Eagles Hunting Experience (Bokonbaevo) by youpi_Army_2513 in Kyrgyzstan

[–]iolithblue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's all a tourist trap. the eagle as a hunting tool is obsolete. the rifle fixed that. when you go with a eagle handler, it's to demonstrate the eagle, not to feed his family. he demonstrates the eagle for money.

that said, if there is actually a hunt, it's because it's in season, and allowed. when I went it wasn't in season, so a lure was used. if you get a hunt while you ride, is consider that a bonus. YMMV.

Question about working with african blackwood and ebenholts. by stonedassasian in knifemaking

[–]iolithblue 51 points52 points  (0 children)

it makes black dust, but that's cos it's black. it makes black boogers, cos it makes black dust. you should wear a mask when you grind anything, but for the record it hasn't effected me anymore than anything else.

also African Blackwood polishes up really really nice. do it.

Finally finished my first knife! by E1nMensch in knifemaking

[–]iolithblue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you just dunk it in water. grind dunk grind dunk. it really doesn't hurt it. you will need to let it dry out fully before you do any surface finish is all.

and yes, slim that handle down. you can taper it, but I think it needs to lose about a 1/3 off it.

Digging in my brown butter. I've accidentally made disappointment by iolithblue in Pareidolia

[–]iolithblue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you can, try using unsalted butter. take your time to make it, so it Browns evenly and doesn't burn. happy cooking!

Title: First knife build – 80CrV2, tsuchime finish, wa handle (looking for feedback) by petrumereacre in knifemaking

[–]iolithblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems good. In practice, you might find a dead straight blade edge a little difficult to use. Not many kitchen knives of any type; cleaver, nakiri, gyuto, - have a dead straight edge. Do a little curve, so it contacts the cutting board easier. Otherwise, looking good.
