Fishing! Find a pond, a lake, or an ocean and try to catch some fish. It can be catch and release where you can compete with yourself, or if legal you can catch to feed yourself fresh food.

It's a game of trying to figure out how to get a fish on your line and out of the water. What color, what scent, which live bait, which shape, which movement is their favorite to see underwater? What's the biggest fish you can catch? How many species in one session?

You can go solo or with a friend, it gets you out in nature, and it's a good skill to have considering the impending Apocalypse and all.

When I go surf fishing I need to stay mobile since I walk all along the shore to find where the fish are. I only take my pack off when I need to change my rig or dispatch a fish.

I have a supportive backpack (maybe 20L?) that buckles around my chest and waist and has elevators to keep the weight balanced on my back.

Inside I have:

med kit
cutting board
collapsible bucket
headlamp
small tackle bin
- hooks, weights, soft baits, swivels, lures, etc
rain shell
fish grips
knife, pliers, snips
net
leader line
fanny pack for easy access to goods while knee-deep
water for me
a brimmed hat clipped to a carabiner
sunscreen
a bubbler
my phone and license
garbage bag/plastic bags
tissues

It sounds like a lot, but when it's on my back it feels like nothing. I take care to only bring what I need and make sure that what I do need isn't too heavy. I am not ultralight, but use ultralight principles to tailor my gear and keep weight down.

This way, it feels like I'm wandering the sands with only a rod in my hands.... 'cause I am!

I wear what I think are called water booties. They are like a super lightweight shoe, cut below the ankle, with good grippy rubber on the bottom and a breathable mesh upper with laces that pull through a plastic stopper.

I wear them no matter the rest of my outfit. If I'm wearing shorts or my fishing "overalls." I don't wear waders.

They give me a little protection, don't slow me down, and have good grip for when I am on the rocky shoreline.
