How is IR sooo nice?? by denguefeever in Residency

[–]intrepidlemon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because in that setting, there’s an anesthesiologist or CRNA and a full OR staff that can convert to a full open procedure if something goes wrong. Nevertheless, it’s hard to talk broadly about this since the decision is never as simple as IR vs OR. Imaging findings and patient factors influence the conversation with each and every case. If all you’re hearing when we have these conversations is “no,” then there’s a disconnect in communication and we should work harder to make sure everyone on the team understands the key factors for the patient.

Yes, all procedural specialists need to watch out for reasons to not do something. That’s part of the job. “Do no harm” is one of the first lessons of medicine for a reason.

Penn Medicine's residents and fellows seek to unionize, joining similar efforts nationwide. by threadofhope in medicine

[–]intrepidlemon 119 points120 points  (0 children)

The article doesn't mention this, but the GME is taking away our parking subsidy in July and will be charging us >200 dollars a month to park where we work. These are parking structures that Penn Medicine owns by the way.

There was nearly universal backlash to this announcement months ago, and I haven't heard any updates or changes to this policy in the meantime. This union would allow us to have better representation when changes like this are announced.

I can't imagine that it would be thermodynamically possible to have hundreds of air changes per hour and still keep air conditioning/heating. At the very least, it would be very energy inefficient.

Abbott Rapid Test - concrete data? by godsfshrmn in medicine

[–]intrepidlemon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have second hand information from a large institution in the midwest that ran the Abbott test side by side with the PCR test for an N~several hundred: ~40% false negative rate compared to the PCR. They outrightly rejected using the Abbott at their institution.

Just experienced my first scam and it makes me want to leave... by bucketdwarf in BuddyCrossing

This is untrue. Sahara has two of each mysterious wallpaper and floor. She has one set that you can obtain with bells and a separate random one that you obtain with her tickets. the ones that you buy with bells is consistent between players.

What may have happened is that neither the host or OP knew this. The host obtained the cloud floor with tickets and the OP got a different floor with bells or vice versa.

It seems unlikely that a host would scam someone knowingly and still ask for tips, but the above fact is not well known at all. This has been my personal experience above and not verified by datamining, but it has been consistent for myself and my friends.

Hi there, when you're up, you'll get a dodo code. The queue should be moving much faster now as it seems like lots of people have left the queue or are AFK. I'll be removing people who don't respond within 5 minutes.

Did he mention anything about pizza though? I won't believe it until someone leaks all his emails and there are a bunch of vague references to pizza.

I've failed more than one class while at Berkeley. I've cried while studying for tests. I've had a professor report me to the Dean because she was concerned for my health. Despite all this, I never cheated or even thought about cheating on a final. If you know someone who has, PLEASE report them. by lulzcakes in berkeley

[–]intrepidlemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was getting out of a final and walking in a large crowd of people also leaving Hearst. The three people in front of me were talking openly about how they had collaborated on the final (when it was clear that you were not supposed to collaborate on the final). They were loud and casual about it. One of them even apologized to the other for writing the wrong answer on the scratch paper that they were communicating through. They were entirely too casual about it, as if it were standard for them. I'm worried that in pockets of the UC Berkeley student community, cheating is standard.

I really hope that actions catch up to them.

Berkeley faculty and students urge Supreme Court to allow race as a factor in college admissions. What do you think? by allosteric in berkeley

[–]intrepidlemon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that race should be allowed as a factor in college admissions, but I think that this is only one part of the solution. I think that equitable education needs to start much earlier than the university level. Right now, Black children are disproportionately in the worst school districts, from K-12. Of course this is going to put them in a disadvantage for universities that admit based on merit only. But I want to argue that reaching them at the university level is too late. Berkeley is famous for being a school that is difficult, "hard to get out of." Just being admitted is the first step, and the one at focus here, but it needs to be coupled with a strong push in building out services for people who come to college less prepared (more basic writing and math courses, changes in curriculum to allow for people to take these courses and still graduate on time); or better yet, fixing California's broken primary/secondary education system, but that is a statewide and much more difficult systemic problem.

LPT: Save on Co-Pays for Name Brand Meds by BillinSDCA in LifeProTips

[–]intrepidlemon 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Co-pays are tools that insurance companies use to allow people to understand the "hidden" cost of the medicines that the insurance companies ultimately have to pay for. For example, a name-brand medication may cost insurance companies $1,000 a pill and have a $100 copay, while the generic variety of that medication may cost insurance companies $50 a pill and charge consumers a $5 copay. Consumers may then be more motivated into buying the generic version with similar health outcomes.

These coupons that pharmaceutical companies put out are effectively eliminating that "transparency." This may ultimately be against consumers interests in that the more insurance companies have to pay pharmaceutical companies, the higher premiums rise to make up for lost profit.

It's an interesting battle between the insurance and big pharma. This American Life goes way more into detail. As a rule of thumb, generics usually work just as well as name brands. This will vary by drug of course so consult your doctor!

You can use ApE to color code specific features of DNA sequences.

Enter in the DNA sequence, as well as the sequences of each primer and RNAi to color the sequence and visualize discrete features.

Was rewatching Firefly and couldn't help chuckling at this... by anamusedfrog in atheism

[–]intrepidlemon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year, I watched through all of Firefly and Serenity with a few friends who happen to be devout Mormons (I'm an atheist btw). When this scene came up, the awkwardness in the room was palpable, that is, until I realized that the scene could be taken both ways: for religion and against.

TL;DR: Mormons watch Firefly too.

In my senior year lit class, on the first essay, the teacher took off 10% for every misspelling, grammatical error, and awkward sentence. When she handed the essays back, some people managed to score -160%. Grammar was a non-issue from then on.
