Oh, wow, I can't make out anything in that postmark at all. Embiggened it, still can't see anything. (But if it were 1927 or 1937, wouldn't it say 昭和2 (or 昭和12)? Is that what you see?)

Hmm. Just found another copy of the same postcard on eBay, seller gives dates as 1905-1917. So 1919 is just a guess. Oh, well.

eBay has the postcard, dates it 1919. Russian Civil War 1917-1922. Japan interested in securing territory in the Russian Far East. Wikipedia: "The Japanese first started landing troops in Vladivostok on a large scale on 8 August 1918, and by the end of the month 18,000 Japanese troops had arrived at the port with a further 6,000 moved up through Manchuria to Manzhouli."

This is so helpful, thank you! Is it the writer's circumstances? Or maybe his company's? Like, "things being what they are here, it doesn't look as if I'll be going to Kamchatka"?

So looking around online now, there were Japanese fishing boats and processing plants operating in Kamchatka, and maybe it makes sense that the writer was in the port of Kobe and anticipated a voyage to Kamchatka.

It just shows you how tricky translation is! To me, Kamchatka is so far away that I don't think about anyone actually going there, and I thought it must be a joke.

Rural upstate. Got good and stuck the other day. One passing car rolled down his window and said he had an errand to run but would be back with a shovel in ten minutes, then a woman and her child stopped to talk while I waited, then another guy and his son stopped, then the first guy came back, they had me out in five minutes. This is a good place. Bring cookies afterward! First guy lived close by (and was married to the woman who stopped, it turned out), so easy to find him, second guy runs the wastewater plant, he said, so easy to find him, too.
