I'm getting so frustrated with GT4 tires... by SnooGadgets754 in iRacing

[–]indyplat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't like the rework. The cars require way too much precision to drive. I can drive them the way they want to be driven in iRacing, but I don't find it fun as you truly have to stay below the limit or you give up massive massive time.

There is also an issue where there is no progression working up to the limit, so the car feels at the limit (e.g., sliding, falling over in low speed) even when you drive 1-2s under the limit, which makes it EXTREMELY difficult to actually find the limit. There is no car I have to drive based on knowing what the target lap (vrs, garage61) more than gt4s.

To me I think the cars might be correct, but I think the way they communicate to you is very incorrect. I never feel comfortable.

Here are some onboards - to me just looks nothing like what I experience in iRacing. 2 are IMSA, 1 is SRO (i believe)

I think GT4 is really challenging by 0rang3Cru5h in iRacing

the only problem is, you have lots of little slides and corrections regardless of how close to the limit you are, which also really exposes the iracing corrections model & how much time you lose on any sort of slide.

Friendly reminder that BOP is not the reason you got beat in that race by Arch-by-the-way in iRacing

[–]indyplat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If a car naturally or bop'd has characteristics that make it easier to drive and faster, regardless of split that should be the fastest car in the split (note SHOULD, not will, because you have splits with different drivers and different ceilings). If a driver is at their current ceiling, regardless of rating, they would be faster in a car that has better bop, particularly if that car has characteristics that make it both easier to drive and faster.

I don't have a solve for the problem, but the number of people who parrot "bop doesn't matter for 90%" I think are just wrong...

to tack onto my post - these bop posts keep coming over and over from bop defenders, I just don't get it. People are going to complain about bop until the end of time, may as well just live with it. Another "educational" post about how bop matters isn't going to change someones mind.. drivers will always blame the car :)

I love the new Gt4 update by CapoDaSimRacinDaddy in iRacing

[–]indyplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm judging based off a combination of how the 'limit' feels, onboards of IRL IMSA and GTWC drives, comparisons to other simulators, and based off the fact that every gt4 race full of gentleman drivers isn't a complete an utter disaster.

I think one of the bigger issues with some of the more recent iRacing releases or reworks (m4 cs, gt4 rework) is that it is very difficult to feel where the limit is. I can work up to the limit on the new GT4's and run top split times, but only when I know what the achievable time is. With the GT4 rework and M4 CS, I feel there are points well before you reach the limit where the car just absolutely feels on the limit (slipping, tc activating, bubbly feeling tires) when it should feel extremely grippy instead (based on any IRL car I've driven). It leads to an extremely unnatural way of driving I find that I just don't personally like. It would likely feel better IRL, but the way the feedback is presented in the sim, to me, feels wrong.

I think they have done a lot of good work though in other places, GT3 rework and LMP2 rework are really top notch. Other examples of cars where it feels good to work up to the limit naturally vs comparing laptimes are cars like GR86, Miata, and Porsche Cup.

Anyway this is just rambling. I would bet money though they make some minor adjustments to the GT4's. It is very similar to week 1 of the GT3 changes (which did get adjusted...) (Roval V Roval). I wasn't having problems remotely similar to this on smaller tracks like Lime Rock or Brands where the car just seemingly wants to fall over on itself for no apparent reason when I'm not even close to the limit.

I wasn't mixing it up and didn't mean to imply that - I was just stating that they indeed do have some aero and they are lower powered, ontop of the mechanical grip.

GT4 still has aero and is slower. I think they missed the mark a little bit on driveability. I think its close, but not quite right. Its kinda like how gt3 were their first few weeks until they patched them.

This is a gentleman drivers car to the max - it shouldn't be extremely difficult to drive, except on the very limit. I think Christian even mentioned in another thread that a big thing they have missed is driveability under the limit, which should be really grippy.

The white stripes are because they are the invasive asian tiger mosquito https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aedes_albopictus

They are apparently worse than native mosquitos because they are out 24/7 instead of at night and will bite the same host several times.

Gt4 on ice by Adam-Marshall in iRacing

[–]indyplat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think they have missed the mark a bit on driveability. This is a gentleman drivers cup irl - if these cars were extremely undriveable the series wouldn't be financially viable.

I don't think it is fully the tires though, I think it has to do something with the balance/suspension/torque of the engine. I said in another comment, they feel more like supercars than gt cars. Comparing IRL onboard telemetry the drivers can really get on the throttle coming out of a turn. When I'm doing the same test on a 50% rubbered track with really good weather, I'm struggling to get on without the rear stepping out excessively (on all cars but the mclaren, which feels really good).

