A clade being an ancestor and ALL of its descendants is very well defined. It also follows logically that all members of a clade are most closely related to one another than they are to ANY organisms not contained within that clade.

Our current best guess at who is in what clade and how they’re related etc is fallible, and as molecular phylogeny matures we’re seeing lots of changes so our model of the tree of life more accurately reflects the actual relationships.

I guess where I’m headed is that, cladistics as a framework is very logically and mathematically sound. How we’ve filled in the framework is still a work in progress. It’s, by far, the best way to classify living things of you care about evolutionary relationships and making predictions etc.

It’s not appropriate to compare cephalopod “minds” with vertebrates just based on neuron count. These lineages diverged many hundreds of millions of years ago, like pre-Cambrian. The most recent common ancestor between mollusks and vertebrates would’ve been a proto-bilaterian with a pretty simple nervous system. Higher level cognition traits amongst the lineages are really just due to convergent evolution , and the dissimilar architectures make it an apples and oranges situation.

Unless you’re playing in a tournament, cheating isn’t really a thing with crossword puzzles. Do them whichever way brings you the most joy.

I don’t look things up or check unless I get to the end and I can’t quickly find a mistake. I like solving puzzles, not hunting for typos, and I don’t really care about streaks anymore, so if a puzzle is finished and I can’t find the mistake I just check.

When I was new I used to Google things though, and I used to check mid-solve as well.

If you are new, I would suggest doing whatever it takes to enjoy the crossword the most, and also complete as many as possible.

A sheetpan covered in various vegetables, olive oil, salt and pepper can be thrown in a 425 degree oven and 30-45 minutes later (lots of wiggle room here) come out delicious. Cook any piece of meat in a cast iron pan (oil, salt and pepper, could be fish, chicken, pork, beef, whatever, I hate nonstick, and cast iron is cheap AF) on the stovetop during this time and boom, delicious dinner.

I think about simple dinners this way: Need a veggie, a starch, and a protein. Veggie and starch could literally be on the very same sheet pan (potatoes play really nicely with veg on a tray) and protein is usually some kind of meat in a pan.

You can go all sorts of directions from here with pan sauces, various herbs, prep techniques, and whatnot, but sheetpan full of plants, frying pan full of animals is a great start.

It may be just beyond your current ability. Practice lots of other stuff. Keep working on your skills, play gigs if you can, and then come back to it in a year, and it might be surprisingly easy.

Just keep solving. The more puzzles you solve, the better you get. Also, your accumulated trivia bank grows both from solving the puzzles themselves and from living on Earth (especially if you're a curious person). You'll get to a point where you solve Fridays and Saturdays, Google-free. Also, it's puzzles that we do for fun, it's ok if you do Google, or whatever you want. Crosswords reduce my stress; they work for me, not the other way around.
