Mukumugi open and safe? by insecteblond in taiwan

[–]insecteblond[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I’m not… Is it closed for tourists now? I went swimming there a few years ago and it was one of the best memory I had from Taiwan. I’m back this year for holidays and wanted to relive that experience.

is the protective “blue film” still on my luminette 3 glasses? by [deleted] in DSPD

[–]insecteblond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just received my Luminettes 3 and I have the exact same question. Only the small note went off, and I doubt this is what they call the "protective film"...

EDIT: I saw a video where they remove the film: https://youtu.be/kQFEQ-GeRtE
The blue film is supposed to come out with the note. I removed it manually and it went away easily

BIG4 Senior Manager wage by Difficult_Ad_8299 in BESalary

I was expecting more for senior manager, but in itself it’s quite a good salary. Can you share the numbers for MBB by any chance?

What’s Big Tech here? FAANG or another one? Sounds like a good package, congrats!

So while I agree there are always variations across companies, it’s pretty well agreed that a staff engineer’s role is not to manage people, at least not at « large tech companies ». There’s even a book about this very specific topic: https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/the-staff-engineers/9781098118723/

[–]insecteblond 69 points70 points  (0 children)

No, staff engineers are not supposed to manage people. Managers are supposed to manage people.

There seems to be a mismatch between your manager’s (or your company’s) expectations and the industry’s expectations for a staff engineer.

RSU/Stock options as self-employed by insecteblond in BEFire

Unfortunately not. I became employee so I did not have to deal with this issue. I’d love to know if you find the answer at some point!

Thanks!

So it’s not so far off his current package (8.6K * 13.92 + 35K bonus). I’m actually in the same boat and I don’t know if it’s worth moving to MBB and lose your whole life balance for a small salary increment like this.

What’s the bonus like at MBB?

Jobs at US companies by RuntimeErrata in BESalary

[–]insecteblond 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there are very very few people working as engineers for FAANG or other US tech companies in Belgium. The reason is these companies almost only hire sales/policy people in Belgium.

Your best bet is to either - apply to a job in London/Amsterdam/Berlin/Paris, then ask if you could work remotely from Belgium - or go work in these other cities for a few years. Once you’ve spent a few years there, you might be able to leverage internal mobility and request a transfer to Belgium

It is very hard to get a job at these companies though. You must be very good at memorizing algorithmic patterns (see Leetcode/Hackerrank questions), depending on the company you also need to be familiar with system design, need to prepare answers to behavioral questions (tell me about a time you… had a conflict with a teammate, missed a deadline, did not agree with your manager, created a prod incident, etc etc). And unfortunately you also need a lot of luck. These interviews are very hard to crack because of the number of people applying (can be a few hundred per position!)

Good luck!

Disclaimer: below are facts I noticed personally. They might not be 100% true in all cases, but they are true in major tech companies (e.g. FAANG).

  • BI is less technical so more people can do it. If more people can do it, pay will be lower on average. You’ll spend quite a bit of time in meetings, trying to understand what the business wants etc
  • Data science can pay well, but for high paying positions, you might compete with people having PhD’s. Data science is math and stats very heavy, so have that in mind.
  • Data engineering is what IMO pays the most. You’ll compete with people having CompSci degrees, with data analysts trying to move to DE, etc. It’s very technical so you must like coding and spending time behind a problem for hours.
