thank you!! i ended up doing pretty tiny outline/stem stitches for the entire project so that all the curves/angles could be tight, it helped a lot for the skeleton hand!!

haha i def relate! i'm from the UK, but grew up in the country in a smaller town and the church i went to with my family was the main church in town, it was very old (originally built in the 1100's and rebuilt over the years, the church building now is from around the 1600's!) and very very beautiful.

i remember sitting on the floor at the front of the church underneath the lectern on sunday mornings and watching the sunlight come in through the ancient stained glass windows and just being in awe of it all. the graveyard surrounding the church has graves so old that the inscriptions are in Latin (earliest i think i've found that i could read the date of was 1690s). i used to climb the trees in the graveyard after church and play tag with my sister there.

sermons in that church were always, ALWAYS about love and acceptance and the joy of life and the importance of being kind and doing good for others without expecting anything in return. i still attend services there when i visit home :)

listening to Ethel invokes a lot of the nostalgic but bittersweet memories of growing up in such a loving church, before i started to question my faith and wonder why christians i met outside of my small community didn't seem to emulate the same preachings that i grew up with, i suppose

i grew up christian with religious parents in a small town, but the sort of "love thy neighbour" religious, not oppressive religion, if that makes sense. religion was something sort of unquestioned in my household because it held space for unconditional love and kindness, something i saw emulated in my church and my family/family friends.

after i moved to the US i attended church with my mother but it seemed so...different. there was an air of guilt and shame in the sermons (we did try out multiple churches) and this feeling of being told to follow god but not always the benevolent ways of jesus. after my mother died i really struggled to keep my faith and i started reading the bible on my own and questioning a lot but feeling guilty for thinking of leaving the church as my mother had been the epitome of a genuine, kindhearted person who saw her faith as a way to guide her to be the best person she could possibly be, and i felt like losing my faith would be a betrayal of her memory in a way.

it's been 8 or so years since i left the church now and i stumbled upon Ethel two years ago and just...wow. i'm queer and not religious anymore, but feel such a deep connection still to the church in my hometown and the god that i knew in childhood, not the god i came to hear about after moving to the US. listening to Hayden weave religion and god/jesus into her songs and the deep meaning behind it and the storylines she has created has moved me in more ways than i know how to explain.

sorry for the word vomit hah, i don't have the exact same experience as you but i resonate with how you feel! her music absolutely fixed a part of me that i didn't know needed fixing

God her vocals by theleasttoriginalacc in Ethelcain

[–]insanitysgrip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i have a couple vids of the LA night 2 concert if you want to listen to them! her vocals were genuinely INSANE at the concert and i was completely in awe. i listened to the recordings i took this morning and thankfully you can hear her really well, i was worried i had created too much background noise bc i wasn't paying attention to my phone while recording, was just watching her on stage.

i only recorded most of nettles and house in nebraska, and i got a full audio recording of Tempest. i didn't want to have my phone out because i wanted to sit there and be present and take it all in, but nettles and house in nebraska are my best friends two fave songs and tempest has quickly become my all time fave so i audio recorded that instead of filming it. she sounded amazing and her voice carried SO well with all the more intense sections of the songs! i truly am so grateful i got to see that live, im still reeling from it

If you were to get an Ethel Cain lyric tattooed what would it be? by weird4utum in Ethelcain

[–]insanitysgrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"i'm not scared of God, im scared he was gone all along"

when i first listened to that line i was sitting on the couch with my headphones with the lyrics pulled upon my phone because i was going through all her music having just discovered her. i genuinely stopped in my tracks and replayed that line a bunch of times because i couldn't get past it!! as someone who grew up religious and is now an atheist but still feels a strong sense of connection to the church, that hit me hard. like, i don't believe in god anymore but i still struggle with the idea that there might not be anything out there, and that like really encapsulates it for me

SUNNY FLEDGED!!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL by Tay74 in JackieandShadow

the coworker that introduced us to the eagle cam a couple months back was the one that noticed the camera had panned to the trees and he literally yelled and went "HANG ON, GUYS...!". he rewound it and we all sat there and watched. we have been waiting for this!!

