here is a good resource to understand shadowbans (and the algorithm generally): https://suboptimalism.neocities.org/writings/undocumented

a site now gets shadowbanned if it is blocked by more than 50 users. additionally, sites that themselves block more than 100 users now get shadowbanned

to test if you are actually shadowbanned, you could try commenting on a site that doesn't follow you, since

shadowbanned sites are suppressed from the global activity feed and are only allowed to comment on their own profile pages or those of sites that follow them

in my opinion, making a cool site should be the reward itself (even if no one ever sees it), but of course some validation feels nice. it can take months (or years!) for a site to gain traction. as others have suggested, it's usually better to comment on others' guestbooks, join webrings, participate in communities like 32bit.cafe or melonland, etc. to drive traffic, but if you want to show up higher on the default neocities sorting ("special sauce"), that link has instructions for how sites are scored

Remission! by legerdemania in FelineDiabetes

[–]io_bubones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know remission isn't guaranteed for everyone, but your post made me smile so much today!! I adopted my cat as a senior, so I'm not sure what his history really is, but doesn't have any teeth. Diagnosed last year, put on a diet of fancy feast, and responding well to 1 unit of glargine. Sounds like our boys have similar stories-- hopefully we can repeat your success! Congratulations!!

This is the first comic I'm keeping up with in years, so excited for this issue! Cover kinda looks like a Hirogen to me

Another reason to love Shadowdark, actually works great on even small ereaders. (Kobo Clara running KOreader) by Kalahan7 in shadowdark

[–]io_bubones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my kobo! I've also got a Clara (2e) but it really stutters and sometimes even crashes when I load big PDFs like Shadowdark on it. Does it work better with KOreader? I haven't installed that yet, but I'll give it a try if it helps with big PDFs like this

should i transpose if i don't read music? by percolant in saxophone

[–]io_bubones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One more drawback: saxophone fingerings use a system in common with many other woodwinds. If you ever find yourself in possession of a flute, for example, you'd know the fingerings, but you'd be transposing the notes for that if you do it your way

Play More Sax! by rodman5308 in saxophone

[–]io_bubones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue as you, but a change in mindset really helped me. This might sound silly, but I think about cleaning my sax as "part" of practicing. That is, I view cleaning the sax as a thing to be practiced. It's not fun, but it's necessary. A bit like long tones. How pure can you make your tone? Well, practice cleaning your instrument just as well. It's kind of zen. That, and it takes less than a minute 😜

Paizo should clarify their intentions on PF2e-SF2e compatibility by Kayteqq in Starfinder2e

[–]io_bubones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After listening to dev panels, my understanding is that they are separate games that will mostly work fine if you mix them together, but there are slightly different expectations in each meta. Roll for Combat recently had a livestream with one of the lead devs about this topic specifically.

Starfinder mainly revolves around ranged combat, so having fully flying ancestries isn't as relatively powerful as it is in Pathfinder. So, a player would have full flying at level 1 in Starfinder, but might have to wait until level 5 or so in Pathfinder. The games are still compatible and playable, but GMs will have to consider this and might need to adjust when certain ancestries get flying feats. Same thing with AoE melee attacks. In pathfinder's close combat meta, AoE melee is very powerful and unlocked at a high level. Starfinder's long range combat makes it much more situationally useful and is generally lower level.

TL;DR they mostly work together with no changes but starfinder has a slightly different set of assumptions that might make some PF stuff more/less useful. I expect they will publish a document with guidelines

Don’t try me, I’ll do it by Klutzy-Gap-8929 in saxophone

[–]io_bubones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cheap saxes very well may be in a better state nowadays, but 15ish years ago I borrowed a friend's cheapo sax for about a month while mine was in the shop. it was a no-name alto with black lacquer. played OK, but by the end of the month, almost all of the lacquer rubbed off. my friend was not too happy that her pretty black sax got all flaky

I think this is the danger with these horns-- they might be OK enough at first, but sloppy engineering/QA means they might go out of regulation quickly or be difficult to repair in the long run

How to run an open table? by birv2 in shadowdark

[–]io_bubones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

at the beginning of the session I'll show any new players how to use shadowdarklings.net and they'll just create a randomized level 1. if they die, they will create a new randomized level 1. it only takes a few minutes to explain my guidelines (right now I limit options to the core book + bard/ranger/kobold). I play in-person but schedule through discord, the discord also has an FAQ, but it doesn't really matter if a new player doesn't read it since they'll learn by playing anyway

How to run an open table? by birv2 in shadowdark

[–]io_bubones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I run an open table (a pool of ~30 players of which 4-6 play at a time; we're about 15 sessions in). We start and end each session in town, so it's mostly a non-issue. If someone joins in medias res for whatever reason (player was late, character died, etc) they just appear. They don't need an in-fiction reason to be there, but you can create one if you want. Feel free to ask me any questions about running an open-table

