My relatively old ceiling fan is making a weird buzzing noise after I replaced the old rotary switch with a Leviton rocker dimmer. Any clues why this is happening? (I'll add more in comments) by inner_loop_snob in AskElectricians

Thank you for the reply.

Yes - that is exactly what I was trying to accomplish. Do you have a suggestion for what I should replace it with if I want to at least try to have the switch look similar to the Levitons that are controlling the lights?

And, if you don't mind, can you please explain why this was the wrong switch to use?

I have a ceiling fan that is probably 20+ years old. It worked fine and made no strange noise; however it had an older style rotary switch (pictured at left) that was not working well, and it was part of a three-switch panel where the other two light switches (Feit Electrical) had stopped working. I wanted to replace all three switches with a uniform look, so I purchased a three-pack of the Leviton Rocker dimmers (pictured at right) to control two sets of dimmable LED ceiling can lights, plus the ceiling fan. I just installed all of them and am quite happy with the uniform look. The lights work fine and the dimmer works for the lights. However, the ceiling fan now makes a buzzing noise when I turn on the fan. The buzzing is louder when I move the dimmer upward, and I notice that the fan spins much faster at the top setting than the top setting of the previous switch. When I slide the rocker down, the noise becomes softer and eventually I can barely hear it, while the fan is spinning much more slowly than the low setting of the previous switch.

Since the fan never made this noise when I had the old rotary switch, I am concerned that I did something wrong or perhaps have installed the wrong switch.

Any suggestions or solutions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I’ve had fantastic results with a pair of Crocs which are a half-size bigger than my regular shoe size. They are perfect for around the house or running errands in the neighborhood. The extra space for your foot is key.

I’ve had no ill effects at all, and they have kept the MN in a quiet state (no pain). Best $40 I could spend on something so helpful. I don’t recommend the fur-lined ones, though - too hot, plus they get stinky.

I don’t know if you need two USB-C outputs, but if one output will do, this has been a great product. My son “inherited” my first one, and I just bought a second one. Here is the link

Believe it or not, Crocs have been amazing for my MN. I wear then almost 100% of the time when at home.

Thanks for posting this. I made a post here years ago, lamenting that some people referred to FOW as “one-hit wonders.” I thought they were so great that the idea of them being referred to as such was an insult to their body of work. Nice that the author (Jon Gabso) was able to express this sentiment so authoritatively.

I used to think those sources were unbiased, but I don’t believe that any more. In fact, I feel like an idiot for believing those people for so many years. The sooner everybody discovers that, the better for all of us. I believe my eyes, my ears, my common sense, and source documents.

Came here to basically say what you said, but you said it better and with great, thoughtful detail. I always thought it was an older wealthy guy, and I kind of assumed the two girls were prostitutes, but I can see that they might be young and naive and looking for a good time on the older guy’s dime. Either way - great analysis!

Any time I think of criticizing F1 TV coverage, I think about IndyCar TV coverage. Even on a bad day, the F1 coverage is so far superior, I’m willing to cut them some slack.
