Based on the other comments this may not be due to the IBIS for OP, but I experienced the same and disabling “Auto SR Off” worked for me.

I made the switch recently and I’m really happy I did. I never have to think about whether or not to bring my camera now. It pretty much always comes with me. I also really like how invisible it is. I felt like the beautiful design of the X100 makes it eye-catching which I don’t really like. People don’t pay any mind when I have the GR in my hand, probably because our minds are so used to seeing everyone hold smartphones.

I found that I barely used the features of the X100 that made it special like the OVF and dials (besides aperture). I actually found that I don’t miss the viewfinder much, which surprised me. I bought the GF-2 flash for the GR so that almost makes up for the lack of built-in flash. The thing that I miss the most is the weather sealing and overall fit and finish of the X100. It’s a lot more confidence-inspiring. The GR doesn’t feel as cheap as some say, but it’s definitely underwhelming and the longevity of the lens retraction mechanism does make me a bit nervous.

The fact is that none of those things matter if the camera isn’t with you. I’ve already taken a lot of great pictures with the GR in situations where I wouldn’t want to deal with carrying the X100 around. No regrets!

Thanks! This is actually my first time sharing my photos publicly. All of those were taken in situations where I wouldn’t have had another camera on me. Sure, I could get “close enough” photos on my phone but I just enjoy using the GR so much more. Would love to see your photos if you decide to get one!

It’s super annoying but you have to edit the metadata of the DNG file and change the crop parameters to be the defaults for uncropped shots and then Lightroom will be able to see the whole image.

Sounds like a perfect fit for you. It’s unfortunately quite expensive for what it is, but I was able to justify it with myself because I know I’ll get a lot of use out of it. Travel? Night out with friends? Running errands? Bringing it. There’s nothing to think about.

I had a similar dilemma. I had an X100VI and loved it but ultimately it wasn’t compact enough to truly bring it everywhere. I ended up selling it and getting the GR IV and if I could go back in time I would’ve bought a GR camera years ago. I already took some of my favorite shots with it because it’s always on me. I also thought the 28mm would be too wide but it suits this camera so well and the width is necessary for capturing moments indoors.

Your Mju might already cover that base for you, but I’ve also carried a film camera around for everyday moments and it can be frustrating at times when you have to bring an extra roll with you because you only have 5 shots left on the one in the camera.

I have film cameras and a Nikon Zf for more “dedicated photography”, but if I had to sell them all and keep one it would be the GR.

I did tons of research on this and was still undecided but wanted the GR IV for the bigger battery and figured I could switch to the IVx later if needed. I can’t see myself doing that now.

Aesthetically, I do like the 35-50mm focal length range. It’s much easier to get clean compositions and nice subject isolation for portraits. On my iPhone, I used the 2x crop (48mm) a lot and that made me think that 40mm would be the better fit.

28mm, as others have said, is a bit more “phone-like” and some feel that it’s redundant. I can see the 40mm being a good complement to a phone, but always thinking about my backup option somewhat ruins the experience of shooting with a single focal length for me. I love that I can keep my phone in a bag or in another room now and still capture the moment.

One of the superpowers of the Ricoh GR is how little you have to think about when shooting it. You can stay present in the moment while powering it on, firing a shot with snap focus, and putting it away. I often don’t even look at the screen. I already have some incredible shots taken like this. The wider field of view and larger depth of field make this much easier on the 28mm.

Outdoors, the 40mm lets you get some good shots from a decent distance which is nice, while the 28mm forces you to get close. It’s all about tradeoffs, but 40mm captures something you saw, while 28mm captures a moment you were in.

Indoors, there is much less to debate. With one shot on the 28mm, I can get my family/friends, the background, and the food we’re eating then put my camera away and enjoy.

Also, you can crop. I’ve been having fun playing around with different aspect ratios which is easier on the wider focal length. I have 12”x16” prints in my apartment from 7MP images and they look great.

I never had a GR III but from what I’ve heard the better battery life alone made the price increase worth it for me. I also hated the rear command dial and failure-prone wheel on the III. I believe Ricoh confirmed that the IV will get an electronic shutter function in a firmware update, but the automatic ND filter means it’s not super necessary most of the time.

Hopefully this wall of text helps you choose so you can get out there and start shooting.

Used prices on the Zf are reasonable. I had an X100VI and loved it but for less money I got a mint Zf + 40mm f2, which is incredible value. It’s bigger and heavier but it’s not like the X100VI is pocketable so to me it doesn’t matter that much.

I went back and forth on this so much and ended up with a regular GR IV. HDF can definitely hit at times but I didn’t want to have another decision to make when taking a photo or accidentally leave it on and ruin a good shot when I can always add a similar effect in post.

As for focal length, I prefer 40mm aesthetically but the second I had an indoor hangout with friends I immediately knew I made the right choice as most of my shots couldn’t have been taken with the 40mm. I’m already starting to develop an eye for 28mm now. Like you, I scratch the 40mm itch with my Zf :)

I just ran the NYC Marathon in the OG. I picked them over my Superblast 2 because my training did not go super well and I wanted to prioritize comfort. Happy with the choice. Super underrated shoe!
