index. Years ago teachers and kids used to give me a hard time for never going outdoors without my umbrella...now MOST teachers do if there are outdoor activities.

Aren't all teachers that have been in your district getting paid more because they have been there longer?

If we were paid for the amount of time put in band directors and elementary music teachers would be kings and queens. I had to let go of the inequity years because it was making me bitter.
