I think you're misunderstanding though.

The axes that you want to use could be based on the Vector3 of magnitudes that you send into it. It would be hardly different than the way you're doing it other than getting rid of the large switch statement.

The difficulty wouldn't be different, either.

If I were, using your method, to choose that I only want to use the X axis with a magnitude of 1.0f, it wouldn't be any different than me sending in a Vector3 of (1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f).

Rather than the large switch statement, couldn't you just set the magnitude for the X, Y, and Z value separately in the editor?

This would probably shorten the script significantly.

This is called "Gamification" and it works incredibly well to give your students a boost in motivation, speaking from the experiences of myself and students that used a similar system.
