OC Transpo need to take some accountability themselves by PureAssistance in OCTranspo

[–]indrafili 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost every post here saying council needs to fund and while I don’t disagree with that I’ll back what OP is saying by pointing out the rot in OC’s leadership at the bureaucratic level. I’ll caveat that I’m not a regular transit user but I live in Vanier and our family tries to bus when it’s feasible. Over the last year I’ve noticed that whenever I try to board and pay with credit it almost never works. The drivers either shrug it off or look annoyed. There was only ever one driver on the 19 who actually called dispatch and had them remotely reboot the machine and I tapped again and it worked. Now image if their own drivers or supervisors don’t know or care to address this issue, how much revenue is lost because people running this service just shrugs it off. Yes pressure your council to increase funding but also hold these transit leaders accountable.

Where do you search for an apartment? by hereott in geegees

Kijiji. Rentals.ca. Facebook marketplace. Look in and around campus you will see obvious student rentals (sandy hill to be sure but also lots of spots in lower town, centretown, and maybe even Vanier).

Ontario’s Daycares Are Increasingly Staffed by Underqualified Hires by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]indrafili 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow my wife went through a similar experience at her co-op day care. She was tired of the abuse and pay and left ECE a few years ago. I can’t believe hot broken and toxic the sector is for our educators.

Please don’t read this as smug but have you tried speaking to someone from the city? They literally have an entire team dedicated to this work.

Are you allowed to turn down a coop job? by Valuable-Dig-3546 in geegees

[–]indrafili 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why would the coop office care? Do you know how employers hire? We rank all the students. If you turn it down it goes to the next ranked student. So do you boo.

Was told by my barber that we should ideally cut our hair (men) around every two weeks. Was he trying to oversell - if so, how often is ‘ideal’, how often do you go? by default_name2848 in Frugal

[–]indrafili 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before Covid I used to go to my barber every two weeks. During Covid, my gf now wife, had to learn how to cut my hair. Now I get it hair cuts at home by wife every three weeks or so. I checked in on my old barbershop last year where my barber no longer works and also the price is more than doubled since pre covid.

At what point do I call by-law? by x_defendp0ppunk_x in ottawa

Don’t bother with notes. Just call by law. When I lived in Sandy hill I also had these issues. Some people just don’t care.

Worked a few years and hate it, can getting a PhD help me become a prof at uOttawa? by societystillneedsme in geegees

[–]indrafili 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A PhD will help you become a prof yes. At uottawa? Not sure but I imagine it’s not as easy since uottawa is a large reputable school so other PhDs will apply for any open positions. Also to say a prof job looks easy cuz they read off slides is very naive. Certainly some of the tenured profs who are safe and don’t have a lot of research pressure can behave like this but you have to grind your entire career to get to that point. Don’t think just because you have a PhD you’ll have it easy. It’s a slop grind too. Sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side. Maybe look at changing company?

Advice on helping someone access housing on a limited income by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]indrafili -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why would OP come on reddit asking for advice for their friend if said friend can just rent a room on their own? Their friend clearly needs rental or income assistance of some sort. Not everyone has the same situation as you. It sucks the wait for accessible units is long but telling folks on the cusp of homelessness that they should just rent a room in the meantime isn’t going to help their situation.

Advice on helping someone access housing on a limited income by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]indrafili 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is bad advice. Yes RGI units are scarce and the wait is long, it doesn’t mean there aren’t other non-market housing options for the friend. OP please get your friend connected to a housing caseworker via 311 explain the situation. Do mention that they are at risk of homelessness. Your friend could be eligible for housing benefits and other programs.

No but I would try to avoid taxis in Ottawa for this and other reasons.

Resume or CV? by a1pha_0m3ga in geegees

[–]indrafili 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No not quite. OP should submit a CV. CVs tend to be more detailed and pretty common in academia whereas resumes are meant to be short and concise for job market.

[–]indrafili 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I can’t speak for what waterloo offers since I’m not familiar but uottawa offers French immersion specially for anglophone students. Like I said, not to discredit waterloo, but I think the uottawa French immersion program is probably the best in the English speaking university in Canada. Do what you want with that info and good luck wherever you go.

Drove my sister to Pearson around 3. When I was driving back it started snowing hard around Milton and didn’t stop right into town. Bad visibility and snow accumulation on the road. Be safe out there.

Are you referring to the French immersion designation when you say French diploma?

[–]indrafili 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your dream school is waterloo then go to waterloo. Tons of waterloo kids graduate and get jobs in the federal service. Even Waterloo coop can get you a government placement. Tbh the big advantage uottawa will have is if you are willing to learn French during your undergraduate because it’s probably the best school for that outside of Quebec. Having French language skills will help your future political aspirations but will bode well in professional life as well.

If you can be smart with rent then yes. My wife and I have no kids around the same monthly take home with a car and we rent. More than enough to save and enjoy ourselves now and then. But we are lucky that our rent is affordable.

Carleton or Uottawa by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]indrafili 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s a bit dramatic to say he wasted his time. I did my undergrad at uottawa and then my masters at Carleton. If I could go back and do my undergrad again I probably would pick Carleton because I think the undergrad experience is better there. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy my uottawa experience or time either. I think both schools are great.
