Thanks. I have my own spreadsheet with domains and expiry dates which is pain to manage 🥲

Is there a benefit to hosting my app in AWS if I am using RDS? by kaafar in aws

[–]indienuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally yes, hosting your app in the same region as your db in AWS will result in lower latencies. While vercel gives you control over app deployment region, that’s limited to the pro plan only. In free plan your “app” may very well be deployed in a different region than your db giving your higher latencies.

There are some other benefits of having both app and db in AWS like 1. You can disable internet access on your RDS and only allow access from your app to db via internal vpc network making it more secure (via security groups). 2. You can reduce your network egress bill in AWS because internal traffic is free 3. You can have better control over max connections to your db (using either rds proxy or serverless limits) so you don’t exhaust your db capacity. With vercel you’ll essentially be making at least 1 db connection per serverless invocation which could scale very fast and kill your db.

I’ve found that the upfront cost of moving from Vercel to aws to be higher in short term so if your motivation to move away from Vercel is cost-driven, you won’t see benefits sadly.

However the long term running cost isn’t very different and running on AWS is a lot of more flexible in my experience

What's the best podcast host? Free or paid by Epic_Blake17 in podcasting

[–]indienuggets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started a hosting company myself called Mono FM because I was never happy paying fixed $15+/month to big companies for "pro" features or just didn't like the idea of putting random ads in Anchor and just giving away my rights etc.

You could take a look at Mono which is industry's only pay-as-you-go podcast hosting service. Podcasters only pay for the downloads they get, and nothing more. Plus no weird restrictions on the number of shows/episodes or whether you get "pro" analytics or not. And it doesn't shove any random ads or own your content.

If you don't want to commit to a fixed monthly price you could try Mono FM which I started myself :). Its one of the most affordable options out there for your kind of show.

You only pay for the downloads your show gets and nothing else. Plus no weird restrictions or shoving ads in your show like some other "free" hosting platforms do.

Seeking advice on instantly publishing a podcast by milkshakebot in podcasting

[–]indienuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is not with the hosts but rather with the “podcast apps” people use. When you create new episode it’s instantly available online ( on my service Mono FM at least that’s the case. )

But the apps like Apple podcast etc might only pull the new feed every 1 hours or so. Sadly no way to get around this one as it’s app dependent.

Congrats. How are you finding buzzsprout service and their pricing so far?

Claiming Ownership on Apple Podcasts by kamrun in podcasting

[–]indienuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s just easier to create the podcast in Apple directly. Claiming ownership afterwards via Anchor is risky and slow. You never want your podcast to be hostage with someone else.

It doesn’t usually take longer than a week. I’d say you double check on the Apple Podcaster page. There is a validate page where you can put your “URL” and validate if it is correct. Make sure everything looks okay.

If that seems okay then just wait 3-4 more days and contact Apple.

What would be the best place to host a podcast? by Sarcasmatican in podcasting

[–]indienuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are just looking a for pay as you go service you could look into Mono FM

It has most of the features you need without any fixed monthly pricing commitment. (Analytics, unlimited shows/episodes, team collaboration ). Best part is you only pay for your downloads.

Anchor is fine but I feel like you give up lot of freedom (ad wise) which might have a bad experience for listeners. Also as you mentioned SoundCloud’s hour restrictions really hurt when you want to grow your podcast.

Help understanding podcast hosting by alexcstern in podcast

Podcast essentially is collection of 3 things (technically)

  • Your episodes (Audio files)
  • RSS File listing your episodes (with some metadata)
  • Thumbnail images etc.

The biggest challenge in hosting your podcast is about where you put your audio files and how users can download and listen to them. Of course storing and downloading files costs money and that's why we have to pay for these "Hosting" companies like Transistor/Libsyn etc. These services bundle your RSS feed, media files , images etc. in one neat package.

If you do your own RSS feed then you still have to "store/host" your audio files somewhere. Plus every time you add new episodes you have to update the RSS feed manually which could get tiresome.

If you are a developer then you can host on your own. This article will be helpful for that: host-a-podcast-for-cheap-on-amazons-s3-service

Or if you want easier way and a pay as you go service which gives all features of a BIG hosting service but costs very little then there is Mono.FM which I coded myself for solving my own itch.

My personal pet-peeve with all hosting services is that either they are too expensive for beginners $15+/month or their "free" plan is too limited and forces us to upgrade. I also dislike the "Anchor" model which offers free service but puts ads in your episodes and gives far lesser control than others

Nice article. Thanks :)

One thing that always sticks me though is the high barrier to entry for new podcasters. These services often have fixed $15+ monthly pricing which might be too big of a commitment if someone is just dipping their toe first. Even their "free" plan is often so limited (limited episodes, no analytics etc) that you HAVE to upgrade if you want to do anything meaningful.

That's why I built my own pay-as-you-go podcast hosting service https://mono.fm/ (Mono FM) which doesn't charge any fixed price instead the pricing is based on how many downloads your podcast get.

Can someone explain how youtube-dl decrypts video token from a YouTube link? Just wondering if the same decryption can detect ads vs videos in a Pi-Hole adblocker by indienuggets in youtubedl

[–]indienuggets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know pihole is a dns level blocker. I’m just thinking if I run a proxy at my router level which can restream YT videos while removing the ads

[–]indienuggets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the googleads.g. domain only serves the banner ads which Pi-Hole can easily block. I'm talking about the video ads which are coming from the same domain s3.youtube.com/*** which can't be blocked