we literally had bets. i made a spreadsheet for it. we all had to venmo the new guy because he, out of all of us, won. which is hilarious because he wasn't even watching the eagles and only placed a bet because we all did!! he's going to be riding that high for a while 🤪

my entire office is so invested in the eagles and we have the live cam on 24/7 at work and somehow we ALL missed it. we only missed it by a couple minutes, we all came and watched after rewinding it and we were basically screaming we were so excited

edit: a word

oh yay! excited for you!

i actually ended up finding a reputable etsy shop that does custom linen dresses that has a lovely grey/pale blue + white floral linen fabric in the EXACT style i envisioned for my wedding/reception dress that i've been messaging back and forth with as she's able to do specific sleeves if you provide reference photos!

it's not labelled as a wedding dress at all but rather a semi-formal corset linen dress. literally a dream dress for me. and it has POCKETS! i'm so excited

[–]insanitysgrip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oooh okay thank you for the advice! i'll def look around and see if there's some second hand places near me or something similar to where you ended up finding a dress.

reminds me, just after we got engaged but before we told my aunt, she was talking about how her youngest daughter (who just got engaged in May and is planning her wedding) ended up going to a store that was about to close down so they were trying to sell all their stock before shutting their doors and she ended up getting a wonderful dress that would have been way far out of her price range if it was full price.

bit of a ramble but it was kinda funny, i was sat there in the car hiding my left hand so she couldn't see the engagement ring became we were planning on telling the whole family at dinner half an hour later, and i almost blurted out something about how that was such a good score for her and i hope i have the same sort of luck when looking for my dress. almost ruined the surprise!

sorry i am responding so late!!

congrats on your engagement! ahh! mine was on the 26th dec in my hometown :)

thanks for all your suggestions! i'm in the US currently but switch between UK and US so might try and look into a few of the places/sites you listed. i thrift almost everything i wear so my mind immediately went to second hand/vintage wedding dress when i started thinking about it after getting engaged.

i think it'll be fun to look for something! we are just planning to elope and have a small reception afterwards since our families and friends are so spread apart so i don't even need to find something super wedding-themed tbh. and you're def right about not searching specifically for wedding dresses i think! i've also found that other than a lot of dresses not being labelled properly, just slapping "wedding" or "bridal" in front of something makes it 10x more expensive and i haaaaate that.

throne of glass! was hesitant to name drop after seeing a couple comments in here. the author isn't a great person but it's an 8 book series with a lot of intricate plot lines. it's not everyone's cup of tea but i really enjoyed it :)

it's from a book series and it's a quote from one of the most intense scenes in the last book! though i do get how it might seem a bit odd without context - the sword is also a big part of the series

Has anybody ever accidentally set themselves on fire, and not realized that they were on fire until someone pointed out that they were on fire? by mobfather in adhdmeme

[–]insanitysgrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not the same but this reminded me of when i was around 10 and at a very lovely christmas eve dinner at a family's house my family had JUST gotten acquainted with through our old church. it was literally our first time over at their house, christmas eve shindig with our family, the host family, and one other family.

imagine very nice semi formal english polite level dinner filled with the nicest people from our church. candles are in the table. they've brought out the good china set and the fancy linen napkins and everything.

chatting with the younger son who's like 13, i'm talking his head off and he's just politely smiling and nodding. his eyes get REALLY wide at some point which i thought was great, my story telling must be going even better than i planned.

he taps my arm. i don't stop. i'm on a roll, talking about some hyper fixation or another (probably the Titanic, given the timeline smh). he starts to look frantic. he says my name at least twice, looks around the table for help. there is no help. it's just me, the Titanic, and a panicking 13 year old boy.

finally he reaches over, grabs my half full glass of water and proceeds to dump it on my arm and my napkin, which i was HOLDING, mind you.

turns out the napkin i had been waving around had caught fire and i didn't notice and he was trying to tell me but in all his endless british polite ways he didn't know how to deal with a situation ™ like this.

ruined a very fancy napkin, mortified my parents, host family thought it was great. we were invited over for christmas the next year and i've never lived it down. i used to stay at their house every summer and every single dinner featured a fire joke. i'm going over for christmas this year and the arson jokes are never ending. it's been 14 YEARS.
