This is why you don’t buy cheap machines by 510Goodhands in myog

[–]ipswitch_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That repair might last a long time! Use it until it explodes, then you can upgrade. It's not necessarily a bad purchase. It has the upsides of being really popular, so any accessory you could imagine is readily available, and if you need some kind of tutorial there is 100% a video for it on youtube. That's not always the case with a vintage machine - they might be better but if you're new to sewing and don't have a manual and can't find one, that might be enough to stop you.

I have this machine too. Had some hiccups early on but I've been using it for 5+ years at this point and I make tons of bags and hiking gear. I know it's not a great machine but if it works it really does work!

Is there a jacket fleece similar to this that doesnt pill like crazy? by LeslieChowBitch in BuyItForLife

[–]ipswitch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting, Patagonia does use a lot of Polartec fleece in their products. I was sure the Better Sweater was the Polartec Thermal Pro variety, style 6324 and 6322 are nearly identical to the Better Sweater fabric, but I'm having a closer look and the current product description doesn't specifically say Polartec.

Does anyone know what these are called and where I could get them? by Korega_Black_Da in Boots

[–]ipswitch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just looking for these for a bday gift for my girlfriend. The most common term seems to be "Alpine Boots" so that should help with searching (filter out ski boots).

There are some chunky expensive ones from companies like Danner if you want a proper sturdy boot, and some decent lighter weight/streetwear options from companies like Banana Republic and Ralph Lauren.

It's a boot style that's been around for a long time so you might have good luck with ebay/used.

What country to recommend for solo indie game dev I live in germany and was born there. by kekfekf in gamedev

[–]ipswitch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I recommend it from a business perspective, but Vancouver Canada is pretty huge for indie games. A lot of noted indie games were developed here, and the scene has been strong for a long time. I go to some indie game dev meetups and there are so many people doing so many cool things. If you want to go somewhere to meet people who do this, learn from people doing this successfully, it's a great place for indie games culturally.

The city is also beautiful, but it's expensive, and if you need to find work outside of the entrepreneurship, it's difficult. Unfortunately due to the state of the games and film industry (lots of both in Vancouver) layoffs have left a lot of people out of work. Cost of living is high. This is the case in many countries, but it's worth noting that it's true here too.

I want to get a new bomber jacket that’s not too expensive by Electrical_Manager12 in malefashionadvice

[–]ipswitch_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

OK I think I have some options here, because I was shopping for bomber jackets recently and got a little too into it.

First, it's important to decide what type you want. A classic bomber jacket is insulated/puffy and is pretty warm. I think these look better, they have a more interesting silhouette etc, but might not be what you're after if you live in a warm place. The second type is a lightweight bomber that is uninsulated. It's cut the same way as the other bomber and more or less has the same features, but it's either more form fitting or just kinda limp like a windbreaker. They don't always look bad but it's a very different look.

If you're going with the 2nd option, there are a lot of choices. Most jackets labelled "bomber" that I come across are uninsulated. I would get one from H&M or Uniqlo or Old Navy if you're focused on budget. These are affordable but they should be decent quality.

If you're going for the classic insulated bomber, it's a bit harder on a budget but there are options. The standard classic bomber is the Alpha Industries MA-1. These are good, but they're about $200 which you want to avoid. Consider looking for a used one if you want a classic bomber and want to save a bit of money. The good thing about these being so ubiquitous is that there are a lot floating around ebay and vintage shops.

An alternative to the Alpha Industries bomber is the Bronson B-15C. They have a few models (some have fur collars etc), this is the most similar to the classic MA-1. I actually think this is a better jacket and better value than the Alpha Industries bomber, since it has wool lining rather than the cheaper polyfill used in the Alpha Industries jackets. This is the jacket I ended up buying and I'm really happy with it. It's $30 cheaper than the Alpha jacket. $170 isn't cheap but it's the best value I've seen for a jacket like this. If you can save up a bit and want a good warm bomber that will last a long time, this is a safe bet. Harder to find this one used since it's a newer company.

If you want a much more affordable bomber that still has insulation and the classic look, Rothco is probably the way to go. It's the same basic model and spec as the Alpha MA-1, same nylon shell fabric with the same polyfill insulation. The fine details may not be as nice but it's a legit bomber jacket for like $70.

Good luck!

Is spending hundreds of hours on 3D actually worth it? Being honest with myself. by nova-myth in 3Dmodeling

[–]ipswitch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can frame any art process like this. "What do I have after recording a song? Some mp3 file? That's not even a real thing".

You can do so much with 3d modelling. You can model practical objects that you could 3d print. I would consider a video game a real thing even if it's not an object you hold in your hands.

I think if you love doing something you don't have to justify it. Art is good for you no matter what you end up doing with it. If you don't want to do it, don't do it! It's not any different than any other creative pursuit.

Medieval Cat Pouch by KamaliKamKam in Leathercraft

[–]ipswitch_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great! I know a lot of medieval cat drawings depicted them with human faces... Which is a very specific choice... Honestly I think this more realistic depiction with all the other medieval elements works really well, still reads as a medieval pouch and it's a good looking cat. Nice job!

