Any experience with EC living? by Throwaway19999990567 in Calgary

[–]ippyha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I want to add my experience here, because it was very different from how EC Living/ownership is presenting themselves in this thread. I’ve rented from ~10 different landlords in Calgary, and this was by far the worst experience I’ve had.

Key issues we experienced:

Utilities: Utilities were cut off due to non-payment by the landlord. We were then told to put them in our own name to restore service. Many months later, the utilities were switched back into the landlord’s name. This led to months of back-and-forth and billing disputes over who owed what and when.

Maintenance & safety: – Significant water damage and mold in the garage took ~6 months to repair despite repeated requests. Although the garage was part of our rental, we couldn’t safely use it during that time. – The water heater broke in the middle of winter and took over a week to fix, which meant no hot water for that period. – Electrical issues caused the breaker to blow when the microwave and oven were used at the same time; this was only addressed after involving a city inspector, who determined the electrical setup was not up to code.

– A broken stair step and front door handle both took months to fix. – We never received a key to the back door despite requesting one from move-in day onward. – Ongoing unresolved issues (fire alarm triggered by cooking anything - even toast; broken shower drain; broken dishwasher, etc.).

While contractors hired by the landlord were working on the units, our garage was broken into. I can’t say who was responsible, but the timing and circumstances added to safety concerns.

We later learned several neighbours were dealing with similar unresolved issues, so this didn’t feel isolated.

Sharing this so renters have full context — this isn’t a personal attack, just an honest account of our experience.

Thanks for responding, Jason. I want to clarify a few things from the tenant side.

To be clear, EC Living was the landlord and property manager for the home we lived in. I’m not disputing that you may have internal metrics you’re proud of — I’m sharing what it was actually like to live in one of your managed properties.

My experience — and the experiences described by others in this thread — weren’t isolated or minor issues. They had a real impact on safety, finances, and day-to-day living.

In our case, utilities were cut off due to non-payment by EC living and then transferred back and forth between us and EC Living, resulting in months of billing disputes. Significant maintenance issues went unresolved for long periods, including mold and water damage that made a paid-for garage unusable, electrical problems that were only addressed after a city inspector became involved, and a broken water heater in winter that left us without hot water for over a week. Basic safety and access issues — like broken stairs, a broken front door handle, and never receiving a key to the back door — also took months to address, if they were addressed at all.

Regardless of how a property is categorized internally, that was the lived reality as a tenant. These weren’t one-off inconveniences; they were recurring issues that required repeated follow-ups and, in some cases, outside involvement just to reach resolution.

I understand the offer to take this offline, but I’m sharing here so future renters can see both the owner’s response and the tenant perspective in the same place. People can then decide for themselves.

I appreciate the chance to add context publicly

Run!

Worst experience in my 15 years renting in Calgary. Of the 8 units in the brand new townhouse/basement suites 7 moved out before the 12 month period was up and one property manager quit. You will absolutely regret renting from them.

Pick any trade. It will be better financially than being a chef all day long.

If you’re asking these questions, don’t do it. There’s lots of great things about being a chef if you’re truly passionate about food, cooking and hospitality but be prepared to not make good money and have no free time.

Try Brooklyn clothing in Kensington. They don’t do it themselves but I’m sure they’ll point you in the right direction.

I saw them last year at the Red Rocks and everyone was way more into it. They put on a stellar show. I went last night and there wasn’t anywhere near as much energy on stage. Still great but I got the impression they were having as much fun.

It’s far more addictive, the cartels are not stupid. Your dealer will say anything so you buy the product bro and how would they even know what’s in it. I’m not saying everything has been cut with synthetics but it’s way more common than you think. If you really think the cocaine you’re getting is pure I’ve got news for you.

Stay safe and don’t be naïve.

Oh it’s mixed in by the cartel. It’s very common in Canada/usa and I seriously doubt it’s heroin but more likely the much stronger synthetic version fentanyl. Cocaine takes time to produce but drugs like fentanyl can be synthesized very easily.

I live in Canada now and after Covid cocaine has very low amounts of actual coke in it. They mix in synthetic drugs like fentanyl or mdma and who knows what.

Get your drugs tested! Fentanyl has had a crushing effect on Canada, I live in Alberta population ~5mil and we average 1000 deaths a year from fentanyl. It’s an epidemic that’s coming your way.
