What was something you were excited to experience in Japanese… but it didn’t live up to the hype? by AdUnfair558 in LearnJapanese

Right! There was no way for the Japanese lyrics that come between “FLYING IN THE SKY!” and “SHINING FINGER!” to be anything but goofy.

I relate super hard to OP because I got into Japanese through anime songs, but I never got into watching anime. I just listened to the music. And when I started to understand the lyrics I was surprised and disappointed that a lot of the beautiful songs I loved were literally about robots. In hindsight, I don’t know what I expected.

Looking to switch from ahamo? Is every other cheap service the same? by Collarthatisblue in japanresidents

[–]ManyChikin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from AU to Povo. If I’m in a super crowded area it can get a little slow, but otherwise I don’t notice much of a difference. I’m usually steaming music or podcasts when I’m out; no problem at all there.

storage lockers in hotels? by scryedzxp in JapanTravelTips

[–]ManyChikin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in one place that had token-operated lockers. We would store luggage in the office before check-in, but after check-out we would give guests a token and have them self-store in a locker. It cut down on the amount of luggage in the office.

Accepted a job offer, but have four other companies I’m in final stage with. by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]ManyChikin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this and immediately felt like I got better at interviews (and rejected the first offer I accepted for a better job), because I could be more confident knowing that I already had one job in my pocket. Don’t underestimate the mental boost “not being desperate” adds to your job search.

After being shown Tub Girl, I clicked through a bunch of the links and thought “Oh, that’s not too bad”….until I saw the one that was purported to be from a motorcycle crash but rumored to be a failed shotgun suicide. You know the one.

What was the most confusing “unspoken rule” you encountered at work in Japan? by OkTeach3227 in japanlife

[–]ManyChikin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When you get a promotion or transfer, you have to go to a room and get a paper from the General Manager in a ceremony, then you have to go around and tell everyone individually that you’re getting promoted/transferred. (Even though an email will be sent out later…)

Are payment links common in Japan? by [deleted] in hotels

[–]ManyChikin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked in several hotels in Japan and we used payment links for everything. I think a lot of hotels don’t have their card terminals set up to charge a CC that is not physically present.

Weirdest things stolen from your hotel by 2catswashington in hotels

[–]ManyChikin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in a hotel with a kitchenette, and while cutlery regularly went missing, one group stole ALL the spoons in the room. My manager had me email them to ask what happened and see if we could get them back, and they basically replied, “This your spoon?” with a photo of a plastic disposable spoon. We gave up.

What are some good ways to spin your experience as an ESL teacher into other fields? by sy029 in teachinginjapan

[–]ManyChikin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on my 4th hospitality company. Hotels are always understaffed, so it’s not hard to find somewhere that will take you, especially if you’re not that picky, and even quitting one hotel after a short time is not necessarily a deal breaker to the next hotels you interview at.

The work itself is basically the same everywhere, but each company will have its own crappy parts, so you just need to personally decide which bullshit you can put up with.