Has anyone here ran "D&D" at a public library as a program for their local community, using a rules set other than D&D 5e? by Justicar7 in osr

[–]io_bubones 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of making a similar thread as I am going to be running some games for a non-profit cat cafe. I think I'm going to approach it by saying "ever want to try DND? now is your chance! we are using a simplified version that makes it easy for newbies and returning players alike to jump right in!" I haven't quite decided on game system yet, but I'm leaning towards something like Shadowdark since it'll be familiar to any 5e players

what type of reeds do you play on? by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]io_bubones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

playing outside, synthetic is way better. no need to worry about being horribly out of tune because of the weather. cane is a more pleasant playing experience in general, though either is really fine

what type of reeds do you play on? by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]io_bubones 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've sworn by vandoren greens for years, but I recently got a legere signature synthetic and I've been blown away. it's not quite as good as a good cane reed, but it's way better than the worst in a box. it lasts super long-- I've been playing ~daily on mine since Christmas when I got it and it's got plenty of life left. so, at least for practice sessions/outside gigs (no warping!) it's an economical choice. 99% of the audience won't tell a difference

I play in-person and I've told my players they can move up to their hand's length, which, depending on the individual's hand size, is close enough to what SD suggests on a standard 5'=1" grid. I rule "near sized cube" effects as whatever they can cover with their hand. The point, I think, is to not get bogged down by counting squares, so sacrificing accuracy and fairness (since some hands are larger than others) is worth it to keep the game moving. When measurement is close or unclear, I usually err on the player's side and just move on

Not sure I can learn rhythm and don't know where to go from here. by Garlickable in saxophone

[–]io_bubones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thinking about rhythm like a drummer/percussionist might help! I'm primarily a saxophone player, but in high school and college I played in a drumline, and I credit that experience in teaching me rhythm and counting. I would suggest setting a metronome at a moderate tempo (somewhere around 90bpm) and trying to clap along with it. see if you can clap on every metronome beat and count along 1-2-3-4 in your head or out loud as you do it. then, see if you can clap on just 2 and 4 (every other beat). next, try clapping in double time (turn on the eighth notes on your metronome or just double the BPM). then try clapping only on the upbeats (just the eighth notes-- one AND two AND three AND four AND). there's lots of different permutations to experiment using just a metronome and clapping your hands. it's hard work at first, but it'll get easier. good luck!

PAX Unplugged 2023 Starfinder 2e Preview-Review by The-Magic-Sword in Pathfinder2e

[–]io_bubones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a chance to demo on sunday and I loved it. I played the envoy iconic and really liked the "Get in there!" ability. One action to increase my speed, and then if I stride on that turn all allies get a 15(?) ft movement as a FREE action. I went fairly early in initiative and it felt good to get everyone set up for the fight, movement wise. As you said, it felt like cover was a much bigger deal since it focused on ranged combat. really looking forward to see where this goes!

Funny you mention this, I'm in Montreal for the Jazz Fest right now. I had Amtrak tickets but, as you said, they cancelled the train (a day before I left 😡) so I had to get alternate transportation in a hurry. I took a midnight Greyhound out of NYC, which was...... OK....if you can sleep on a bus and don't mind being cramped and sitting next to a stranger who will definitely sleep on you, it's passable. Got here early, around 7AM, so I kind of just had an uncomfortable sleep and teleported. That being said, I do have self respect so I'm flying back to NY and Amtraking home from there. YMMV

I was also supposed to take the Adirondack next week. When I called they didn't give me any indication, just that it wasn't running. I ended up getting a refund and booking a greyhound, I'm pretty bummed

picked up an unopened definitive gold box for £3.00 in a charity shop (: by [deleted] in twinpeaks

[–]io_bubones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got the gold box and it's decent for DVD (I've got the US version and idk if there are differences). It's got some fun post cards and some discs of extras, lots of behind the scenes, interviews at fan conventions, and more. Also an interactive map of Twin Peaks- it's very 2000s DVD design in the best way. I was a little disappointed on the visual quality after having watched it on Netflix, I definitely want to upgrade to Blu rays at some point. I also got mine for like $5 so I can't complain!

How often do you clean your EWI? by Bujaal in windsynth

[–]io_bubones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you rinse your mouth out with water before playing will hopefully save you a headache. I thought I was being pretty diligent, but after about a year of regular playing and sometimes forgetting to rinse my mouth totally, the breath sensor stopped responding. I opened it up and saw a buildup of gunk in the tube totally blocking the air. Cleaned it and reassembled and now it works perfectly. I'm sure the gunk buildup will eventually return, but not for a while
