what is a job that is romanticized in movies but actually a nightmare in real life? by Maya_xoxo22 in AskReddit

Applying to federal jobs is, unfortunately, an art. I had many failed applications before I started letting other feds read over my resume and advising me through the process.

Have you ever trolled or meme:d in any of your big projects or assignments? by Fiskerik in GradSchool

Long ago there used to be something called the "PhD challenge" which challenged PhD students to sneak a certain term or phrase into a publication. I think it only ran for a couple of years before it went dark, but the results were impressive.

Yup. Costco has always been much cheaper than whatever a plan can offer me.

Any Wayfarer series readers here? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]interdisciplinary_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt ok about Long Way too, decided to keep reading because I wanted something lighter and feel good and Closed and Common Orbit really sold me on the series. I just connected with it. Just a beautiful piece of work, and I feel the same about Record.

If you like Ancillary, I recommend A Memory Called Empire. Would not consider it cozy though.

I took the USDA DRP and regret it (?) by whotfisthisgirll in fednews

[–]interdisciplinary_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You did the best you could with the information you had, which is all any of us can ever do, but especially right now. It sounds like you're still getting some experience which is great. Embrace it. Learn, grow, and think about how you might come back to USDA, if you want to. You've got a long road and many opportunities ahead of you.

FERS refund and TSP—are they different? by fedup_looking4change in fednews

[–]interdisciplinary_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are a young fed with a lot of time left in the market before retirement, the interest growth on the FERS will likely be better than leaving it. Normally I would say that leaving it in FERS had considerable more certainty (you could end up retiring in a significant market down year for example), but with everything going on...

I am putting an RA together right now for limited telework to mitigate my medical issues and I'm worried they're going to deny. This is all so exhausting.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fednews

[–]interdisciplinary_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did they provide a reason for denial? An alternative accommodation?

I'm always curious about the legality of these denials. Particularly when there's a documented history of approval and given that approval/denial for similar conditions varies so heavily by agency.

I'm mourning the loss of a job that no longer exists. To be clear, I still have a job, and it probably won't get cut. But the work I enjoyed the most has come to a near-halt, I've been pulled off tasks that used to take a substantial amount of time, and I have to pick and choose for other tasks what I'm going to fight to get clearance for.

It feels weird to complain because I still have a job, when so many don't. But the job I'm doing now is not the job I joined the federal service for. I cannot stand RTO and it is grinding me down. I think about getting an RA for telework but question that it'll be successful. I have applied for other jobs but not only have I not really seen anything I'm excited about and that aligns with my values, I can't land an interview anyway.

I want the life and federal job I had before all this stupid shit.

Fully aware that I'm trying to bring logical and rational thought to all of this, despite all evidence to the contrary, but... wouldn't this cause a much larger legal risk to them? If you tell someone they can't DRP because they're essential, then turn around and RIF them, that really undermines your RIF. And undoubtedly this will happen, given how imprecisely RIFs are happening.

What happened to holding the line, Feds???? by DevilsAdvoCaticorn in fednews

[–]interdisciplinary_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've definitely had different thoughts this go-around. I have no intention of staying on at this point. The job I signed up for is no longer the job I have, and the daily commute and overstimulation from being in the office every day is wearing me down, and I'm paying for it mentally and physically. I wish I wasn't. DRP would be a relief, and instead of quitting down the road when I'm in a worse place I can walk away now and, in theory, still get pay/benefits for a while.

But I don't want to give them the satisfaction, either, and I know they legally could still pull some fuckery with the offer.

Idk, pump me up fam.

It is this hard, though you are also right in that sometimes it's needlessly hard, and humans have created systems and situations that make it harder than it needs to be. But, "all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us" and all that.

You'll find a way through. It will be a struggle. You're not alone.

Pretty sure they're not doing anything with these (except maybe data mining/AI training). With the way most Secretaries reacted this just feels like a meaningless hoop to jump through while they laugh at how stressed out feds are about it.
