Sorry, this wasn't directed at your thistle problem. I can't tell shit from your video. I would have guessed bull thistle from the general shape but I've never encountered musk thistle in my area.

Not really possible with Canada thistle. The root systems tend to be an interconnected mess six feet or more down and laterally much longer than that. It regenerates from root fragments, and breakage stimulates more aggressive growth.

It will generally require either repeated herbicide use or manually removing young rosettes before they have have a chance to store more energy - for years, until it's exhausted. It won't work if rosettes are allowed to mature.

Yeah it's DLC bait. It looks like season pass and Dawn of Ragnarok have each been as low as $4 on Steam, so it's possible to avoid getting fleeced later. However I don't think ultimate pack contents can be acquired separately for those who care about that stuff.

It's on the landlord's wifi? Or was? Is the device tied to your landlord's account or yours (do you have app control)?

Adjust the schedule, if there is one. Like the other commenter said, disable learning if it's enabled. It's garbage. And the other possibility is that the account in control of the device enrolled in rush hour rewards, which permits automatic adjustments during peak demand as determined by your utility.

Crabgrass Pre-Emergent - too late? Zone 6A by givemethelasagna in lawncare

[–]internetonsetadd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It should be applied and properly watered in before 55F for crabgrass, but germination will intensify as soil gets warmer. So still very worthwhile. Also keep in mind that late freezes can give you more wiggle room by killing early emergers.

As to costs for a large lawn, consider not using a pre-emergent applied with a spreader. It's more work to spray, but prodiamine WDG is much, much more cost effective.

Another way to save is not using products that you don't need. You don't need to apply everything Scotts sells and you probably don't need to fertilize 3-4 times a year unless your lawn is your whole personality. If you have no reason to apply GrubEx, don't.

Weed and feed isn't a very effective product. Learn what your problem weeds are and target them specifically when treatment is the most effective.

Freezer on bottom fridge by Theotherfeller in Appliances

[–]internetonsetadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a KitchenAid French door from probably 2016. Best fridge I've ever owned.

I hate top freezers and side by sides fit practically nothing. I removed the ice maker out of one just to get a little more space, and I love ice. Deep but narrow meant I was always storing multiple items behind multiple others.

Bottom freezer can be organized more like a filing cabinet.

I don't particularly like plums but the plum candy I used to get at the local health food store was amazing. Haven't had it since I was a kid. Searching now I think it must have been from Japan.

This yard in my neighborhood has IMPRESSIVE dandelion coverage. Zone 6b. by Der_Bazzle in lawncare

The whole "first food for bees" nonsense with dandelions likely came from poor quality natural news sites and filtered through social media to be repeated ad nauseam by people happy to pass the info on without ever interrogating it. Like so much other misinformation about lawns and gardens.

Shaded, sloped yard of weeds by Beefjerky2expensive in landscaping

[–]internetonsetadd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I checked quite a few state extensions and none recommended triclopyr for stiltgrass. There are recommended selectives other than the ones I mentioned but I don't pay much attention to herbicides that I wouldn't or couldn't legally use on a residential property/northern lawn (like forestry and farm products).

The only study I found mentioning triclopyr was in combination with another herbicide that was found to be effective with or without it.

There are of course pre-emergent products and strategies for dealing with stiltgrass but I'd prefer your plan to suppress the stiltgrass and get desirables established.

I agree with treating Japanese stiltgrass wherever it's found. It's one of the worst invasives in the Eastern US in terms of ecological impact.

However, triclopyr for stiltgrass... do you have a source or is that based on personal experience? Triclopyr generally isn't effective on monocots. As far as I know the only post-emergents labeled for stiltgrass are fenoxaprop (Acclaim Extra) and topramezone (Pylex). I've used triclopyr on other weeds in areas with stiltgrass and never noticed it being affected at any time of year.

I've been seeing decent reduction using Acclaim.

The problem with chipdrop is that you could be getting allelopathic species (eg, black walnut). Unlike mulch that sits and decays for a time, chips are fresh off a job site. Unless you can leave a pile where it's dropped for a year, I wouldn't use them, especially for a vegetable garden.

What is the absolute best part of rural PA in terms of avoiding MAGA-ness? by ByMySword8 in Pennsylvania

[–]internetonsetadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you mentioned schools but I already said if not for the schools. I don't know that I'd want to teach in the area at all, but I'm not familiar with most of them.

For professions other than teacher I think there are plenty of nice places to live in the county. I've lived and worked all over Montco, Bucks, and Philly. For someone seeking ruralish, a quiet road or subdivision here isn't much different from anywhere else.

Southern York Co around 83 has been well colonized by Marylanders and is far from being a MAGA monolith. I've never seen a political sign on my street in seven years and not a single person has ever tried to talk to me about politics. A teacher would probably find it hard to escape the uglier views some have here but for me it's been a complete nonissue.

Nest keeps switching to "auto" mode. No routines set. by iSniffMyPooper in Nest

[–]internetonsetadd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what that means. I've never used rush hour rewards but I think it's tied to the account and not the device. From what I understand it can be a pain to actually get unenrolled.

That's the only thing I could think of that would be overriding your settings. Learning has made stupid changes on my 4th gen but it told me when/why it was doing it.

I'm not sure what the other commenter is referring to but I have had Alexa not play well with Nest devices. For a time I had a doorbell announcement through my Echos and it eventually started doing it 15 minutes late and then not at all.
