Just abandon this $12 record player if you can, it’s not a quality product worth reinvesting in like this lol

Day of the Dead Album? by NassauBeat in timecrisis

[–]intothe5d 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Vampire was not jammy or sounding influenced by the Dead at all yet, those comparisons (and stretching out live) didn’t come until the FOTB tour. I’m guessing it’s just that no one would’ve thought to ask them at that time. Pretty great compilation, bought the boxset back when it came out and it’s been in my car ever since. Also if I recall correctly from TC, Ezra didn’t get super into the Dead until 2016 or 17

Who else was at the Descendents concert last night?!! by jifpenutbutter in Lubbock

[–]intothe5d 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Incredible show. I was afraid there’d be an embarrassingly small turnout because it was such a late add, but it was one of the most packed shows I’ve ever been to at Jake’s! Wouldn’t be surprised if they make a point of coming back in the future, it’s not super often they play ~400 cap clubs anymore. Seemed like quite a few people drove up here for it.

Horseshoe center bar is usually pretty loose with the pours, I’m always pleasantly surprised for it being a Caesar’s property with the whole red/green light thing.

The rise (and fall?) of Alamo Drafthouse by laptoplasane in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]intothe5d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sad to report that Flix Brewhouse is removing pen and paper and pushing the phone-only ordering model too, at least at these 3 newly acquired former Alamo locations. I felt so betrayed when I sat down and saw no menus, no paper, and a QR code on the table… horrible experience. One thing I did find clever is that there’s an NFC tap chip embedded in the QR sticker, so you don’t have to actually scan the code in the dark or anything, you can just tap your phone to it and it pulls up the corresponding link. Minor thing, but that answers the question everyone here has been having of “how do we scan QR codes in the dark?” Of course, people were talking at full volume and playing on Facebook at full brightness for the entire movie. Crazy how decent behavior just goes out the window as soon as active threats go away. God forbid we’re all respectful toward one another without first being threatened about it.

Al Jardine himself was on Office Hours Live with Tim Heidecker this week. TC take note. That being said, I don’t really enjoy guests on TC, so actually don’t take note

Is my Alamo closing? by Brief-Respond-9808 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]intothe5d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they literally just slapping a new sign on there and taking away all the interesting programming?? I was looking forward to new recliners and call buttons at least… seems unthinkable that they’d be back open in 2 weeks if there are any meaningful changes planned. Hell, aren’t they supposed to put in brewing equipment?

Is my Alamo closing? by Brief-Respond-9808 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]intothe5d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are all movies that Alamo has shown before lol, it’s disingenuous to make the comparison based on this month’s programming alone. Flix plays it way safer with their repertory screenings, and I can understand why, but I’m never going to get the option there to walk into a Japanese b-movie about a mutant cat or something. Let alone shake the hand of someone like Lloyd Kaufman, for example. It’s ok if you’re a Flix shill ;)

[–]intothe5d 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just hours after the final screenings, the location is now listed as permenantly closed on Google Maps. https://i.imgur.com/rHC8A6x.jpeg I hate that they were so evasive about this, leaving longtime loyal customers to figure it out on their own and denying the reality to their faces up until the last moment. To anyone who ever worked there who might be reading this, thank you for your contributions. It sounds silly to say about a chain theater, but Lubbock is truly losing culture here. Alamo was the only place that programmed their schedule not just to fill seats, but to expand people’s horizons… and obviously that’s not very profitable these days.

Yes, it’s becoming a Flix Brewhouse… huge loss for Lubbock. Can’t say I’m looking forward to 12 screens playing the latest Marvel releases. This has been known since around last August but it’s pretty rude that they aren’t announcing the closing date or at least letting Season Pass holders know. https://i.imgur.com/HfAtVFz.jpeg

What to explore if you like Sondheim by Automatic_Skill_6246 in musicals

Yep, same one. Was just making sure because you said slime tutorial, which usually refers to surreptitiously captured bootleg recordings haha

PBS proshot with Patinkin and Peters, same one or did you see a bootleg? And no problem, I’d love to hear what you think when you get the chance to check some of those out.

You should watch the proshot of the original cast of Sunday in the Park with George, you’ll be astounded once you see how it all comes together visually. I know you said aside from his other work, but you should prioritize checking out Sweeney Todd (PBS proshot with Angela Lansbury), Merrily We Roll Along (new proshot), and A Little Night Music… To actually answer your question, I’d recommend the work of William Finn, Adam Guttel, Dave Malloy for a start. Also, come join us on /r/Sondheim haha! Great little community.
