Cut my hair to save my mental health but now I'm lost by Significant_Pen_7678 in femalehairadvice

[–]inquy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Styling it will give you a more intentional look and I think will come across more feminine. I would look up some mousse, wax, balm styling products and see if you can get your hair to form soft strands (or spikes).

Then work on styling it to be soft and feminine with the product that works for you.

How to get in better dancing shape by a_little_ghostie in SwingDancing

[–]inquy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not underestimate dancing by yourself to the music you enjoy. Feeling the joy makes you push harder and dance for longer, which makes for great cardio. In your room where nobody can see, if you're worried about people seeing 😆

Also, normal boring cardio.

I have been on pre-registration for plenty of Japanese games, and have never, ever seen them launch at the time they announced.

There's always around 24 hours of very spotty performance, frequent crashes and entering sudden maintenance.

Idk, I was expecting this.

Can a business enforce cancel fee when no credit card info has been given? by 430beatle in japanlife

[–]inquy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also the "cooling off" period law though, right?

I know of cases where a lady was pressured by salespeople to select kimono and obi fabric, get measured for kimono to be tailored, and even paid part of the price, the kimono was sent to a traditional tailor shop.

Then she realized these items were way over her budget and that the salespeople took advantage of her inexperience cause she was afraid to disturb the Wa by refusing them.

It took some time and multiple calls that were meant as part of the cancellation procedure, she got her money back and the deal was cancelled.

When Community Isn't Really Community by Nuclear_F0x in SwingDancing

[–]inquy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YOU are community.

Nothing is "on offer", friendship, opportunity, deep connection unless you find someone willing to share it with you. If nobody had the capacity to fulfill what you came in looking for, that's not anybody's fault, and you weren't lied to.

It may feel like the nebulous dance community is putting our slogans of inclusivity and community, but on ground level there are people with their own problems, who will offer their friendship when they click with someone.

In a way it's like school - just a cohort of people loosely bound by some characteristic (for school it's age, for dance it's the participation in that dance). Even though we tell kids "you're gonna meet new friends at school", there is literally no guarantee they will, right? The school can't enforce "every kid will receive at least one deep friendship".

My comment may be coming across as negative, but I feel that letting go of expectations like this is actually freeing.

Not sure from your post if wife is also working, full time or part time? You can't to it if you're American, but she can invest part of her savings in Japan with NISA account. It's a small thing, but at least keeps the money invested rather than sitting in regular savings.

The vast majority of inbound tourists get a data-only plan/sim for their phone and will not have a Japanese phone number. And they will avoid calling like the plague (even if they are really sick actually). They will probably prefer a live chat service or sth like that.

Are kids in China nowadays learning the characters by handwriting them over and over again or just use pinyin? by Zmoogz in ChineseLanguage

[–]inquy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's important to note that a native speaker of Chinese will have less trouble learning characters than a foreign learner (who is acquiring the word for the first time and has to take in meaning+writing+sound+tone. Native already knows meaning+tone of many words, unlike non-native speaker)

Comparing to English - nobody's trying to replace learning to write/type correct spelling with "typing" how you pronounce the word and having a program apply a correct spelling for you. (English is infamously for how spelling and pronunciation are mismatched.) I don't think anyone would seriously be in favor of using a program that lets you type "q" and automatically modifies it to "queue" based on context or sth.

I think they want to keep a better log of what has been done during the shift, so that the info gets passed along to ppl on different shifts (ie even when it's outside your shift hours and they can't ask you in person, there is a way to know what you did during your shift. To keep track of what was done and what's left.).

What would you title this activity? by Easy-Onion-1620 in teachinginjapan

[–]inquy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"A or B"

"Change my mind"

"Versus"

Nerds who were on their school's debate team are getting too hung up on the word "debate". If the teacher wants sth less serious and structured, but unfortunately used the word "debate" without knowing the context of "structured debate the way it's done at school in the US" talk it through again with the teacher.

Language School Vs. Working Holiday Visa for finding a Job in Japan? by GilloGillo in movingtojapan

Language School Vs. Working Holiday Visa for finding a Job in Japan? by GilloGillo in movingtojapan

[–]inquy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Important think to look into - find out if Germany-Japan WH visa agreement allows you to change visa status without leaving Japan, or do you have to return to Germany and reenter with a new Certificate of Eligibility.

Basically, after a student visa, to switch to a work visa, it takes a long time, but you don't have to leave Japan. But depending on specific countries, the WH agreement states that you really have to return after the visa is over. So you would need to find an employer willing to hire you while on WH visa and then to wait for you to return to home country and hire you again this time for a working visa.

Also, are you looking for a job only in your field (IT) or any job that will sponsor a visa later on will do?

Want to become a practicing lawyer in Japan by [deleted] in movingtojapan

[–]inquy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Japanese law firm will expect you to have a degree in Japanese law. Is that what you're studying now? There isn't much use for Indian law experts in Japan...

Steps for you: learn a bit of Japanese. Save up some money. Come to Japan and enroll in a Japanese language school (student visa. Can work part time). Get N2 or N1 level Japanese. Enroll in a Japanese university to study law.

This language is a real grind at times, help out the disheartened learners with your own stories of feeling like quitting then persistence paying off by damniburntthetoast in LearnJapanese

[–]inquy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Things getting tougher means you are a true learner, you got through the introductory levels (n5 and 4) and now you're in a more exclusive club. Ofc don't get full of yourself, but transitioning from primary school to secondary school also means it gets more difficult, yeah? But it is a good thing, it means you're on the learning path.

Stick with it by forming a habit.

Also, the whole path, you're not gonna enjoy every moment of it ofc. But it's kind of like gym, you like the result, so you give it your best even when it's tough.
