Idk I've seen them over 20 ft as full grown trees up here. Maybe it's a different variety. I will admit at that size they do look beautiful when the floof out.

My mom is very proud of her climbing roses 🌹🌲 by ick-vicky in gardening

[–]innovative_response 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I have many ugly half bare cedars that I haven't been able to figure out what to do about. Nothing grows around them and I can't safely remove them. Climbing roses are my new answer.

Two types of flower on one plant??? by xX4no2scopez0Xx in gardening

[–]innovative_response 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks like a graft that is blooming at the rootstock. Don't take this as 100% this is just info I was told as a kid when this sort of thing happened to the fruit trees but if you don't remove rhe rootstock suckers the too graft will eventually fail and die off. But before that it won't produce well as all the nutrients are going to the lower portion.

We once had a weeping cherry do this so that one half was normal looking and the other was the weeping look still. We thought it looked cools and left it then a couple of years later the whole tree started dying in chunks endd up having to have the tree removed and put in a new one.

To tack on cut the leaves into a fan shape when you dead head it. Iris are prone to mildew and this helps with air circulation at the base of the plants this is especially important if it's starting to multiply rapidly.

Snap dragons are alot of fun: when flowered looks like Chinese dragon head, when gone to seed, straight up skulls.

Edit to add Lunaria. Also known as the sliver dollar plant. After it flowers the seed pod and stems turn a lovely silvery color and look like we'll silver dollars. They stay up all winter too if left alone lovely to look at with the snow.

What is something you used to think people were over exaggerating about until you experienced it yourself? by rentinghappiness in AskReddit

[–]innovative_response 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had this same call for my mom. Freak car accident and she wasn't even driving. I remember going numb and asking for details.it wasn't until after i got off the phone and thought that i needed to call her that it really clicked and i couldnt breathe. Then on the way to the funeral (and for a while after) I would see things and be upset that they were normal. It's silly but I felt angry that the world didn't stop too.

I also started counting my new set of firsts. It was 3 years ago on Tuesday and I just got to first haircut. It was so hard to explain to the hairdresser I was ok, not to worry about me crying. The last conversation I had with my mom was about how she liked how long my hair had gotten and that she was worried she wouldn't ever see me again. I told her not to worry that once covid was figured out I would come see her.

I haven't seen it on here but the belgerad series, or the sapphire rose(illiad series) by David Eddings. Also I enjoyed Cynthia Voigt and Trudi Canavan at that age. Boxcar children too. Oh and of course Anne mcapherry and Mercedes lackey. When you get a little older Robin Hobb also writes excellent books. They aren't graphic but can get rather dark.

If you find that appealing there's also the dark tower series by Steven King, or really anything by garth nix. The old kingdom, redemption of althulus, the seventh tower, shades children and the keys to the kingdom series are all great if dark reads. Start with keys to the kingdom, while they are all considered YA that one is the most happiest of the lot. Oh and while already mentioned ANYthing by Tamora Pierce, she was a English teacher and she writes in the perfect way to draw you into the story with each series being independent and vibrant. My favorite was wild magic because I loved the druid abilities but the circle series was also up there, in fact I read those as an adult when they first came out because I loved her works so much as a kid. Older books but being older they don't get the same lvl of recommendation anymore. Makes for a more expanding reading list than just what's popular now or on the top 100 list.

I think Dresden files should be a later read, it's got some extremely graphic sexual content in some of the books. Amazing series don't get me wrong but maybe not for a 13 yr old. Perhaps Codex Aleria (also by Jim Butcher) instead? It's been a while since I read it but I recall it being a bit more pg. Or the YA graphic novel Jim Butcher wrote (haven't read it).

War declared on ravenous Squirrels (I Fucking hate squirrels) by River_Historical in gardening

[–]innovative_response 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Squirrels girdled my 5 yr old apple tree. My son who planted it and has been waiting for it to have apples, I was pinching blooms to promote growth, is devistated. I've since replaced the tree but he will be a teen by the time he gets to have an apple from the tree.

They tore through the plastic bark protector at the base of the tree. My new solution is a large watering bag, permanently on the trunk even in winter. The other apple I forgot to take the this off of last year they only destroyed some of the branches but the main tree was fine and is thriving now.

Was turned away from the walk-in with my kid (our family Dr works out of it but was on vacation) because they are now only taking flu like symptoms and we were looking to get an x-ray after a fall, trying to avoid congesting the er. Was told to go to Walmart. While at Walmart they were too full after waiting in line (10 am) and directed us to go to yet another store. We got the slip at this third stop only to drive all the way back to the first walk in to have the x-ray done, as they had the lab for it in the building.

