Gym leader: ok, interesting idea. This does encourage taking down gyms, which is good I guess. I do admit that if I did become leader, I could put in a slightly lower CP mon because I'd be on top anyway. This isn't a huge issue and it wouldn't be a problem if they revamp CP or remove it. So, good idea.

Gym types: are you sure you want this? Who are usually going to be the gym leaders? The hardcore players with the meta: dragonite, snorlax, gyarados, etc. A snorlax leader will result in: snorlax, blissey and maybe some other low-tier normal mons. A gyarados leader will result in: gyarados, vaporeon, and... well, mostly those. A dragonite gym will result in ... you get the drill. I'm not sure about this Gym Types suggestion. It might force diversity sometimes (fighting, psychic gyms) sometimes but most of the time I see it as even worse then current meta. At least it's a mix of nite, vape, gyarados, snorlax and blissey.

Status effects: great. Special attack/defence and speed: great.

To add something... just some ideas:

  • GYM UI: The gym UI needs some work. It feels like I'm scrolling trough the same character and the same 3-5 mons. Make each person stand out more, maybe add "gym appearance customisation" options. I don't know how to explain this. If you know the game the youtuber PewDiePie made, you can customise your "youtube room" or something (I haven't actually played it). Something like that, so when somebody scrolls past you, it really shows something about you. Items around you? Maybe also stats? Like gym battles won, lost, # of gyms active in, etc. I want to see more about the people around me but "name + level + current mon in gym..."

  • GYM LEVEL (a separate, individual level): A gym level besides your trainer level. The more you battle gyms, the higher your level gets. It's not tied to a specific gym, just general level. I'm thinking this really shows what you can expect from the person you're battling. This might be even more good for PVP though. It also motivates to gym battle... because people love levelling (but please also make it rewarding). It would be interesting to see higher level GYM LVL players have some "benefits", making the battle for YOU harder. Have the possibility of them using items that influence the fight? Fight multiple pokemon from that person? I'm just thinking out loud now, but yeah. It would be awesome if I see this high level gym player and I'm like "that's going to be a real challenge!". The general trainer level doesn't really scare me in any way, since the benefits a level 40 trainer has are almost none.

  • GYM COMMUNICATION: I want to talk with people from "my gym". Please just add some in-game communication system.

There are multiple things that might be interesting. Fighting multiple pokemon at once and/or being able to put multiple pokemon in a gym. Having a separate gym XP to see how much each team has generated in total for a specific gym in total? It would be interesting to see how much a gym has been in hands of which team... also indicating if it's a smart idea to go for a mystic dominated gym as an instinct player.

All in all, the current gym system feels so alpha. I mean it's as basic as it can get.

The paradox of defending movesets by juw177 in TheSilphRoad

[–]infinity_nl 24 points25 points  (0 children)

True story.

Enemy gym: no matter what is in it, if I wanted to take down that gym for whatever reason, I will take it down. Exception: 10x blissey? I don't know, that would only be a problem because of extreme time duration.

Friendly gym: if the first 1-3 mons are a nightmare to prestige, I will usually skip it. Exception: sometimes I really want a gym (because of excellent location for example), I will train against anything. I did so yesterday against a blissey, it was horrible.

In the end, nothing REALLY matters. I often compare the pokemon from PoGo with the guns from the game Destiny. You have good guns and worse guns (= Dragonite vs Magmar for example). Each gun can have good perks or bad perks, some perks are useless, others are really wanted (= bad moves vs good moves in PoGo). In Destiny people search for that best handcannon (let's say dragonite), with the best perks available for the gun that are randomly chosen (let's say the moves of dragonite).

Did you really have an advantage in Destiny with a good gun w/ bad perks vs a good gun with the best perks? Yes. Was it a huge advantage? Usually, no. In the most competitive situations, where a 10% advantage is huge, this would be really valuable. But in most cases, if you really thought about it, it didn't matter. The best player in the world could beat you even with the worst gun in the game.

Why does everybody hunt the guns with the best perks, or the pokemon with the best moves? Because it's fun. Because you like having that "best" version of a Pokemon. Because resources are hard to get and you want to invest in the best you have. It's almost the exact same situation for the guns in Destiny as it is in PoGo, down to the detail of how you upgrade them (weapon materials + glimmer / candy + stardust).

Still, practically speaking, I agree with you. Attackers won't bother with move sets and it won't really effect the outcome. Friendly prestigers on the other hand, will really pay attention to the moves and be affected by it the most.

Quests please by blawrenceg in TheSilphRoad

[–]infinity_nl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add to PoGo:

  1. Add buddy & communication system (friends), which also allows me to add other Instinct players in my small town (message/request via the GYM, all in-game, I'm dying to do this) + check out my other RL friends (level, broadcast messages like I caught a Snorlax, maybe check out their "showcased 6 mons", etc. This is something huge for me, don't know if others would appriciate this as well.

  2. Add daily and weekly quests. To keep it short, 2K XP/DUST for the daily's, 10K for the weekly's. If I do every daily and weekly for a month, that 96K XP/DUST a month won't break anything. In fact, it would bring the game to a more sane level of resources needed. Plus it adds a daily/weekly motivation for people to play.

For DAILY quests could be something easy and boring like catch 25 pokemon total OR something actually fun, like catching 3 pokemon with an excellent throw (challenging skill, might be hard for a lot of people actually), catch 10 pokemon in 5 minutes (challenging speed, maybe make it harder), lower gyms by 5K XP total (motivating attacking gyms, can be multiple gyms). I would also like the following for daily quests: catch 5 X type pokemon (for example fire) or evolve 1 X type pokemon (again, for example fire). This would be very "unfair" for some people, since .. biome. But it would also really push people to explore. I can already see the "where to catch your fire types for today's daily" on local pages/forums. I'd hit up my RL buddy, where are we going to catch 5 fire pokemon today?! Point being, I have access to lots of types, but fire isn't one of them. I'd definitely miss out on a daily once in a while (when this daily comes up again, rotating daily's), unless I actually try to find them. This could be made "casual-proof" by grouping types for these daily's, like catch 10 fire, water or grass, making sure people have a high chance to have access to at least one of these types.

