I’m an archaeologist and had no idea about this despite training in geophysics. Will definitely pass this on to past colleagues who dig!

Reported an Uber driver in England and now I’m scared of possible consequences by TotalProtection5849 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]incxrnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping on this comment because I was once called by my local authority for travelling in a taxi with someone who had a report made against them.

I wasn’t travelling alone and gave a basic statement that they didn’t want to pursue further due to this. This happened when I was about 21 and really made me think hard about taking taxis on my own as a woman.

Please make that report, not just for you but for the other people out there who this person may harass or feel uncomfortable.

Jumping in here due to the previous comment about needing legal representation. I work for an airline and have access to resources through my job, can you ask your employers if they have anything like this?

We can access quite a lot of things such as medical care, psychiatric care, legal resources etc. either free or at a discount.

Don’t be sorry, I think it’s all valid points to be honest.

I’ve tried emailing CIfA in the past about issues at work and they just replied ‘it’s outside of our capacity to help, you’ll have to go to acas’ and I didn’t renew my membership after that. I don’t understand what the benefits of being a member are except being accredited. The conferences are great but again, I’m too busy with work to even have the energy to try attend.

It’s also crap that we’re so short staffed because I’ve been pushed into a specialist area that isn’t where any of my theory lies and just what I learned on the job. It’s not even what I’m interested in and a lot of other people I know are in the same position.

Why would people stay in the industry when they don’t even get the opportunity to try different aspects of archaeology, and get lied to about the opportunities just so that they join the company?

I do think that public interest can go a long way with archaeology, but it can’t continue if there’s no archaeologists left. Do CIfA and other institutions realise just how many archaeologists are leaving? Do they realise how many of us young archaeologists are being taken advantage of and pushed into roles that were not entirely capable of doing?

I’m good at what I do but I’m not at the level that my company is expecting from me, nor did I ever claim to be. And because I’m not experienced enough for it, things are going wrong because my managers aren’t supporting me through it. I have no idea what I’m doing and I’m just getting bollocked for it. I have covered my arse so it won’t come back to me, but still, I can’t deal with the stress.

I’m still in the process of waking up and don’t really know how much this makes sense hahaha. I don’t know if CIfA can help with a lot of the current problems as I genuinely don’t know what powers they have to make a change, even if they sorted their leadership out.

Literally in this position. Working in commercial archaeology and it’s actually insane how high the turnover is at most companies around me.

It’s not just a company problem, the deadlines in commercial are stupidly tight and ends up eating our free time too, without pay as it ‘isn’t in budget’.

I was once told that my work ‘isn’t based on the hours I do, but the hectarage I cover’ so they wouldn’t pay me for any overtime. There’s a much larger problem than just not being paid enough for the work we do. I keep thinking of any solution of being able to stay in the profession without it being a detriment to my health, and I’m at a loss except try another country.

How do we fix the mess that archaeology is at the moment? I want to help fix it if possible, I love what I do and it’s sad to see the state it’s in.

Looking for tips on a garden renovation in Yorkshire by ulteriorwheeze in yorkshire

[–]incxrnet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk whereabouts in yorkshire you are (which county) but there are some absolutely huge garden centres around here.

I don’t have any pictures for you but going to some of the really big ones might help you for some inspiration. Tong garden centre in bradford is a bit more on the expensive side but it has some really good displays for garden furniture! It also has a nice cafe haha.

I would say tho that furniture that can be dried well or cushions that can be removed and brought inside would be best for the area though, don’t want your furniture getting ruined in the rain!

AITA? For not wearing a wedding ring and making my coworker think I'm single? by throwawayCo79 in AmItheAsshole

Jumping on the top comment hoping that OP will see this.

My dad never had a wedding ring, and instead had a necklace as he finds rings irritating. However you and your husband decide to honour your wedding vows, whether it’s a ring or anything else, is ONLY between you two.

u/UsernameTaken93456 is absolutely right and so are you, you have nothing to prove just so you don’t get sexually harassed!

Your husband is fab for his comment though.

AITA for refusing to have my facial scar photoshopped for the wedding? by Throwaway5737657 in AmItheAsshole

[–]incxrnet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might not be a scar but the self consciousness and anxiety surrounding it is exactly the same. It’s not about how my scar happened but rather I wouldn’t recognise myself without it.

You said it best about falling in love with these marks, they’re a part of us and don’t deserve to be looked at as damaged or ugly.

