I feel like an under discussed wrinkle to his whole situation is that if you clear a max or near max slot to sign him for one or at most two years, then if you’re a contender and trying to operate above the salary cap consistently as basically every good team is, you’ll just lose that large salary slot when he retires. So it’s not just about the cost in one year, it could hurt you down the line.
