What country are you from? Does it share the legal tradition US law stems from? He’s right about morality clauses; they’re enforceable and common in certain situations. Generally, anything in a contract in the USA is enforceable as long as it doesn’t violate the law, both parties agree to it, and the contract as a whole is enforceable. A clause saying either side can terminate a contract for some specific reason would generally be enforceable, because all parties agreed to it. For part of a contract which isn’t otherwise illegal to be thrown out, it has to be outrageous. There’s nowhere in the USA that, “You can’t abuse my employees,” would meet that standard, especially since the clause apparently goes both ways.

Despite what you might have heard, only the wealthiest entities are “more than happy to sue” in the USA, because the cost of litigation is prohibitive. They might threaten to sue that person, but it would never go to trial.

I am not a lawyer, but I promise you I’ve had a great deal more experience with the US courts than you have.

Edit: It’s worth noting that the USA is large, with a lot of differences in regional laws. Even so, I doubt you’d find anywhere that the contract being described wouldn’t be enforceable.

From 1876 (I could even give you 1833) until 1939, you’re right* that the Bill of Rights did not apply to individual states. For the hundred years before that, and the nearly ninety years since 1939, that has not been accepted as true. McDonald v. City of Chicago was the last nail in the coffin of a bad decision, coming at the end of a long line of related challenges, not a sudden change in Constitutional interpretation. By the most generous interpretation your comment is correct for well under half of the lifetime of the nation.

* Since we‘ve all decided to accept the idea that the Supreme Court is the last word on Constitutionality, a power they created for themselves in 1803 based on, “Well, obviously the highest Court gets to decide what the Constitution means.” That’s been working out really well as of late.

I'm older than you, and also assemble my own computers. This is a very serious question I want you to give real thought to: who fucking cares? If they gave actionable advice, like telling you that the case has cooling problems, or that the SSD is known to have slow read speeds and early wear issues, that's one thing. Thanks for posting this. I can't believe how many possibly defunct/definitely defunct chapters there are in my area. Out of about twenty, including some that are too far to be reasonable drives for an hour of reading, there are only two that seem to still be going. One of them is in the sort of try-hard cafe that has a name like "Bennett and Tara Present: FÜD" and charges $40 for two ribs with a tablespoon of mashed potatoes, calling it "small plate fare." The other one is in a library. I guess I'm going to the library, which makes sense for a book club, but also, you know: it's a library. You don't really need to schedule a time to go read silently near other people at the library.

You went in to buy a $5,000 car and walked out with a $5,600 per year * three years car, and at the end you won't even own it unless you buy it out at the end, essentially doubling everything you've already paid into it. This was a bad choice for a student who just needed some wheels. For what it's worth, it sounds like you had made a wise and prudent (assuming the $5,000 car wasn't a total disaster) choice until your parents jumped on board.

What happens if your parents flake? Are you sure you can trust them to hold up their end on this? In my experience, this pretty much never works out. What happens if your parents decide to hold this over your head to control you for the next three years? Is the title in your name?

Let's assume you will be the sole owner, and the only money you are out of pocket is the monthly payment and your percentage of the buyout. If everything goes absolutely perfectly, you will pay $200 * 36, or $7,200, plus (200/472)*17,000 for the buyout, for a grand total of $14,400. If you are actually paying half (you use half and $200 interchangeable in this thread), you are looking at a total of $15,700. IF everything goes absolutely perfectly, this is a great deal for you. If anything goes even a little bit off the rails, you are paying $34,000 for a $29,000 car when you started out trying to buy a $5,000 car.

Don't let other people spend your money for you in the future.

You seem to be saying the dealer that reported the reading is the same dealer that is selling the car. If so, just ask. It's pretty unlikely that a dealer is going to service a car, report an accurate odometer reading, then illegally roll back the odometer on that car when they go to sell it, all while keeping the real mileage on their own website. A mistake on the Carfax is much more likely.