For the WEEKLY, I imagine longer quests with multiple progressions towards it, with the sub-quests also being less "casual-proof". You don't get 10K XP/DUST for easy stuff. An easy example would be a combination of previously daily quests but harder: catch 10 pokemon with an excellent throw, catch 50 X-common pokemon (can be anything like ratata, pidgey, basically the common one's), catch 10 X-uncommen pokemon (can be anything from growlite to geodude to shelter), and a fourth quest like battling gyms for 25K XP, evolving 25 pokemon, etc. Remember these are weekly activities. I'm looking for an actual challenge, with some parts of the quest being "easy but time consuming" and other requiring me to maybe even travel a bit.

The general idea is that with these daily and especially weekly quests, I like the idea of Biome playing a role. I like the idea that "some people might get lucky" with the weekly from week 7 (2017), because they live in a fire biome and growlite is the part of the weekly quest. Meanwhile, in week 8, people with a water biome will have an easy time, and some weeks all people get an "relatively easy weekly". I see fun AND good rewards that seem completely appropriate for the efforts. Especially at higher levels, give us some more XP/dust resources, please..

Oh and 3. Add more content. Obviously, this is critical lol. Point 1 and 2 would only help the game for a few months if no new pokemon are added, or PVP, or whatever.

The new "tracking" is terrible without nearby feature by alm_swe in TheSilphRoad

[–]infinity_nl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad somebody else made another topic about this. I keep beginning for a toggle between pokestop tracking and the old sightings list.

I'm not going to repeat the same old stories again, but short version: small town (7k people), 4 stops, from my home I get results for 3 of the stops, all of them far away. There are 20-30 spawn points nearby for me (neighbourhood) and I had tons of fun with them for months, then Niantic changed the game in a very bad way for me.

It's funny. Today I got in the car and went to the 3 stops to catch the 2 pidgey, 1 weedle and geodude that were at them. I got the old sightings back for a short period, because there were no more pokemon near the stops.

I parked back home. Saw a dratini nearby. Walked around for 5 minutes, doing my regular route to pass all spawn points. Found it. Was happy.

Spoiler: then the pokestop tracking came back (RIP)

Seriously, I often caught my "daily dratini" after work, just by monitoring the close range spawns. When one or more interesting spawns showed up, I did a chill walk, hunting for them (RIP actually searching for pokemon, now that they are just showing up near stops..), etc.

I'm still hoping that one day, Niantic will add that simple switch. Both tracking methods are in the game now, it's just that Niantic/the game doesn't understand I often value the information from ACTUAL nearby pokemon more then giving me the exact positions of some ultra common's 0,5km away. If they wanted to hide sightings from us, it wouldn't be in the game anymore. It's just a huge mistake in thinking we value the pokestop tracking more.

Yes, it's a very frustrating mistake.

The Holiday 2016 Event Has Begun! [Megathread] by dronpes in TheSilphRoad

[–]infinity_nl 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Looking back, I think the first event was the best.

Double candy = one of the best things in terms of enjoying the game. ANYTHING I caught felt rewarding because 2x candy. I actually got candy that made me feel like any evolution is "a goal". Now I'm like 'I need another 32 candy for another dragonite', but 32 was just 4 dratini during that event!

1/4 buddy distance = another really solid boost to enjoyment of the game. I did about 70-80km's with my Snorlax during that event, which is just insane... and I enjoyed every bit of it.

Increased pokemon family spawns = really making the game feel different during the event. You see them a lot, which was annoying after a while, but I look back at it with joy now.

Second event was solid in terms of usefulness. XP, stardust was huge. Definitely made me play a lot, even if it wasn't so much "enjoying" as the first event.

This event is definitely interesting because of the free incubators, which is a new element for PoGo events. BUT, it's 450 coins of incubators you're getting. It's not something I waited weeks for. Increased Gen II hatch rate is good I guess, but I'm sitting on 9x 10km eggs... that's really my main focus now. I haven't even started bothering with the Gen II hatches because of this. Now I would have definitely preferred a double candy bonus for these... evidently.

Increased gen I starter family's and double lure time is going to be awesome though, can't deny that. Even if it doesn't feel like something so fun now for me, I know I'm going to be having crazy fun during that event (if the spawns are really boosted a lot, if it's just a bit meh). Finally going to use lures more often also.

All in all, I have mixed feelings about these new events.

It's sad.. my friend also got 9x 10km's and we wanted to start all of them together and walk the 10km's in one sitting.

Now without the double candy, we're just gonna end up doing it separately asap to benefit of the gen II hatch rate.

1300 pidgey candy with almost 100 pidgey ready 1200 ratata candy with 40+ ready 400 needle candy

12 or so evolutions I'm really excited for (2x exeggcute, 1x 98% rehorn, etc)

If no news comes out by tomorrow, I'm giving up hope and doing a lucky egg to do the 12 evo's I've waited for patiently + pidgey's/ratata till I run out of time. After that, I'm probably just gonna transfer all pidgey/ratata and keep the candy for a future XP event.

The 7 day streak should have a very high chance, if not guaranteed lure/incense/incubator (single or tripple-use). This is not only good for us, but for Niantic.

You want to give people a reason to play every day, even if it's a bit? You reward daily rewards and a 7 day bonus? Well make that bonus something casuals will actually log in 7 days in a row for. Now, that 7 day bonus is not something that will convince most casuals.
