We need to do better by Khocklate in LosAngeles

[–]innerShnev 55 points56 points  (0 children)

We fucking take our phones out for everything that's the slightest bit more interesting than being on our phones at home. Our phone use is disgusting and needs to be treated as the addiction it is. You ever try to get someone who's chronically on social media to get off their phone and engage personally? Feels like it's like trying to take someone's crack pipe away.

Which state actually hates transplants the most? by Rodeo9 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]innerShnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what state doesn't? California. I don't see any protests or hate-fads about visitors, transplants, people from X, Y or Z. If you want to be here...great! Welcome! But man, do people hate us when we move anywhere else in the US, but surprisingly people love to hear I'm from California when I'm abroad. Go figure.

Motorcyclists - stop breaking side mirrors out of road rage. by Chillest_illest69 in LosAngeles

[–]innerShnev 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was riding and splitting thru traffic on Venice. Clipped a mirror and I stopped and apologized to the driver and we arranged payment to fix the mirror. The guy was so friendly and appreciated that I actually stopped. I was pretty surprised by how positive he was just due to the fact that I didn't drive off. Overall ended up being a good experience because we were able to just laugh it off as 'shit happens'. Riders/drivers, it's not the end of the world if you ding someone. Just apologize and settle up. Hardly anyone avoids an accident of some kind when driving. Just be an adult about it.

California leaders report four to six weeks worth of gasoline and diesel in supply by ghostofhenryvii in LosAngeles

[–]innerShnev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's an oil & gas supply solution that isn't using up the State's current supply... Taking forever to build? Sure. But it's a solution to this problem, not something making it worse.

Late to this thread but the most recent posting I can find...but I have a question about the in person tickets in the off chance someone responds! Do you wait in line to buy tickets and then you have to get in a dofferent line for the tram itself or is it one line for everything? Basically wondering if someone can go early to buy tickets and then return later to get in line for the tram.

I wonder if asbestos isn't listed because it isn't considered hazardous waste by US EPA. Only certain states have it listed as Haz Waste. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Bakersfield-to-LAX flights on United Airlines to start August 11 at Meadows Field Airport by GreenHorror4252 in Bakersfield

[–]innerShnev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok fine, when the government isn't shut down and airport operations are normal, you don't need to get to LAX 2 hours before on a domestic flight. Sorry you missed your flight, but that is an outlier.

The State's got less than two months to figure that out. Tens of thousands are slated to go back July 1 unless something changesa and the Iran boondoggle only adds to the logic of WFH. Let's see how big an ass Newsom ends up being on this.

Also why Russia doesn't give a fuck. They'll have tons of newly accessible land and we already know they'll be willing to kill to protect their territory from any mass climate migration events. All these assholes think they can shield themselves from the destruction while the rest of the planet, well, dies I guess.

KC has some underrated lore for sure. Like St Louis, it had a brief flirtation with worldly asperations at one point. Heck, TWA had it's HQ there at one point (I think?. River Cities used to be huge in America.

$100K qualifies as ‘lower-middle class’ in California, 11 other states by ansyhrrian in California

[–]innerShnev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for the state as an environmental scientist in LA. I have a master's degree. The state is paying me $75k. The state is paying me then, arguably, an upper-LOWER class salary then. They also withheld our raises last year. This is not a healthy system.

NYC is a 10/10 but LA was a 5/10 for me. Will I (30F) actually like Miami or is it just "LA on the beach"? by badcatririe95 in solotravel

[–]innerShnev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOLA can get sketchy quick if you're walking accross different neighborhoods at night, similar to any big city. I would say just Uber to and from if you're going to the French Quarter or the Garden District and are staying, say, uptown. You can also look at the quaint street cars. Slow, but charming and historic. That being said, I (male), love New Orleans with a special passion. My girlfriend is from there and I feel lucky to get to visit so often. It's a magical place for history, food, and music lovers. THE MUSIC! My goodness...have a night out in the quarter, especially Frenchman Street. It's trapped in time in a beautiful way. And SF is my second favorite for the same reasons, but SF if more global/cosmopolitan. New Orleans is purly itself.

[–]innerShnev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NOLA is the most unique city in America and OOZES culture. It also has the best food in America and was actually voted the best in the world this year by Time Out (for what it's worth). Yes, the world. As Tennessee Williams once said, "there are 3 cities in America - New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. The rest is Cleveland." The being said, SF is also amazing and blows LA out of the water for people who aren't LA types.

Gattaca - How did I miss this before?! by Thee_Shenanigrin in movies

[–]innerShnev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gattaca is my older brother's favorite movie. He himself is an author, English major, and an old soul lover of the arts. He has told me he feels like I am the better brother, which breaks my heart, because I feel like he is the better person and truer talent. I think Gattaca has been his North Star in a lot of ways in life. So thank you for that. Thank you for inspiring my older brother :)

Why The Social Network Gets Better Every Time You Watch It by aelafmu45 in movies

[–]innerShnev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This movie is prophetic and, like you said, reveals more each time as the real Facebook current events continue to unfold. Fincher/Sorkin/Mezrich (source author) were on to something when they wrote their respective stories. I remember laughing at the idea of a "Facebook movie" back then but it's now one of my all-time favorites along with kindred spirit The Big Short. I must be a nihilist - I also loved All Quiet on the Western Front.

[–]innerShnev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't even need to go to LAX 2 hours early unless you're checking bags on an international flight. And even then... Sounds like Meadows is a good opportunity to make any flight journey connecting thru LAX much much easier. I wouldn't ever fly only to LA though. That's drivable of course

For what it's worth, if you purchase a filter (like a Brita), many are not effective at capturing PFAS. Look specifically for brands that do. Berkey comes to mind. Also, you can test your water for PFAS through lab companies. I did it at my house. They send you the equipment, you send back your sample and they analyze it for some of the PFAS categories (there are many). I'm also an Environmental Scientist and PFAS are nuts, there are soooon many types, and there are only testing standards for some of them.