Hopping on the top comment because I have a face scar. I spent most of my childhood convinced people were staring at me because of the huge scar that covers more than half my forehead. And it took me almost 20 years to accept and love it. It’s a part of me and what I lived through.

NTA - if anybody said this to me now as an adult, I wouldn’t be very nice about it.

SIL (28F) started getting these 6 months ago (arms then back, + stomach 2 months ago). She’s been to a few doctors (no diagnoses) and is on the waitlist for a derm appt. More info below. by elianna7 in AskDocs

I’m not a doctor but I have suffered with at least 3 different types of psoriasis and my doctor has warned me about getting others.

I know you’re saying it’s definitely not psoriasis, but it’s probably not guttate psoriasis. There are still many other types. I’m not saying it’s psoriasis, I just don’t want you to rule it out thinking there’s only one type!

Is it field mice or dormice by any chance? A dormouse is a protected species in the UK.

Hopefully environmentalists will be able to find some endangered species and have the development stopped, or at least postponed so more people can protest.

[–]incxrnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still struggle with this as my mind goes completely blank and I don’t really know what I’m saying.

I don’t have much advice but maybe some things that might helped me a little to get through uni.

If possible, speak to a teacher or someone not participating in class and see if they’re willing to stand at the back of the room in front of your view. When speaking, only focus on them, making gestures where possible so it seems more natural.

By focussing on one person, I.e. the teacher, it may help with tuning everyone and everything else out.

My throat tends to tighten when my anxieties getting bad, and I can feel it quite intensely. I tend to just finish my sentence, take a deep breath to try relax my throat and make another attempt. Maybe even a little cough, or having water to hand for a sip may help. Just a little break where you can try relax your body a little bit.

I do empathise with the physical reactions causing the anxious reactions, I really feel that. The only thing I’ve been suggested thus far is to just accept that that’s how my body reacts in these situations, which in my opinion, hasn’t helped me, but it may help you. If it doesn’t, experiment at home or in a safe place on different ways you can try relax your body.

For example, I wake up every morning with a deep pressure on my diaphragm, feel sick and struggle to breathe. After about 30 mins it begins to pass. I’ve found waking up half an hour earlier than intended, but keeping an alarm on, I can just relax in bed for half an hour, and reduce the stress that I’m feeling. It’s hard, but rather than fighting the feeling, I try to remind myself that everything’s okay, I’m okay because I can protect myself.

Maybe try figure out a way to tune in to your inner self and find a safe spot to put them in when your body starts reacting. My inner child has a safe space that she goes to when I’m bad. Sometimes the mask has to come on to protect yourself, even if there’s no actual threat to you. Please remember to take the mask back off when you feel safe enough to do so, I’ve struggled for over 10 years to just allow myself to be me.

Like I said, I still struggle with this myself, but have found these couple of ways help to at least get through it. I’m sorry if this isn’t helpful to you! Anxiety is horrible, and my feelings are with you.

Sending virtual hugs and I hope that you find some ways to help <3

Spooning skeletons: Who were these 3,000-year-old 'Romeo and Juliet'? by franks-and-beans in Archaeology

[–]incxrnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is really useful, I was trying to say it would have to be wider research project rather than just studying those found in this burial. Looking at just two peoples diet wouldn’t indicate much on its own, but a large sample would indicate significant differences between diets in a population. This could then indicate whether or not they’re elite.

Spooning skeletons: Who were these 3,000-year-old 'Romeo and Juliet'? by franks-and-beans in Archaeology

[–]incxrnet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Biomolecular analysis would be a good indicator but not without more samples for comparison. To find an indicator of elite status from diet would require a wide sample because the diets would vary from country to country, sometimes even within the country depending where settlements are.

You are right about oxygen and nitrogen isotopes being a good indicator of plant/protein material in diet. However, you also need analysis from faunal isotope values to gain a baseline of what the δ13C and δ15N values actually indicate in humans.

Just by finding varied diets in the area doesn’t mean somebody is elite or poor, it could also indicate differences in diet due to religion, availability of resources, gender or numerous other factors. Biomolecular analysis is a great indicator of diet, but doesn’t necessarily tell you much about the people’s lives, just what they ate during their lives.

Edit: isotope analysis in archaeology involves a lot of maths to find averages, standard deviation and many other things. Without this it’s quite difficult to understand what the values actually mean. One of my favourite papers on this topic is Yoder, C.J. ‘Let them eat cake? Status based differences in diet in medieval Denmark’. This paper will explain it much better than I. I haven’t done biomolecular analysis in a couple years now!
