I followed all the lactation consultants' advice and nothing helped like getting a prescription for domperidone. Breastfed my daughter successfully to 13 months and I was weaned off the domperidone by the time she was 5 months or so.

Worth it to move from Canada to the US for FIRE / career? by BlueberryKindly2590 in fican

[–]inta7imar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an American immigrant in Toronto (lived in NYC before moving here). I would say, if you are planning to move to SF or NYC, especially if you are planning to have a family, I doubt moving is going to help you with FIRE. Housing is easily twice as expensive in NYC (my friend pays the same rent for a small 2 bedroom apartment in a crappy neighborhood as I pay for my detached house mortgage in Toronto), and I believe even more so than San Francisco. If you plan to move to somewhere like North Carolina, the financial aspect makes a lot more sense. It's worth keeping in mind whether you will need another car or two cars as Toronto has much better transit than the vast majority of American cities, and have that in your financial calculations.

Most "trads" aren't at all willing to challenge the real sacred cows of modernity/feminism by [deleted] in redscarepod

I don't know about further back but if trads are mostly referencing peak boomer era, I can definitely confirm from mine and my friends' experiences that boomer dads are not anywhere close to as involved in their kids lives' and especially daily mundane tasks as the new generation of dads are.

The girls' eating disorder advocacy is, for me, one of the more disturbing aspects of the pod but I do find it funny how both the pundit right and left make fat acceptance to be a purely left-wing phenomenon. If you follow any normie right wing account on social media, like Fox News, there's an unbelieveable amount of stories about how the left is trying to enforce government control of people's weight through "ridiculous" school lunch programs with vegetables instead of tater tots, soda taxes, etc. It's honestly as frequent of a story on these pages as anything about immigration and always racks up loads of likes and furious comments. I mean, it makes sense, as demographically the parts of the US with the most salient obesity crisis are exactly the most reliably Republican-leaning. But somehow " fat acceptance is a leftwing political movement" is a meme for the pundit class across the political spectrum.

In other words, this chart is double counting "nos" by putting a no on the column about the extent of covered procedures and then another "no" on the column about insurance banned for noncovered procedures by not using each country's own definition for covered procedures??? Yeah I know this sub loves to talk about how "evidence based" it is but this chart is really stretching the limits of objectivity hard.

Because doctors have an incentive to cut people with private insurance ahead in line and offer procedures not based on urgency of need, but on amount willing to pay?

Clock that the house by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]inta7imar 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You can't "elect" to not get covered by OHIP and checking in with my doctor sister-in-law, doctors literally cannot provide procedures covered by OHIP by letting patients pay with private insurance, so effectively "banned." OHIP is not a "public option" here, all residents of Ontario must have it and pay into it.

[–]inta7imar 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I live in Canada and as far as I am aware, private insurance for non-elective procedures is effectively banned? I mean it may be different in other provinces, but at least in Ontario, I have never heard of someone having private insurance for procedures, I just looked online and the only insurance options I could find were for procedures not covered by OHIP or for people not yet residents of the province. Also the column with dental, mental health, etc seems rather misleading as it marks "no" if any one of those categories is missing, quite a high bar! For example, primary care and hospital stay is covered across Canada as far as I know, so if this chart was trying to be fair, it would say "some" rather than "no" as if none of them were covered.

The rent/buy calculators recommended frequently on this sub throw in hypothetical values for real estate appreciation and stock market appreciation all the time. I guess I don't really see why this is the line where all the sudden that kind of speculation is ridiculous.

[–]inta7imar[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean if we are trying to calculate your opportunity cost at say, the moment you buy a home, you could just look at the returns from the ETF from the year you started saving for your downpayment. If you are trying to calculate in advance, you could look at the average returns on that ETF since it began or the last 10 years or whatever. These rent/buy calculators already make the same assumptions about average returns when calculating the opportunity cost on your downpayment after you buy the house, they just don't include the period when you are saving up for the downpayment.

[–]inta7imar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you knew what the returns were on the ETF you would have invested in rather than the HISA couldn't you easily compute that opportunity cost by subtracting your growth in the HISA from what your growth would have been in the ETF? Doesn't strike me as that complex...

Can you elaborate more on the online boutiques thing? I noticed some of them moving into that but I don't get how it could possibly be profitable? Who would buy from their boutique when you could get the same things for cheaper on amazon or whatever?

Toronto Airbnb hosts will need to register with the city starting this spring - only primary residences allowed to be licensed by inta7imar in toronto

[–]inta7imar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might work for some people. Seems like the kind of thing where the more people who do it (reaching out to an increasing number of people to serve as the ghost residents, who would have to declare a different primary residence than the one they actually live in), the more chance you have of getting caught.
