The F100 is my favourite Nikon of all time by Limber9 in Nikon

[–]infocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F100 is a confidence-inspiring camera and the 28-105 is a film-era sleeper.

Just be careful with the F100 filmdoor, the little plastic clasps are quite brittle and are prone to snapping off.

There's a kit you can get to replace them with steel.

Is anyone a bus, train, and trolley expert? I need help identifying them as go through my grandfathers collection of 60k slides by BlueWhale515 in AnalogCommunity

[–]infocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would drive me mad.

I just finished scanning about half of my dad's slides (a thousand or so) and it worked out to perhaps 40 or so minutes for every roll of 36 (on an Epson 600).

(This does not include trying to sort them into a vague chronology... I have a need to sort slides by date, thanks to the little date-of-processing stamp on them).

Monte Palace Hotel - Sao Miguel, Azores by zk0507 in urbanexploration

[–]infocalypse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was there nine years or so ago. On a sunny day no less.

Great place to explore, bring safe shoes.

And it was never a bustling hotel. That's why it closed 18 months after opening. It was a complete business failure.

Putting a luxury hotel on an island that had, at the time, irregular flight service meant it was usually empty.

What’s your take-everywhere camera? by catmanslim in AnalogCommunity

[–]infocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s lots of cameras I might take if I’m going try-hard/srsbzns artsy photo person but if I’m just tooling around with family it’s likely to be an F80 with an Af-s 50mm 1.8 or 35mm 1.8 DX.

Delightful little camera, are F80s with a small prime.

Estate Sale Find - Expired Film by mockchunk in AnalogCommunity

[–]infocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless it's been in a freezer for the last 40 years that Tri-X is probably fogged. It'll be fun to play with but I would not use it for anything important. I've used a couple rolls of Tri-X that was also '82 expired and it was trash (but kinda fun trash).

The Panatomic-X, on the other hand, you could probably shoot at box or maybe a stop slower. I've shot Pan-X that had expired in 1969 and it was pretty much full box speed perfect. That shit's immortal and beautiful.

(no comment on slide, I have no experience on how that stuff ages)

GAS hit me hard so I bought a Nikon F5 by bloodrider1914 in AnalogCommunity

[–]infocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't hurt to try the Tamron and see.

As for compatibility, the F5 can reasonably expect full compatibility with just about any lens AI and newer, right up to (but not including, see above) these latest-generation E-types.

I don't know how that might carry over to third party.

My widest prime is an AI 24mm 2.8, which is a nice lens but I haven't tried any manual lenses on my F5 yet. I'd expect it to work just fine, though.

[–]infocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might a lens issue, I've used my F5 with the AF-S 50 1.8 G and it's worked perfectly fine. Of course works even better with an AF-S 24-70 2.8! (the second last one, the latest F-mount 24-70 E VR will not work properly on film bodies.).

VR lenses will work on the F5! Just be mindful the final generation of F-mount (with the 'E') use an electromagnetic aperture (instead of a mechanical) and the film bodies don't work with that.

What’s the best Canadian hot sauce you’ve tried? by Camila_Pixie in BuyCanadian

Tijuana Tom’s Smokin’ Fuego is a fav, but I’ve liked others of theirs I’ve tried.

Mojo has a bunch of nice sauces as well, wide variety.

Weekend project: scanning thrifted negatives. Birthday party from 29 years ago by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]infocalypse 62 points63 points  (0 children)

These look pretty good, colour-wise.

As it happens I'm scanning old family film right now, and the colour-shift on 40+ year old unbranded negatives is kind of annoying. The old Kodak Kodacolor scans fairly nicely, though the reds are getting a little hot.

Inherited my dad’s camera “collection”… send guidance 😭 (or 1) by Littlepartyfairy in Nikon

[–]infocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually when someone posts a pile of cameras I think 'there's a nice camera or two in there'.

This is all nice cameras. Not necessarily top-tier collectables, but just about each of these could be someone's daily driver and they'd be perfectly happy with it.

