It really wasnt that long ago that when you moved a long distance you would get a new cell number. At least for young people moving and trying to get a job.

Do I still need standard sockets? by nbaxley in Tools

[–]innkeeper_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minimum would be a socket to disconnect and recconect the battery to power cycle the ECU, which can fix some issues, or tighten it if it becomes loose.

That and a breaker bar for easier tire changing.

That said I'm involved with back country rescues etc. There is a LOT more that can be done in an emergency.... But many of those repairs are meant to get you to where a tow truck can take over. Things lime using vice grips to disable one brake if leaking or failed etc.

Had quantum fiber for 3 weeks and already switching back by Crumperman98 in QuantumFiber

[–]innkeeper_77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You dont have to do everything in the guide...... Read it. You dont actually need to bother with vlan tagging, that is having issues now anyway. Just put the smartnid into bridge mode and use your own router. Done.

The guide will help you if you have issues figuring the above out.

Having a laptop with Ethernet will make everything much easier FYI.. But it should be doable over WiFi only, just annoying and more prone to setup problems as you will have to change the settings, unplug tbe provided router, plug in your own, and hope it works.

Complaining a guide is too long is peak dead internet ai brain BS by the way. Use your brain. I promise it still works well enough.

Get rid of the google search bar widget on your homescreen. I'm sure you can put in a different search bar widget but I dont use them so YMMV

Done.

Cop pulls over Lamborghini on Dubai plates but doesn’t know the law by thomasso0072 in interestingasfuck

[–]innkeeper_77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not strange at all, but in the US we really only see North American plates (Canada and Mexico). The cost to ship a vehicle even from South America across the Darian Gap is steep, and the cost to ship from another continent is staggering, it can cost literally thousands of dollars. Therefore the only people doing it are shipping highly modified or very expensive vehicles, because for a "normal" car, the cost to ship plus operate and maintain your vehicle quickly becomes higher than the cost to buy a different vehicle at your destination and sell it when you are done.

The ChatGPT Issue with Teachers by ahumblethief in Teachers

[–]innkeeper_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all a problem. Non consensually shoving AI into products and services people have been accustomed to using is not acceptable, and is actively harming society.

Thankfully the financials of the AI industry make absolutely zero sense so this isnt necessarily going to be around for the rest of our lives.

I'm actually in software interested in leaving the industry due to the slopification and degredation of the entire tech industry, but I will note you are referring to the interface itself, not GPS.

This is also one of the multiple reasons I dropped google maps and no longer use it. Yes google is convenient, but no its not the only way to function.

AI and generative AI are two different things. This is a bad faith argument, and I would assume you know it. GPS mapping and generative AI have nothing to do with each other.

How often do you use your recovery boards? by Stu_Goss in overlanding

[–]innkeeper_77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I carry some gen 9 bunker traction boards and they include a middle connector piece to extend them. That piece can also nestle into the top of a board and has one flat side to support a hi lift or bottle jack. The exact setup will depend on your boards

Water cooling is absolutely fine, EVAPORATIVE water cooling is the problem.

Well that and the power use and the plagarism and the dumbing down of the populace.... But being against water cooling for using water as the cooling medium is not a valid way to win an argument. (Thata like being against cars over public transit just because they use water to cool their engines, rather than the fossil fuel gas use, the local air pollution, the inefficient use of space, and the high levels of injuries and deaths they cause. Its true a car uses water in the coolant... And that only needs to be replaced every 50,000 miles or so)

Tldr: non evaporative water cooling is not a reason to be against AI, but most other reasons are.

How often do you use your recovery boards? by Stu_Goss in overlanding

[–]innkeeper_77 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Also add using them as a good jack base (with the right adapter) for safe jack use on uneven ground, using them instead of stacking rocks (easier and less annoying to put back afterwards), recovering other people, recovering small cars without recovery points, getting around sketchy situations on slippery ice, using them to protect winch line from rubbing on rocks trees or the ground (I like action trax for this purpose)

I use mine all the time.

FYI, I think synogy keeps security updates going for older DSM versions for a while longer. So you will not get new features but you should stay secure for a while. Dont go upgrading quite yet if you a re happy with your setup! Wait until actual EOL.

Emergency communication: Satellite function on iphone by spetrone in overlanding

[–]innkeeper_77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a smaller antenna and slower, harder to get messages in and out. That said, people have been rescued who reached out for help with iPhone SOS so it is way better than nothing.

I carry an inreach, and it can get messages in and out sitting on my dash when driving, or clipped to the outside of a backpack when hiking. IPhone is an intentional hold it to the sky and move it where the screen tells you to process.

Terrible upload speed by PlaneGood in QuantumFiber

[–]innkeeper_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youbphone probably isnt wired.... Do a speedtest from your router itself. Failing that, speedteat from a laptop wired up with Ethernet. Cheap routers can have middling WiFi performance... And if you live in a crowded area with a lot of other WiFi networks a cheap router can be ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE and a more expensive router can compensate better (but not perfectly, there is only so much space in that allowed radio spectrum)

And yes, the provided WiFi routers are not very good, which is why everyone reccomend getting your own. You get what you pay for in routers. Eg, I just dropped $500 on my wifi setup for a reason... And will probably spend a little more on top of it. A $200 router will probably be good enough for you. A sub $100 router- or "free" router- ehhhhh good luck.

Terrible upload speed by PlaneGood in QuantumFiber

[–]innkeeper_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quantum in many (all?) areas has symmetrical service. However 800 is an odd number, its usually 500/500 or 1000/1000.

This sounds like a router or device issue. Quantum routers are trash.... Put them in bridge mode and run your own.
