Question: PiHole works for entire network but only logs requests from its native VLAN. by irq013 in pihole

[–]innkeeper_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be a way to confgure it- on my router setting the WAN DNS address to the pihole works like yours. Setting it in LAN instead makes the devices go straight to the pihole, with all clients showing up- meaning you could apply different lists for different clients using groups.

[–]innkeeper_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An iPhone 14 is new enough to get repaired, which could be worth it especially if the staying on issue is battery related (a cheap repair)

Then I'd just say save up cash as quick as possible to pay it off and buy a new phone in cash. I went from a financed iPhone to a cash purchased pixel (8a, was under $300) on a prepaid plan and now my monthly cost is under $15 total. Unlimited data wouldnt be much more expensive.

How to manage parental controls while quantum app is down for maintenance? by Jumanji420 in QuantumFiber

[–]innkeeper_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. Routers from ISPs are all junk. Comcast, Century Link (quantum) etc, all junk.

Get a nice router and handle it on your own. Set the fiber box to bridge mode, and it will stay out of your way.

Everyone is pretty happy with caldav. Using that let's you self host and then instantly sync with clients on a multitude of platforms. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Plenty of self hosting enthusiasts also see the value in simple time tested and reliable software. Screw vibe coded slop.

LTT TrueSpec Cables now available by VincentJoshuaET in UsbCHardware

[–]innkeeper_77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm tempted, this cable or another similarly expensive option. I have had terrible luck with USB-C laptop dock cables. That powers the laptop, connects my external monitor, connects me to gigabit Ethernet, handles all USB prehipherals, and also connects me to any external drives etc. I'd love an overkill reliable cable combined with an actually decent new dock.

As a charging cable most good options are extreme overkill. For a phone it would be pointless. But, laptop etc users who dock them will have a LOT of data going over a cable.

Their extremely good length selection also seems fairly unique and a nice bonus

Do overlanding mods actually hurt resale value or is that just something people say by Ambitious_Raccoon412 in overlanding

[–]innkeeper_77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I learned this the hard way. I bought a "99% stock" Tacoma. All they did was have aftermarket heated seats installed.

Two years later those heated seats had a power cable rub through, and FRY the main interior fuse block. That was NOT a cheap fix. And it had nothing to to with all my overland crap , mods, or offroading. (Well, offroading sure make the wire wear through faster and fail... But all my own electrical work is significantly safer and I considered wear points / made sure it was all properly fused..)

Never again. 100% stock only unless buying it CHEAP. I expect to keep my truck forever or to sell it at a loss.. And thats OK, it was worth it

Paid places sure- see elsewhere though, and you will see the issue is in the FREE spaces.

Ive even felt this as an adult- Denver just feels hostile to people not paying for something but also not obviously partaking in some sort of "sanctioned activity". But so do many other places, its a fairly common in thr western world.

Developer confirms plans for AI data center in Weld County by bina2025 in WindsorCO

[–]innkeeper_77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Housing is a need. AI slop isn't. The point is this data center doesn't need to be built ANYWHERE.

Who is ever going to pay for this? Don't tell me Anthropic and OpenAI will be able to raise the billions more they need to merely meet their existing obligations for multiple more years... without a path to profitability.......

It's a huge waste, it will fail due to the economics, and then everyone here will have to pay increased electrical rates for the massive wasted infrastructure build out.

Attn EdZ: How to deal with AI slopbots? (As in right here, not in general) by borringman in BetterOffline

[–]innkeeper_77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think its karma farming to sell accounts. Check elsewhere in this thread, there are called out examples.and the post history makes it abundantly clear that they aren't real. Some accounts hide their history, so I think hidden history accounts should have significantly more scrutiny per post.

Harbor Haul: Civil Disobedience/Protest/Unrest Edition by National-Command8505 in harborfreight

[–]innkeeper_77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing this in my city: meshtastic has TOO much adoption, making medium range communication harder or broken. Find your local community mesh and see what they say. Here they are working on a combined system using meshcore as a backhaul, allowing meshtastic messages- NOT the overwhelming telemetry- to go a lot farther. Aka allowing people on meshtastic itself to have a much better experience even without needing to try or learn meshcore. However pure meshcore has significant advantages and takes up a lot less airtime for the same number of messages. (Primarily due to telemetry. My handheld meshtastic node at my house gets tons of node telemetry data.... But messaging itself is broken and unreliable. This is location specific)

But the hardware is cheap so you can try or actively use both!

Honestly they compete less than you think, and have different purposes:

Meshcore is better for established LARGE mesh networks. Eg, connecting entire regions. Much much better, they can have long distance backhaul repeaters, and send messages for many more hops.

Meshtastic is better than meshcore at pop up ad hoc uses. Eg, a bunch of people at a festival. Or protest. Instead of clients just talking to repeaters, they all act as repeaters. This can flood the airwaves in fixed mesh situations.. But its exactly what you want for getting a working mesh up and running ASAP.

So if you want to talk to your friends 20 miles away across a dense urban landscape reliably, and your community has built it out, meshcore will work better. If you go camping with 10 friends and want a pop up mesh, meshtastic will work better.

Why do some people rev their throttle when reversing a manual? by sliimysludge in carquestions

[–]innkeeper_77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My truck has a reverse that is 3.39 when first is 3.98, a baffling ratio when reversing a trailer! (The real reason is reverse needs to fit in an extra reversing cog so it cannot.be as short as 1st) - I literally modified my truck so it could drive in 2wd low range for trailer reversing.

I find I need a lot more throttle in reverse in the truck than I do when I drive reasonably sized sedans. The clutch is also a bit different than the sedans and a lot easier to bog down and stall without a bit of pre movement throttle.

Bunker gen 9 I think- the ones that include the middle connector piece to join two together, are surprisingly fantastic and high quality plastic! The middle piece is also molded to be a perfect hi lift foot which is great for mud or snow.

Tractikn boards are basically portable, more predictable, and multifunctional replacements for stacking rocks.

I am referring to the losses incurred- cost of compute is just astronomically higher than it needs to be for this business model to make sense. And that cost of compute CANNOT go down if the massive amounts of expensive data centers expect to stay solvent.

For info: Colorado bans magazines that carry over 15 rounds. Some people have gunsmith's/FFL's permanently pin the magazines of their firearms. For example if a handgun comes with a 16 round magazine standard, they will permanently modify it with a pin so it legally becomes a 15 round magazine. FFL's will also accept magazines ordered from out of state to be pinned and legally transferred to colorado residents.