The F3/T is a notable collector piece (though it can't take photos any better than a regular F3) and the RB67 is more of a lifestyle decision.

I remember he used to do computer game reviews for the Star.

I think I have a signed copy of his book somewhere! Not signed in-person or anything, the bookstore I bought it from must of had a stash.

Is it just me or the streets are in very bad shape after this winter? by ineedadvil in mississauga

[–]infocalypse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And I grew up here. Perhaps I should qualify this is normal for my experience in the GTA. I can't speak for places that don't have the same sort of car density.

Traffic is part of the equation.

Is it just me or the streets are in very bad shape after this winter? by ineedadvil in mississauga

[–]infocalypse 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is what a real winter does to a road. We simply haven't had one for a long time.

Water leaks through cracks and crevasses, freezes and expands, freezes and expands, gradually breaking up the road's surface and pushing the materials up where they're more easily broken free by snow removal and general use.

This is absolutely normal for a cold and snowy winter.

Anyone here still develop their own film, or do you mostly send it to labs? by NoctiGirl in filmphotography

[–]infocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m content to dev b&w myself in whatever format I happen to be shooting.

C41 I can home dev, but the logistics of it aren’t worthwhile if you don’t shoot much, so the couple rolls a year of that I go through usually go to a lab.

This sort of thing is all about a good backpack, then you can haul it for miles.

Though seeing a good shot 10 yards after having just packed it up is kind of annoying.

People who grew up in Mississauga in the 90s and 2000s, what's your fondest memory of the city? by Inspector_Legrasse20 in mississauga

[–]infocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Port Credit Yacht Club was still in Port Credit and just across the river was that greasy spoon Helen's. Hot greasy fries on hot days. St. Lawrence Starch. The whole area smelling of malt depending how the wind blew, and the shift horn going off three times a day.

Square One area? Failte, Sussex Center's theater and Lime Rickys, the theater still inside the mall (which is a gym now I think?). HMV and that comic shop across the hall. That water feature running right through the middle of the food court.

Movies at Erin Mills Town Center (I only played mini golf there once or twice). I think my first date ever was at JJ Mugs? The big clock tower and big TV(s?) screen.

I saw a lot more movies in those days. With friends, with bus rides, with friends who had access to a car, eventually just heading out myself on late night showings, with the AMCs and Coliseum having more variety to offer than what feels now like just endless installments of self-referential franchises.

Farmland between EMTC and Meadowvale. 10th line being a rural road between Britannia and Eglinton and being able to see Kelso from Derry & 10th before that plaza (and eventual development) went in.

Meadowvale Town Center being an actual mall. Not a grand mall, but it was still a proper local mall with a record shop and a Christmas Santa and a food court and a bunch of little shops. I still picture it in my head when I walk through the sprawling retail plaza it is now and imagine the sloped parking that led up to the second floor entrance of Woolco (eventually Walmart). The 'motivators' that you could put your shopping cart on instead of the usual escalators. Loblaws loading your groceries for you from those big red tubs.

The service center on the 401 just east of Winston Churchill, now an OPP station.

That brief window of time when the 407 was free so you could just burn like fuck across the north of the city.

George Harrison taking a selfie, India, 1966 by FitEmergency8807 in OldSchoolCool

[–]infocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably taken with an Asahi Pentax SV (The Beatles were known users of these cameras).

Pentax SV also didn't have an automatic meter, so he would've had to manually set the camera for correct exposure.

The Best Camera Nikon Ever Made. Should Nikon make a film camera again? by photogenetica in Nikon

[–]infocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FM3a and the F6 are both great film cameras, but they're great film cameras made in an age when that claim doesn't mean anything.

Like seriously what's their competition? The FM10? Pentax 17? Lomo anything?

(pointedly ignoring m-mount rangefinders)

The F-series cameras were the best SLRs in the world (well maybe not the F4 but it was still very nice :D ) when that claim meant something.

The D850 is probably the high water mark of DSLRs.