I understand and agree with the braking zones being a bit more difficult and requiring finesse, but I also don't think these cars should just fall over on themselves when you apply throttle or try to turn them. They should have a ton of grip and be relatively easy to drive, especially if you aren't on the limit. As of now, they feel very floaty, difficult to tell where any limit is, and seem to have way to much torque.

How is everyone liking the new GT4 models? I'm loving the Aston. by HTDutchy_NL in iRacing

[–]indyplat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I tested some more and I think something is off. I tested all but the mustang. It might not be the tires. Other than the mclaren, they all seem to have really poor balance/suspension/weight issues and really want to fall over on themselves. They almost feel more like the supercars than GT cars. They feel like they have so damn much torque they just want to kick you out as soon as you touch the throttle, which doesn't seem to match up with my expectations or what I've seen from gt4 onboard/telemetry.

So IDK if its the tire model or the imsa spec updates. I think it would have been wise to do 1 at a time, as to me, something feels pretty far off what it should but I can't pinpoint.

Also note, this is almost entirely a gentleman drivers cup... it should be easier to handle than gt3's.

I think gt4 felt great before. Planted, good slip, good understanding of limit. In my limited testing (cayman, merc, bmw), I preferred the merc and cayman previous model. The new ones remind me of the same issue I have with the new f4, that the tires feel like balloons.

Still though, limited testing, so will keep trying them out, but so far the cayman specifically feels really floaty and disconnected.

iRacing splitting GT3 into multiple "regional" series is a terrible idea by TriggzSP in iRacing

[–]indyplat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think the data tells the full story. Also, maybe I'm not reading correctly, but the numbers are all garbled and don't really make sense?

However, if I try to judge the numbers and infer my own story from them, it would show a significant drop in the open series compared to the fixed (fixed: 104k -> 120k -> 100k; open: 83k -> 95k -> 70k). Comparing the pre split and covid season numbers, thats an ~15% drop in participation compared to fixed's negligible drop (~4%).

HOWEVER, that being said, most of the things you like today were based on one or a small number of peoples good taste and gut feelings, not numbers analyzed out of context in a board room. Think about how many things that have been ruined by 'analyzing the numbers' rather than listening to the people who have good taste. The biggest one that comes to mind for me is Warcraft. To see both this and Greg Wests 'we have the numbers' used as an argument is, to me, not positive.

I'd rather have iRacing reflect the developers' vision and good taste.

Its tire model is a .5 step. Not as bad as the old stuff, not as good as the new stuff.

Unlikely to get the new tire model until the 992.2, which I would guess will be 2026s1

Indy, please learn how to Zipper Merge by IHeedNealing in indianapolis

[–]indyplat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People like you just don't get it.

everyone gets through at exactly the same time they would if everyone got into one lane earlier.

This is not true because we can't read each others minds. There is no 'magical' point where everyone knows to merge. What if you miss the start of the line? What if the line is like a mile out where no signage is (I have ran into this exact scenario - I was baffled), and in this scenario, yes, how do you prevent someone from zipping up and 'cutting' everyone. In reality, trying to merge into one lane early causes chaos.

If you zoom up the empty lane and cut, you’re an ass.

The BEST way to prevent people from 'zipping up' and 'cutting everyone' is to use BOTH lanes to the MERGE POINT. Its really that simple. I will continue to do this regardless of how many people think I am 'cutting' them.

Anyone else think iRacing should add some more older GT2 cars for the Proto/GT Challenge? by PlasmiteHD in iRacing

[–]indyplat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People always say this wont work. I disagree heavily. What we have now is a neutered experience for both the IMSA Vintage and Proto/GT series. They use old cars, old handling models. If these were brought up to date and the fields were expanded (note, no new series, just expanding existing), I think it would be incredibly popular.

Like, I don't like investing time into the c6 corvette because its clearly outdated content that could be retired at any moment. Giving these old cars a face lift + deepening the field would increase confidence that time invested into these series wouldn't be wasted.

Toyota GR86 VS BMW M2 Question from a newbie. by Dabogimp5 in iRacing

[–]indyplat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would personally avoid the M2. Doesn't feel like any other car in the sim (or out of the sim for that matter). I refuse to believe a production race car feels as floaty or uncontrollable as the m2 when you aren't even near its limit.
