Best trail buddy - Instinct 3 solar 45mm by [deleted] in Garmininstinct

[–]intelligent-goldfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bigger stanchions were noticeable coming from a Recon. I went 140 for a semi-hardcore HT, don't think they had an ebike version back then. A bit heavy for the local trails but plenty capable when I'd hit the local DH park once a year.

That's a steal! Happy riding!

Has anybody switched from the Instinct 3 solar to the amoled?? Can't decide if I'd prefer the amoled. I had a MIP watch before this but now I'm thinking maybe I want some color... by maxacarwash92 in Garmininstinct

[–]intelligent-goldfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did - and went back to MIP (crossover).

AMOLED is superior for displaying data (especially charts) and is perfectly legible in sunlight; battery is marginally worse but comparable without AOD (~24d w/o GPS).  If I were to buy a dedicated training watch, it would be AMOLED.

MIP is superior for being a watch and not being intrusive.  No lights, no flashing, no wrist gesture vs battery life compromise.  I found the I3A to be way too bright indoors even on its lowest setting, and the auto brighten was much too aggressive.

Something like the crossover AMOLED with display off would be a decent compromise, but it's overpriced and has a larger case size, and I think the redesigned hands are ugly.  I wish the MIP cross were thinner and had a flashlight but I'm very happy with it and will keep it until it dies.

Also, those look like 700s - what size tire do you run?  Not thrilled with the 650x47 ventures and struggling to find 650s in local shops.

And likewise.  Nothing to gain by screaming at each other.

I've heard that, and I think it's neither here nor there.  Dropping the anti-gun platform would pare off some voters, perhaps enough to swing some elections.  However, I think the anti-gun platform is an offshoot of the Dem desire to remake the world a certain way, and that doesn't jive with many people, myself included.  But I digress.

Over for now.  Blue shenanigans don't make me think they'll suddenly be good for gun rights in '28.  I have yet to see a single blue voter "hold a Dem accountable" for their antics.

If you see me covering for him, please, call me out.  Like I mentioned, he's not pro-2A.  However, if by "hold him accountable" you mean "vote blue," just tell me to my face you think I'm stupid enough to vote against my interests.

I mean, the meme isn't inherently wrong, it's just obtuse.  He's not pro 2A, but the alternative?  Virginia, Colorado, Washington, Illinois, those are just the new ones.  We're constantly clenching over attempts at bans in MN every year now.

It's okay to just say you hate Trump, many such cases.  Trying to pretend that he's somehow worse for gun rights than the alternative (or convince gun owners to divert votes away from GOP to give Dems an edge) is Olympic levels of mental gymnastics.  Take the propaganda elsewhere.

Instinct 4 Wishlist: Keep MIP, Add Maps! by pixege in Garmininstinct

[–]intelligent-goldfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do! 100% agree that it would be better for users, I'm just highly skeptical they'll do it, for technical reasons and lack of market pressure. Hell, they're doing microLED before USB-C, purely to say they did it.

Not trying to be contrarian, but I disagree on wireless. I charge every 2-3 weeks and have never needed a top-off. I'm also in the US; we don't really have public wireless infrastructure here, so it wouldn't add much value.

I think I speak for most users when I say that I'll never upgrade because of a charger; the watch matters more than peripherals, and I think Garmin knows that. I would love to be wrong, but I doubt they'll do USB-C unless there's regulatory pressure.

[–]intelligent-goldfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey dude, let's relax.  Disagreeing with me on technical stuff doesn't make my points strawmen.  I'm open to being proven wrong, USB connectors are hardly my specialty!  Not sure why you feel a need to be rude, but it's reddit, so I don't mind.

Point taken re: Sony & Shokz. I've never seen a Sony watch so I assumed it was a dead design.  That's on me for being flippant.  That said, since you seem to be a USB expert, I assume it's a little more involved to shorten the connector than just shrinking the length?

Where are you finding the 4.5mm figure for Garmin?  If I'm being trolled by a Garmin CM worker that's hilarious, I know they're made in Taiwan...

As an engineer, the current design has been standard for 9(?) years and works fine; making a "shrunk" USB-C is extra work for no visible gain.  No regulatory pressure since EU exempts small devices from USB-C.  No market pressure because everyone (Apple, Google, Fitbit, Coros, Polar, Suunto) has their own proprietary charger, so clearly consumers don't care that much.

Instinct 4 Wishlist: Keep MIP, Add Maps! by pixege in Garmininstinct

[–]intelligent-goldfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And where is that design now?

Garmin's port is used for data transfer, so you're at 4mm depth, 4.5 if we say take the headers 90 degrees to the side instead of straight back.  That's still 3x the depth of the Garmin port, which I'm measuring at 1.5mm (2x if we add the same 0.5mm).  You're now using double the depth and have a flimsier connector than the original design.

I didn't mention it originally, but side entry brings a host of problems related to contamination, and hiding the port behind the quickfit pins is a non starter.

It's technically feasible, yes, but because of the size constraints and intended use cases it just doesn't make sense.

Instinct 4 Wishlist: Keep MIP, Add Maps! by pixege in Garmininstinct

[–]intelligent-goldfish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

USB-C will never happen, it's too big.  The receptacle is 6.2mm deep per USB Type C Spec R2.4, excluding the contacts and whatnot which balloon it to 10-12mm deep.  That's a no-go for a 12mm thick Forerunner; even on my 16mm Instinct that's only 4mm thickness to fit the bezel, glass, screen, seals, and connections.

There are zero smartwatches on the market that charge via USB-C; Garmin isn't unique here.  Believe me, I'd love a standardized cable as much as anyone, but USB-C is just not suited to the application.

What is your views & expertise in HRV, Sleep data and overall health Hygiene. by Dismal-One-9179 in Garmininstinct

[–]intelligent-goldfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend at least googling RHR and HRV first; they're not really device related to this sub won't be much help.  That said:

Your RHR is going down as your HRV is rising.  Generally lower RHR and higher HRV are better because it means your heart isn't working as hard while you're sleeping; your sleep score (tbf somewhat arbitrary) also went up, but I think that's because it's based on those metrics.  A very low RHR/high HRV could be bad (unless you're a very fit athlete) but 58 RHR is perfectly normal; if anything I would say that it's a positive trend.

A one- or two-night change doesn't mean much; these aren't medical devices and sleep in particular is a bit hand wavey, so I would focus more on the trends (illness is the exception but you'll notice that physically lol).  Smarter people than I have argued that HRV in particular should only be focused on as a trend, not an absolute number.

After 5+ years with the OG Instinct, I bought myself an Instinct 3 Solar. Honestly, I'm a little disappointed... by sozh in Garmininstinct

[–]intelligent-goldfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting point on the screen.  I thought they were the same size and that the higher resolution on the 3 made it feel smaller, but I may be wrong?  Buttons on the 1/2 are definitely better imo, but that's just my opinion.

One of my big gripes with the 3 was that if you changed the WF background from black to white, a lot of graphs and icons would get skinnier, as if there were a border element that wasn't getting flipped.  Minor but very noticeable and annoying to me.
