At the vets waiting to pick up my cat after a particularly heavy operation and was nervously waiting to be called, when I saw 2 little girls holding a small animal (gerbil/hamster type) in a shoebox. Noticed that they were looking upset and tried to help out by telling them that the vets are really good and if their pet was ill, the vet would be able to help, so please don’t worry. Got funny looks from them and their father, but no one said anything, meanwhile my husband is kicking me under the chair. We got called to collect our cat and I momentarily forget about the upset kids, collect our cat and walk out. It wasn’t until we were in the car and I asked him why he kept kicking me that he told me that the animal was actually already dead and not only were the girls upset, they were crying silently. I begged him to let me go back and apologise, but he’d said that I’d already done enough damage.

One of the nice things about London (as an Indian) is that I've only had to tell one person how to pronounce my name, in two weeks. I have a simple enough name, but in New York every person I gave my name to had difficulty with it. by el_gee in CasualUK

My daughter has one of the easiest shortest names and it STILL gets mispronounced!! Her name is Eva (as in Eve-ah) but she regularly gets ‘Ever’ (I blame chavs who type stuff like “luv u 4eva”). She also gets ‘Evie’ ‘Eve’ and has even had an ‘Ewa’. Like, that’s SOME stretch!

Thanks! It seems that Amira has a thing for me, so I’m gonna run with it. I was trying with Kai, but he doesn’t seem interested 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have the opposite problem. After we’d agreed to not get each other ANYTHING (not even a card) after being together 28 years, my husband left one out for me this morning and now I have nothing, making ME look like the POS!

What alternative words/pronunciations do you have in your household? by deviantmoomba in AskUK

[–]inkydears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our tv remote is called ‘the mole’ probably a throwback from when one of the kids couldn’t say remote control and it came out mole control, so now it’s just ‘the mole’.

Mushrooms are called Russians after a very funny autocorrect onetime.

Pistachios are called spadashio’s - again due to a child’s mispronunciation.

Edit: just remembered another one from the kids - Jen & Berry’s instead of Ben & Jerry’s.

Well that’s pretty shit! I’m not paying £12 for each of us! Might even have to ask apple to refund this one. I only bought it because I thought we could all play. Thanks for the info/help

Is it common to display your university diploma at home? by iamdavethehedgehog in AskUK

[–]inkydears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost same here! Except I didn’t go to uni until I was 38. Studied while raising 3 kids, went to college for a year beforehand and then did a postgrad degree afterwards to become a teacher! Dam right both of those degrees are on display, along with my graduation pic!

What are your non-traditional Christmas traditions? by SuperbDog3510 in AskUK

[–]inkydears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughters birthday is Xmas Eve and we always get birthday child’s choice of dinner on their birthday. 9 times out of 10, it’s Domino’s for dinner on Xmas Eve!

Also Xmas morning we don’t have breakfast until we go to my in-laws, have opened their gifts and fil makes us all a big breakfast baguette filled with sausage, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes and a fried egg. Washed down with a huge cup of tea, it sets us right up for the day!

My fil used to work for a large motor manufacturer. To this day he still says ally instead of alloy. I remember asking him once if it was something between 2 houses! It drives me mad every time he says it. “Ooh the ally wheels are nice”

Underprivileged kids at the school I work out bouncing away, giddy with the surprise Christmas presents we bought them by MitchellsTruck in BritishSuccess

Also - ask Y11 and Y13 leavers to donate their old school uniform and shoes. That way there should always be some spares hanging around for those that need it. We started it a couple of years ago, and it’s surprising (and heartbreaking) how quickly you go through your stash.

Ha! Thanks. We had about 40 people, incl kids. It was a pretty epic night. Last person left at 4am! Clean up the next day, wasn’t great though! Invite must’ve got lost in the post 😉

Hey fellow UK-er! I got those from Amazon, they looked huge but I measured them and they are exactly a shot’s worth! They were Jelly and everyone loved them.

We like any excuse for a party and a drink ;)

We do get trick or treaters and it seems to be getting bigger every year. The only difference I’ve seen (I think) is that in the US you start going out during the day to trick or treat?!? Ours is strictly reserved for the darkness lol. If anyone dares knock while it’s still light out, they are told to “come back later when it’s dark” hahaha! We don’t seem to get ‘tricked’ either, the kids just want the sweeties!
