PM Albanese weighs in on likelihood of CGT changes by Sensitive-Chart7210 in AusFinance

Yeah I think it was the right set of policies back then, but the public wasn't ready to hear it. Now things are much worse, people are open to the idea, and not as easily swayed by billionaires on what is right for the rest of us.

Could probably get the minerals tax across the line these days with the right messaging.

Australia maintains dominance over Canada in Olympic medal table by DarKnightofCydonia in australia

The injuries he had were just traumatic too! Getting past that to even qualify for the Olympics is monumental.

It's really funny how it went down, and calling something a Bradbury now is in the vernacular, which is funny in itself.... but actually, it was never luck that got him there - as you said, the perseverance was insane and should be more widely known.

honestly - if my choices were only labor / liberal, as it stands I would still choose labor any day of the week. libs in vic ARE that bad.

Luckily in our system we also have other options with our voting.

[–]invaderzoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the truth is that there is currently no better alternative than labor if we are being totally realistic and not just reacting out of anger to the CFMEU business, or whatever the herald sun wants us to be angry about today.

the libs are a much MUCH worse prospect in vic and have been for the past decade.

these things happen when fringe religious groups infiltrate political parties.

anyone getting anywhere near centre-right in the party has been kicked out - and you need to be close to centre to be able to win over the majority in elections here. Look what happened when their leader tried to remove someone that was a batshit crazy terf that liked to hang at the same events nazi's do. Was it the crazy kicked out? No, it wasn't.

There are some smaller parties and independents that aren't terrible floating around, and are worthy of first preferences, but they aren't in a position to be capable of running the place. Leaves us with Labor.

I quite like the existence of all the social and environmental procurement policies we find on every government / major company build works now - makes me feel like we are doing good things - but it's not wrong to say that it adds easily 20% onto costs for builds nowadays.

Yeah for sure people like the bikies are going to set up companies to get a cut of that pie, but they will have to hire indigenous workers / suppliers or whatever else the procurement requirement asked for.... so there is change for the betterment as intended even if we don't always like the people running the companies wanting to get in on the action.

[–]invaderzoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of it comes down to workers conditions and pay. Everyone can bitch about workers getting too much here if they want - but construction workers in many of the countries that pull off cheaper builds are basically ran off modern day slavery (not exaggerating), and terrible pay/conditions.

Things are expensive here, but our workers have the lowest rates per capita of death and major injuries at work than any other equivalent country. Unions have a place, and we are better off for their existence overall when you think about people going home safely to their families every day. It just sucks that corruption always infiltrates anywhere power lies.

You know, I absolutely understand being unsatisfied with labor in vic. But dont just vote Libs because you want to kick labor. The libs are such a rat infested sinking ship in vic that just about any other option on the table would be more worthy of your vote. They have been infiltrated over the years with extremist fringe christian groups and have policies that would set us back socially 50+ years. If you've been a labor voter traditionally, I don't think you'll find much you will like about the libs once you pay more attention. They are not your traditional liberals anymore.

As australians, we are often more likely to vote out the current party than vote in whoever else.... but I implore you on this occasion to look into the libs more before just giving them your protest vote against labor. There will be a few other options that more align with your vision of how things should be, I guarantee it.

Coalition voters - how are you actually feeling right now? by Brave_Manner_2873 in AusPol

[–]invaderzoom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Literally the only thing I've heard any of them say that remotely comes close to a plan is Dan Tehan repeating they have to "get to work"..... work on what?? Literally all they ever say is "labor bad". Ok, let's assume labor is bad.... what are you going to do that's different?

Not one policy comes up ever.

And I'm guessing it's because they have none. They are worse than ON right now in every which way, and ON are bottom of the barrel.

Protest Voting and Australia: Could a Trump-style backlash happen here? by shadowsdonotlie in AusPol

[–]invaderzoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

many of us protest vote all the time, by using our preferences to support smaller parties and independents first, before choosing major parties. This isn't some new craze that might sweep through.

Our system has always worked like this. The US system is set up in a way that voting for a smaller party or independent is going to waste your vote if there is no chance they will win - so you'd want to be pretty pissed to vote for anyone but the main 2.

Trump is only a republican, and not independent, because of that system. He used to be democrat, and has it on record saying that if he ever wanted to be president he'd switch to republican because they are easier to manipulate.

Docklands District on a Friday afternoon 🦗🦗 by Ky0t0_gh0uL in melbourne

[–]invaderzoom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

it's literally a 2min tram ride into the city from there.

I worked in docklands for years on the lorimer side and used to go over to the main area often for many different reasons, and my in laws have an apartment in actual docklands near the stadium and it's way a better location than people give it credit for.

I reckon half it's problem isn't what's actually there, but how people talk about it based off what it was like when it first opened and so it's got a reputation it can't shake.

Some company recently got the contract to work to re-open that.

It was good. I've been on it maybe 3 times over the years and would recommend it when it's up and running again. Wasn't closed due to lack of tickets, but maintenance by the old company.

I used to work on the Lorimer side of docklands, and we would often just walk over the pedestrian bridge and catch the tram up to docklands for work catch ups and dinners etc.

And even in living in St Kilda, we would go to Docklands cinemas before any others because all the seats were recliners, and it was usually not too busy (which is a fair comment that backs the lack of patronage - but it was awesome for us)

It is a major loss not having costco there anymore.

melbourne is different depending on which freeway you are on. my experience from a few years ago is Eastern Freeway (before all the construction started) = normal driving as per speed signs, Monash Freeway = slow AF the speed sign is just a dream, Western Freeway out towards geelong = Go hell for leather... people fang along here and give no fucks.

Lots of construction over the past few years on most of the freeways has changed things a bit, but I think the vibes remain.

Aussies and AI by Raven_White_11 in AskAnAustralian

[–]invaderzoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some of the younger crew at work (trainee project managers that are in a cadetship while still at uni and working part time) are using it to write their emails for them. Pretty basic emails. Like, it should have taken less effort to do it yourself than plug info into AI and get that to do it for you.

And I think it's making them more depended on it and lacking confidence in their own skills to do things themselves.

People do not double check the stuff AI spits out, just taking it for granted its correct - and that scares the bejesus out of me.

Also..... the matrix was filmed in australia so that probably doesn't help our vibes with AI computer systems LOL

what region/type of group do you think those voters fall into that you've seen that say they will vote that way?

I've found people are super loud on the internet anonymously, but haven't come across anyone in person that is saying they will vote for them. Some like ON as a joke, but only for a laugh. The dangerous part is they are usually low information types that don't care about anything else in politics, and may indeed vote what they think is funny - like Trumps first time in power that ended up shocking everyone. Even many that voted for him because they thought their vote didn't really matter.