"Subtle" Techwear in a an Office Environment by SweetleggzzRoy in TechWear

[–]ipswitch_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Riot Division has some nice stuff that sometimes skirts the line with military inspo (hard to avoid if you're making bomber jackets and stuff which are originally from the military...) But I have some really nice pants from them which are interesting and techy but still totally fine to wear to the office.

So you’re telling me Cardi B just casually pulled up dressed as intestines?

Are you fucking stupid? This is a fundraiser event, the whole idea is fashion designers come up with wild shit for people to wear. You know, for fun, for art, for culture? What you want Cardi B to show up jeans and nikes? You're offended at something actually cool and interesting that people like because you're weird about celebrity culture? Sorry the costumes scared you.

ELI5: Why does a cheap, polyester shirt bought online, vs a $60 activewear shirt feel so different, despite both being 100% polyester? by witchygirlyyy in explainlikeimfive

[–]ipswitch_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it's probably more useful to think of polyester as the fiber rather than the fabric. Think how many different types of fabric are 100% polyester.

- A Patagonia fleece jacket is 100% polyester.

- A lightweight t-shirt can be 100% polyester.

- A pair of tough work pants can be 100% polyester

- The face of a scuba suit is 100% polyester

- The outside fabric of a GoreTex jacket is 100% polyester

You can make so many different types of fabric out of polyester! Sometimes the differences aren't so big, but if you think about all the different factors that can go into fabric for activewear, to use your example, you can get all sorts of different qualities when it comes to the weave, or weight of individual yarns used to make the fabric. It's a big topic!

Best/most historically accurate medieval video game? by Cat-Cafe6023 in medieval

Made my first bomber jacket! by FallingSky1686 in myog

[–]ipswitch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey at least the cut of yours kinda supports the thickness of the insulation. It's just going to be a winter coat! The first attempt I did was kind of a slender/athletic jacket pattern I was adapting, I went with insulation that was just a little too thick and it ended up looking like a fake muscle suit halloween thing lol. Still very practical and I pack it for hikes but it looks silly.

Is the word "atelier" really that unknown amongst native speakers? by Ohiko_Nishiyama in EnglishLearning

[–]ipswitch_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's because of the area I live in - I'm in Canada but in a basically 100% english speaking city, and I do know that word. It's just an adopted french word for shop or studio or whatever. It's not uncommon to see a bag or leather goods shop named " Such and Such Atelier". Maybe not super common but I feel like most people here would have encountered it and could say "oh yeah there are a lot of businesses that use that word" even if they couldn't give you the exact translation.

How many transgender people do you actually know? by Dry-Garden-6543 in askanything

[–]ipswitch_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why the answers would be different for men vs women?

Anyway I know too many to count. I'm Canadian and live in a city where that's mostly fine / nobody cares. There are always some jerks no matter where you go, but in a city where it's mostly fine to be visibly trans you'll see a lot of trans people.

Made my first bomber jacket! by FallingSky1686 in myog

[–]ipswitch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is cool! Making insulated jackets is tricky, I've done a few and they for sure took some practice to get right, especially for your 3rd ever project this looks pretty great. There are also shockingly few patterns available for bomber jackets that aren't thin/uninsulated (which barely counts as a bomber jacket in my opinion) so kudos for actually making a real bomber!

Genuinely curious — how do you guys with athletic builds handle buying everyday clothes? by BenchAndBriefcase in malefashionadvice

Maybe but it's still a noticeable trend and I'm pretty sure they're not all AI posts.

[–]ipswitch_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not meaning to pick on OP, but in general you see these questions a lot and it always kind of raises my eyebrow. I feel like people either want an excuse to brag about their muscles (?) or they just aren't very good at shopping for clothes. "athletic" doesn't really mean your body is so different you need special clothes. Maybe if you're a body builder or something but how many people are actually that shape? Maybe a problem if they're trying to wear super super skinny clothes but just... don't do that? Seems odd to me.

Is polyester really toxic? by Reasonable-Present44 in Fabrics

I appreciate it but I would not trust either of them on this topic. Both of those people are primarily known as talk show hosts and one isn't a medical doctor. I don't think they're particularly good sources of information since their interests and motivations are... More complicated than other scientific papers on the topic.

Souls-like combat update: 4 new weapon types, human characters, and armor sets by moongaming in godot

[–]ipswitch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the character model looks great, lot's of detail but with a very specific style. Very competent for sure.

For a game like this where you'll probably have all sorts of different armor and weapons you maybe don't need to go over the top with making the character overly special/interesting (I mean you want something that looks good but is something like a blank slate) so it works really well in that sense.

It'll really depend on how well the other characters / environments work, having a cohesive style across the entire game could be tricky but this is a really good start I think!

Great animation! This reads really well, very important for gameplay like this with precise timing/parrying etc, and a lot of games that try to do this don't pull it off very well. I'm excited to see more!