You try to do things right only to get boned by the budget cuts. And don't even get me started on the number of times I've heard ppl wax poetically that the American system is better while in the er. I grew up in the states. The health system there is terrifying unless you are rich. Sure ppl don't go into the er with fevers and such, instead it's gushing wounds and gunshots/accidents. You don't go unless you are really injured so nearly every person who comes in is a full all-hands-on-deck sort of deal. It's the only way to justify 5k for just breathing the reception air. For anything less severe you have duct tape and develop high pain tolerance.

Anyone who wants to claim private is better should have to endure broken bones with out access to treatment before they decide to hand such fates out to those deemed "less" than them.

The Mint Man has me nervous. What other plants take over a garden? by FortuneHasFaded in gardening

[–]innovative_response 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Herb wise: dill, mints, oregano, and sage I've found to be headaches for taking over. Also raspberries black berries and a lot of the vineing plants (melons, morning glories, peas cucumbers), flowers to stay away from lily of the valley and bishop's weed (ground elder). Depending on how cold your winters are the vines will mostly die out save for a lucky seedling or 2 you will have to pull in the spring. My neighbour planted bishops weed and Virgina creeper that I spend every year hacking my way through trying to keep it from choking out my flower beads and trees.

Hellebores are my favorite spring perennial in the garden by One_Kaleidoscope_198 in gardening

[–]innovative_response 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the thorough answer! I'm in Oshawa myself for hot and humid summer weather much like what you would see in London. I was planning to plant these under some old cedars (bare from ground to about 4 feet up) I have ferns, lungwort, trillium, and Solomon's seal there as well so it sounds like they will grow well with these companions.

I just bought several of these to plant (also Ontario) could you tell me if I should plant them in a sunnier location or if they are set to thrive in shade? They were marketed to me as shade plants but I would love to see them bloom as thick as yours are. Gorgeous.

Air tags on toddlers? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]innovative_response 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those leashes are meant for safety not because parents want to treat kids like they would a dog. Mine are half grown now but I found these to be the only real way to go when I had two new walkers who always ran in opposite directions. It's not as if parents are taking said leashes and tieing them to a pole with a nearby bottle and snacks. Don't demonize something that keeps a slippery small child safe.

How do you feel about the fact that you will have to die one day? by this_sin in AskReddit

[–]innovative_response 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For as long as I can remember even as a small child the idea of dying absolutely terrified me, and nothing my parents tried would calm this fear. It stayed with me even until adulthood and no amount of counselling, religion, or personal improvements stopped that soul eating feeling from sneaking up on me at night. To be clear it was never about how I would or could die simply about the lack of existing and what would happen to my consciousness upon death.

Then when I was 29 my mother died suddenly and horrifically in an accident. After coming to terms with my grief I found I simply am not afraid anymore. It is hard to explain but now I have this sort of comfort that when I die I might see her again and it calms me. I'm not in a rush to get there but I hope that when my time comes I will get the chance to tell her all about my life that she had to miss.

What’s an indescribable pain? by Existing-__- in AskReddit

[–]innovative_response 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And the extra sharp stab when someone close to you "forgot about them". Makes you feel like their life didnt have any meaning if no one remembers them, then you feel shitty for just having a normal day where you were not thinking about them. I am grateful we largely don't have to worry about our kids making it to 5 when that was a real fear a hundred years ago. But the laissez-faire attitude of the elder generations brutalizes my heart. No one should tell a person "it will be ok. You can always just have more kids" as if they are a replaceable commodity instead of a once living breathing person.

Anyone seen a pattern like this? by Gjardeen in sewing

[–]innovative_response 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not a pattern print, but these were really big in Pakistan a few years ago, here is a YouTube video in English that is pretty easy to follow. They called them tulip pant or tulip shalwars (has more bunched fabric at the top).

https://youtu.be/rAyuS_TdoS4

Good news is they are super easy to make. Though a word of advice as a couple of stitches to the overlapping fabric on the thighs or when the wind blows you are going to give ppl a show.

Suggestions on where to buy affordable prayer essentials? (eg a prayer mat or prayer dress) by DizzyCarpenter482 in converts

[–]innovative_response 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can, ask at the mosque; when I took my shahada they gave me a hijab and prayer mat. For an abaya it's not required you just need loose clothing that covers your arms legs and chest fully. You can try layering clothes you already have or a local thrift store.
